DESCRIPTION:Economics graduate student Austin Zhu performs on the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Carillon\, an instrument of 60 bells with the lowest bell (bourdon) weighing 6 tons.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Lurie Carillon every weekday that classes are in session. During these recitals\, visitors may take the elevator to level 2 to view the largest bells\, or to level 3 to see the carillonist performing. (Visitors subject to acrophobia are recommended to visit level 2 only.) An optional spiral stairway between levels 2 and 3 allows for up-close views of some of the largest bells.

DESCRIPTION:Reconceiving Merit and Devotion at Work\, with Evidence-Based Illustrations from Academic Careers\n\nThis paper draws on research to argue that the cultural schema of work devotion – the cognitive\, emotional and moral understanding of work as a calling and an ostensible marker of merit– promises a workplace community and a sense of purpose. These rewards are consistent with the biological propensity for social connections\, which can help protect our physical and mental health. However\, the benefits of work devotion are not equally available to all socio-demographic groups. Further\, the work devotion mandate can feel coercive\, justify overwork\, deplete engagement with family and community\, and lead to moral distress. The paper presents evidence from the exemplar case of academic science to illustrate how small\, locally led changes in the department\, framed as consistent with professional values of merit and devotion\, could allow scholars to benefit more equally from the work devotion schema while also mitigating some of its detriments.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:A Behavioral Theory of Statistics\, joint with Wolfgang Pesendorfer
DESCRIPTION:We present a deterministic theory of the statistician based on two preferences: the estimation preference describes the statistician’s view of how well input data and models fit together and the prediction preference describes how well predictions and models fit together. Standard assumptions on these preferences\, together with a consistency condition\, imply that the estimation preference has an additively separable representation: the first term is the function representing the prediction preference\, and the second term is a penalty function that depends only on the model. We relate our two- preference statistical theories to existing methods of classical and Bayesian estimation\, identifying common features and show that\, despite diGerences in terminology\, many of these methods are equivalent. By optimizing over models\, we derive the fit between input data and predictions from our statistical theories. We call these derived relationships empirical descriptions and identify necessary and suGicient conditions under which an empirical description is induced by some statistical theory. Finally\, we characterize empirical descriptions that can be interpreted as consequences of a parametrized class of statistical theories of updating. The parametrization includes Bayesian\, maximum likelihood and behavioral updating.
