SUMMARY:Exhibition:Cosmo Whyte: Under the Quiet\, Beyond the Eye
DESCRIPTION:\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\n\nStamps Gallery kicks off the fall 2026 semester with an ambitious mid-career survey of interdisciplinary artist Cosmo Whyte. Born and raised in Jamaica\, Whyte completed a BFA from Bennington College and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan. He is currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architecture\, UCLA.\n\nThis exhibition brings together two central concerns that animate Whyte’s artistic practice: the archive\, both personal and public\, as a site of disturbance\; and migration as a lived experience of refuge\, refusal\, and reinvention. In Whyte’s work\, the archive is never static or neutral. Rather\, it is a contested space where official histories encounter memory\, inheritance\, and the fragments of stories carried across generations. His practice moves within this charged interstitial terrain\, between what has been recorded and what has been remembered\, between institutional knowledge and embodied experience. Whyte invites the viewer to consider the fluidity of geographic borders and layered cultural identities that have persisted despite societal unrest caused by racial and socio-economic hierarchies across generations. In an era of intensified border politics and renewed debates over national identity\, Whyte’s work offers a timely meditation on memory\, movement\, and belonging.\n\nPresented with support from the U-M Institute for Humanities\, the U-M LSA Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\, and the U-M Library.

Enjoy a complimentary pizza lunch while learning about innovative research and cutting-edge tools.\n\n“Human-AI Systems for Externalizing Surgical Expertise”\n\nAssociated Link:  https://wjymonica.github.io/\n\nAbstract\nSurgical expertise is largely tacit: what separates experts from novices often lies in perceptual and decision-making skills\, including where to look\, when it is safe to proceed\, and how to perform each action. This is where human-AI systems can help. By capturing multimodal signals such as gaze\, surgical video\, narration\, and instrument motion\, they can help replay and visualize expert performance\, convert surgical recordings into learning resources\, and summarize experts’ mental models. In this talk\, I will present three examples: SurgGaze\, which captures surgeons’ attention intraoperatively\; Surgment\, which creates perceptual and cognitive exercises from surgical recordings\; and eXplainMR\, an ultrasound practice platform that provides explanations for action guidance. Together\, these examples show how human-AI systems can make surgical expertise more transferable\, accessible\, and scalable for medical students.

DESCRIPTION:Interdisciplinary Islamic Studies Seminar Series\n\nImperial Waqfs: Global Islamic Law in the 19th Century\nNurfadzilah Yahaya\, Assistant Professor of History\, Yale University\n\nThursday\, October 8\n12 to 1:30 p.m.\nWeiser Hall\, 10th floor\n\nNurfadzilah Yahaya is an Assistant Professor of History at Yale University. She received her BA (2003) and MA (2006) from the National University of Singapore\, and her PhD (2012) in History from Princeton University. Before coming to Yale\, she taught at the National University of Singapore. Dr. Yahaya specializes in history of Southeast Asia\, Indian Ocean history\, legal history\, history of infrastructure\, and environmental history. Her first book\, *Fluid Jurisdictions: Colonial Law and Arabs in Southeast Asia *(Cornell University Press\, 2020) demonstrates how colonial subjects entrenched European colonial legalities in British and Dutch territories in Southeast Asia by playing several jurisdictions against one another from the mid-nineteenth century onwards\n\nPlease email IISScoordinators@umich.edu with questions.
