SUMMARY:Film Screening:Tales of the Maya Skies
DESCRIPTION:Tales of the Maya Skies immerses viewers in the wonders of Maya science\, cosmology and myth. This beautifully illustrated story takes us back in time to the jungles of Mexico to discover how Maya scholars developed a sophisticated understanding of astronomy\, architecture\, and mathematics that enabled them to predict solstices\, solar eclipses\, weather patterns and planetary movements.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AIM Seminar: From woven baskets to filamentous mycelium: harnessing entanglement for structural resilience
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Entanglement of slender elements by interlacing or growing in place offers unique routes to manufacturing composite structural systems with properties that exceed the constituent materials. In this talk\, we explore this theme across two systems: woven baskets and mycelium-bound composites.\n\nFirst\, we show how weaving thin ribbons into three-dimensional basket shapes creates structures and metamaterials with high stiffness and a remarkable resilience to damage. Experiments and simulations show that woven corners can be as stiff as continuous counterparts made with the same amount of material\, yet under large deformations they remain elastic and can fully recover their initial shape\, because the interlaced ribbons permit segmented local buckling that deconcentrates stresses. We then show that introducing traditionally unwanted 'snags' into woven systems can engineer the spatial curvature of the thin-sheet system\, and that modular assemblies of woven corners can be used to fabricate functional robots that locomote while carrying loads much larger than their self-weight.\n\nSecond\, we turn to mycelium-bound composites\, a low-cost\, renewable\, and biodegradable material made by growing filamentous fungi on lignocellulosic waste. Here\, the entanglement is grown rather than woven\, and we use pull-out experimental tests to explore the bonding behavior of mycelium. Our results show that mycelium bonds well with all tested materials\, including woods\, ceramics\, metals\, polymers\, and textiles. Surprisingly\, the bonding with Copper\, Zinc\, Nickel\, Iron\, and their alloys is particularly strong\, as ions from these metals encourage enhanced growth of the mycelium network.\n\nContact: Ian Tobasco

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Algebraic cobordism rings of wonderful varieties and matroids
DESCRIPTION:An exceptional\, integral isomorphism was found between the K-ring and Chow ring of the wonderful variety of a hyperplane arrangement in works of Berget--Eur--Spink--Tseng and Larson--Li--Payne--Proudfoot. I will discuss my work with Ethan Partida\, where we examine this exceptional isomorphism from the point of view of formal group laws\, and extend it to an exceptional isomorphism between the algebraic cobordism ring and (extended) Chow ring of the wonderful variety.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Half-Life: The Science of Letting Go and Becoming New
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: What happens when the life you worked so hard to build begins transforming into something entirely new? Dr. Angelique Johnson traces her unexpected journey from earning a PhD in electrical engineering and building neurotechnology through MEMStim\, to engineering visions through Vissionaireum\, to founding Spiritual Capital Inc.\, where she explores faith as a form of capital for building ventures with eternal impact. Drawing on the scientific concept of half-life\, Johnson offers a new way to think about transformation: sometimes becoming who you were meant to be requires letting go of who you worked so hard to become. Her story challenges us to consider whether the second half of life can become greater than the first—if we are willing to release what was and embrace what’s new.\n\nBio: Dr. Angelique Johnson is a scientist\, entrepreneur\, licensed minister\, and speaker dedicated to uniting innovation\, faith\, and impact. She is the Founder of MEMStim \, a neurotechnology company\; Vissionaireum\, a venture studio for purpose-driven entrepreneurs\; and Spiritual Capital Inc.\, a nonprofit that equips leaders\, ministries\, and businesses to harness faith as capital for building ventures and creating lasting community impact. As Director of Training at the International Business Innovation Association (InBIA)\, Dr. Johnson leads the Creative Capital Access Collaborative (CCAC)\, an initiative advancing innovative approaches to capital access for entrepreneurs and the organizations that support them. She has spoken on platforms from Capitol Hill to the United Nations and serves on boards advancing entrepreneurship and equity. Featured by NBC\, NPR\, and PBS\, she champions passion\, resilience\, and faith as tools for celebrating progress\, overcoming setbacks\, and building institutions that create generational impact.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | Cosmological Seed Magnetic Field from Inflation
DESCRIPTION:A cosmological magnetic field of nG strength on Mpc length scales could be the seed magnetic field needed to explain observed few microG large-scale galactic magnetic fields. I first briefly review the observational and theoretical motivations for such a seed field\, two galactic magnetic field amplification models\, and some non-inflationary seed field generation scenarios. I then discuss an inflation magnetic field generation model. I conclude by mentioning possible extensions of this model as well as potentially observable consequences.
