DESCRIPTION:Etgar Keret is a celebrated Israeli author and filmmaker known for his unique\, surreal\, and darkly comedic short stories. Keret spent time engaging with AI models to test the limits of what a machine could generate about stories and narratives. In his talk \"Me\, Myself and AI\" Keret notably explores the intersection of human creativity and algorithms. \n\nKERET BIO \nBorn in Ramat Gan in 1967\, Etgar Keret is a leading voice in Israeli literature and film. His books have been published in over four dozen languages and his writing has appeared in The New York Times\, Le Monde\, The New Yorker\, The Guardian\, The Paris Review and Zoetrope\, among others. Over a hundred short films and several feature films have been based on his stories. He has received the Book Publishers Association of Israel's Platinum Prize several times\, and the Newman Prize for Literature (2012). In 2010\, Keret was honored in France with the decoration of Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. In 2007\, Keret and Shira Geffen won the Cannes Film Festival's \"Caméra d'Or\" award for their movie Jellyfish\, and Best Director Award from the French Society of Dramatic Authors and Composers. The two also co-wrote and directed \"The Middleman\" (2019)\, a French mini-series for ARTE\, which won the best screenplay award at Festival de la Fiction in La Rochelle. Keret was awarded the 2016 Charles Bronfman Prize. His latest collection\, \"Fly Already\,\" won Israel’s most prestigious literary award\, the Sapir Prize (2018) and a National Jewish Book Award (2019). Since 2021\, he has been publishing the weekly newsletter \"Alphabet Soup\" on Substack. In 2022\, Keret presented an exhibition about his mother at the Jewish Museum Berlin. His newest short-story collection is Autocorrect.

DESCRIPTION:The Institute for Research on Women & Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies at the University of Michigan are pleased to welcome acclaimed author\, poet\, and scholar Honorée Fanonne Jeffers as the featured speaker for the Vivian R. Shaw Lecture.\nEstablished in 1997 by Ellen Agress\, the Vivian R. Shaw Lecture is presented biennially by IRWG and Women’s and Gender Studies. The lecture was created to address “real world issues” related to women and gender and has brought distinguished scholars\, writers\, and public intellectuals to the University of Michigan for nearly three decades.\n\nHonorée Fanonne Jeffers is an essayist\, novelist\, poet\, and student of United States history whose work illuminates the intersections of race\, gender\, memory\, and social justice. She is the author of seven books spanning poetry\, fiction\, and nonfiction. Her debut novel\, The Love Songs of W.E.B. Du Bois\, was an instant New York Times bestseller\, an Oprah’s Book Club selection\, and a recipient of numerous honors\, including the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction and the Dayton Literary Peace Prize. The novel has been celebrated as one of the most significant works of contemporary American literature\, earning recognition from The Atlantic\, Time\, NPR\, and The New York Times.\n\nAn award-winning poet\, Jeffers is also the author of The Age of Phillis\, a groundbreaking collection based on fifteen years of archival research into the life and legacy of Phillis Wheatley Peters\, the first Africana woman to publish a book in the Americas. The collection received the NAACP Image Award for Poetry and the Lenore Marshall Prize and has become a widely taught text in classrooms across the United States.\n\nJeffers serves as Editor-at-Large for The Kenyon Review and has received fellowships from organizations including the National Endowment for the Arts\, the American Antiquarian Society\, and the Library of Congress.
