In this interactive workshop\, students will explore what it means to develop a sense of belonging within research and academic spaces. Participants will consider how identity can influence relationships with mentors\, research teams\, and institutions\, while reflecting on the strengths they bring to their work. Through guided discussion\, personal reflection\, and practical scenarios\, students will identify strategies for building supportive relationships\, communicating across differences\, responding to challenges\, and navigating research environments with confidence. The session will also highlight resources and networks that can help students feel supported and empowered throughout their research experience.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Penny Stamps Speaker Series - Vijay Gupta
DESCRIPTION:\n\nVijay Gupta is a violinist\, curator\, and music director who explores the human condition through music. His performing career has taken him from Carnegie Hall — where he debuted at age eight — to county jails\, Skid Row shelters\, and state psychiatric hospitals\, finding in each the same essential questions about what music is for\, and who it is for. At eleven\, he made his international solo debut with the Israel Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta. At nineteen\, he became the youngest violinist ever to join the Los Angeles Philharmonic\, where he performed for eleven seasons. The Los Angeles Times has called his playing \"brilliant\, bold and gripping\,\" and Publishers Weekly praised his memoir Restrung as a \"a virtuoso performance” that illustrates how music \"reaches the broken places within us and the broken places between us.\"\n\nA recipient of the MacArthur Fellowship and honoree on the Time 100 Next list\, Gupta is the founder and artistic director of Street Symphony\, a nonprofit that brings live music into shelters\, clinics\, county jails\, state hospitals\, and reentry programs across Los Angeles. Over fifteen years\, Street Symphony has delivered more than 3\,000 performances and workshops. The New Yorker called it \"a formidable new model for how musical institutions should engage with the world around them.\" \n\nIn addition to his work with Street Symphony\, Gupta performs as a soloist and as a founding member of the Darshan Piano Trio. He holds degrees in biology and violin performance and completed graduate study at the Yale School of Music. He has addressed audiences at the Aspen Institute\, Mayo Clinic\, Harvard Business School\, the American Medical Association\, and the U.S. Psychiatric Congress\, among others. Restrung\, his memoir\, was published by Grand Central / Da Capo in 2026. \n\nJoining Gupta for this program is pianist Dominic Cheli\, an acclaimed performer whose career has taken him to Carnegie Hall\, Walt Disney Concert Hall\, and major festivals and orchestras across the United States and abroad. A 2017 first-prize winner of the Concert Artists Guild Competition\, Cheli has released acclaimed recordings of works by Clementi\, Liszt\, Schubert\, and Erwin Schulhoff. He is also a member of the Darshan Trio with Gupta and Yoshi Masuda\, whose programs bring together chamber music and new music in unexpected and interdisciplinary ways. \n\nPresented in partnership with the U-M Arts Initiative\, the Michigan Arts Festival\, and the Ann Arbor Symphony.\n\nSeries presenting partners: Detroit PBS\, ALL ARTS\, and PBS Books. SUMMARY:Well-being:Undergraduate Spiritual Wellness Group
DESCRIPTION:What grounds you? What gives your life meaning? And how do you make space to actually think about those questions in the middle of college life?\n\nSpiritual Wellness Group is an 8-week small-group experience designed to help students slow down\, reflect\, and develop skills for tending to their inner lives.\n\nThrough conversation\, reflection\, creative activities\, and shared practices\, participants will strengthen skills in self-awareness\, values clarification\, deep listening\, meaningful conversation\, navigating differences\, and identifying practices that support their well-being. Together\, we’ll explore how our identities\, relationships\, experiences\, beliefs\, questions\, and values shape the way we understand ourselves and the world around us.\n\nYou do not need to identify as religious or spiritual to participate. This is a space for curiosity rather than certainty—where students can ask big questions\, learn from one another\, and become more intentional about what helps them feel grounded and connected.\n\nBy the end of the eight weeks\, we hope participants leave with:\n\nA clearer understanding of the values and experiences that shape them\nPractical tools for reflection and spiritual well-being\nGreater confidence having meaningful conversations across different beliefs and perspectives\nStronger listening and relationship-building skills\nNew practices for finding grounding\, meaning\, and connection in everyday life\nA community of students willing to engage thoughtfully with some of life's bigger questions\n\nSeparate groups are available for undergraduate and graduate students. Light refreshments are provided during sessions\, and participants will conclude the eight weeks with a celebration dinner together.\n\nCome as you are. You don't need to have your spirituality figured out—you just need to be willing to explore.
