SUMMARY:Performance:Wheelchair Sports Camp & Gaelynn Lea (the kalyn & Gaelynn tiny mountain tour)
DESCRIPTION:Free concert & discussion by artists Wheelchair Sports Camp & Gaelynn Lea at The Ark. Part of the 2026 Michigan Arts Festival\, presented by the U-M Arts Initiative\, with partners The Ark\, Booksweet\, and the Disability Network Washtenaw Monroe Livingston.\n\n—Wheelchair Sports Camp—\nWheelchair Sports Camp is certainly not your average act. Hailing from Denver\, CO\, fronted by Kalyn Rose Heffernan - a wheelchair-using\, profanely queer and tiny rapper\, with a very distinctly high-pitched sense of humor. Backed by her gimp Greggy on drums\, the band combines fantastic beats with an absolutely face-shredding live show. After playing shows everywhere they could\, the band expanded into performance art\, museum takeovers\, politics\, prison tours\, permanent installations\, theatre\, film\, and now the release of their newest album\, “oh imperfecta” on Alternative Tentacles Records.\n\n—Gaelyn Lea—\nGaelynn Lea has carved out a singular place in contemporary music since winning NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Contest in 2016. With her haunting songs and cinematic arrangements of live-looped fiddle tunes\, she has captivated audiences around the world and gone on to compose the original score for Macbeth on Broadway. Her work moves fluidly across genres—she has collaborated with Michael Stipe\, The Decemberists\, Wilco\, LOW\, and Pigface. In 2026\, Algonquin Books published Gaelynn Lea's debut memoir\, *IT WASN’T MEANT TO BE PERFECT*. Her book is a warm\, witty look at music\, disability advocacy\, and the complicated but beautiful life of a touring artist. Gaelynn is one of the leading public voices on Disability Culture and accessibility in the arts.\n\n+Doors open at noon+ \n+Livestream available+\n+Masks welcome/encouraged+\n\n📖 Book Signing—\nAfter the concert\, Booksweet will offer sales of Gaelynn Lea's 2026 memoir\, *IT WASN’T MEANT TO BE PERFECT*. The artists will be present for a signing.\n\n🎉 Staff Explorer Pass Perk—\nThe first 20 U-M staff members to check in at The Ark on performance day (Staff ID required) will receive a free copy of Gaelynn's memoir!\n\n📣 Panel Discussion on Oct. 17—\nDisability Network Washtenaw Monroe Livingston is hosting a panel discussion on Art & Disability\, featuring Kalyn Rose Heffernan of Wheelchair Sports Camp and Gaelynn Lea\, alongside local artists. \n\n—Accessibility—\nThe Ark is fully accessible to those with disabilities and works to accommodate anyone with special seating needs. The listening room is located on the second floor and is wheelchair accessible by elevator\, which is located just behind the box office\, straight back from the main entrance. If you have any concerns about your specific needs\, please indicate them via the RSVP form and/or contact The Ark at (734) 761-1800.\n\n—Sponsors—\nThis program is sponsored in part by Neil and Annmarie Hawkins and U-M Student Accessibility and Accommodation Services.

SUMMARY:Performance:Come from Away
DESCRIPTION:*Come from Away* is based on the true story of the time when the isolated community of Gander\, Newfoundland\, played host to the world. What started as an average day in a small town turned into an international sleepover\, when 38 planes\, carrying thousands of people from around the globe\, were diverted to Gander’s airstrip on September 11\, 2001. Undaunted by culture clashes and language barriers\, the people of Gander cheered the stranded travelers with music\, an open bar\, and the recognition that we’re all part of a global family.\n\n*Come from Away* has earned global success with 37 award nominations and 13 wins\, most notably Best New Musical at the 2019 Olivier Awards and Outstanding Musical at the 2017 Drama Desk Awards. The show’s global presence resonates with audiences as an uplifting reminder of humanity’s ability to come together.\n\nBook\, Music\, and Lyrics by Irene Sankoff and David Hein\nDirected by Vincent J. Cardinal\nMusic Direction by Cynthia Kortman Westphal\n\n–––\n*Parking / Traffic alert for attendees:*\nhttps://smtd.umich.edu/2026-construction\n

SUMMARY:Performance:Staff Explorer Pass | *Dead Man’s Cellphone*: A Production of UM-Flint Fine & Performing Arts

Sarah Ruhl's inventive comedy explores identity\, morality\, grief\, and our universal longing to connect\, weaving together absurd humor with surprising emotional depth.
