SUMMARY:Performance:Eva Albalghiti\, carillon
DESCRIPTION:Eva Albalghiti performs on the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Carillon\, an instrument of 60 bells with the lowest bell (bourdon) weighing 6 tons.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Lurie Carillon every weekday that classes are in session. During these recitals\, visitors may take the elevator to level 2 to view the largest bells\, or to level 3 to see the carillonist performing. (Visitors subject to acrophobia are recommended to visit level 2 only.) An optional spiral stairway between levels 2 and 3 allows for up-close views of some of the largest bells.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:How Health Concerns Shape Clean Energy Policy
DESCRIPTION:Clean energy is widely framed as a public health win. So why does it often trigger opposition\, and how should those conflicts be resolved? Using Michigan as a grounding case\, the panel explores what happens when health evidence\, local governance\, equity concerns and climate goals collide - and what we can do about it to meet urgent climate goals. This timely conversation will be moderated by Eliza Barclay\, climate opinion editor at The New York Times\, whose work explores how science\, climate policy and public trust collide. She will lead a lively discussion with University of Michigan faculty experts in energy systems\, public health\, equity and governance on how the U.S. can expand clean energy while building trust and protecting community health. \n\nPanelists: \nCarina Gronlund\, Ph.D.\, M.P.H.\nResearch Associate Professor\nInstitute for Social Research\, Survey Research Center\n\nSarah Mills\, Ph.D.\nDirector\, Center for EmPowering Communities\nClinical Associate Professor of Practice of Urban Planning\nTaubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\n\nParth Vaishnav\, Ph.D.\nAssistant Professor\, School for Environment and Sustainability\n\nPresented by the Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation's Sandy-Hassmiller Climate & Health Initiative\, in collaboration with the Graham Sustainability Institute.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Learning seminar in algebraic combinatorics: Preprojective algebras and weak order
DESCRIPTION:So far\, we've mostly talked about torsion classes for Dynkin quivers\, which give the Tamari lattice and other Cambrian lattices. This week\, we will talk about torsion classes for preprojective algebras\, which give the weak order on Coxeter groups of types A\, D\, and E. As usual\, we will do many examples using the symmetric group\, where the stability fan turns out to be the braid arrangement.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Math Grad Show and Tell Seminar: PDE in AG\, and AG in PDE?
DESCRIPTION:Algebraic geometry studies geometric shapes using algebraic methods. But somehow differential equations show up! I will give an overview of what algebraic geometers (at large) care about while highlighting the role analysis plays: for example\, hodge theory uses elliptic equations to study topology of complex manifolds\, and Monge–Ampère equations are fundamental in the study of Calabi—Yaus\, the so-called hidden dimension of the universe.\n\nConversely\, AG also gives back to differential geometry\, for example by giving algebraic criteria for existence of canonical metrics and helping with moduli problems. This talk is intended to be an introduction to algebraic geometry with a PDE twist\, and no background in either field is needed.

SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs:Personal Statements for Pre-Health Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Personal Statements for Pre-Health\nOne of the biggest hurdles for many in the grad school application process is the Personal Statement. This workshop will support you in the writing process. The Personal Statement requires a different form and serves a different function than other forms of professional and academic writing. Furthermore\, the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) and the Associated American Dental Schools Application Service (AADSAS) provide limited directions and guidance for personal statement writing for students applying to Medical or Dental programs.\nTogether\, with a Hub coach and your peers\, we will work together to establish what makes a powerful and effective personal statement for Medical School\, Dental School\, and other Pre-Health programs at an ideal time ahead of summer deadlines. \n\nYou should attend this workshop if you are:\nA liberal arts and/or sciences (LSA) student pursuing pre-health graduate programs\nInterested in learning more about the possibility (and realities) of grad school\nDeciding if advanced study is a step you want to take\nCurious about what writing a Personal Statement entails (i.e what even is it?)\nLooking for some guidance for assessing if your Personal Statement is aligned with your interests and goals\n\nWhat you’ll gain by attending:\nInsight into best practices when writing a Personal Statement from various perspectives\nUnderstanding of different requirements and formats for different graduate schools\nHow to attack the writing process in an order that makes the most sense\nExploring and deciding between your varied experiences to provide schools with a well-rounded portrayal\nDiscover resources available to you throughout your application process\nIdentify areas of improvement within your existing personal statement
