SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Goldye di Shvartze Khaznte: Black Woman Cantor of the Harlem Renaissance Era
DESCRIPTION:Join in a conversation with Shahanna McKinney-Baldon moderated by Professor Bryan Roby\, on the story of Madame Goldye Steiner\, the trailblazing African-American vocalist of the Harlem Renaissance era whose career spanned vaudeville\, Yiddish theater\, early jazz\, and the “golden age” of Jewish cantorial singing\, or khazones. McKinney-Baldon's research uncovers a vital yet almost forgotten African-American and Jewish story\, and uses the lenses of Afrofuturism and Yiddish revivalism to focus a critical and timely discussion on voice\, individual and group identity\, and the role of the artist-philosopher in periods of political upheaval.\n\nHosted by The Network: Jewish People of Color of Greater Ann Arbor

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Art Fare Exhibit Closing Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a closing reception of Art Fare on Sunday\, January 25\, from 2:00–4:00 p.m. in the West Lobby of Matthaei Botanical Gardens. This informal meet-and-greet is a chance to connect with participating artists\, reflect on the work together\, and enjoy the final day of the exhibition. Free and open to the public - no registration required.\n\nExhibit details:\nFollowing the food chain\, at some point\, everything we humans consume for nourishment comes from plants. Fruit\, shoots\, and roots contribute to our diets and our culture. The food we eat and how we dine has frequently been a topic in artworks\, from still lifes by Flemish artist Clara Peeters to Cezanne's apples to Andy Warhol's \"Campbell's Soup Cans\". Fresh on the vine or served up on the dinner table\, Matthaei Botanical Gardens will host a group exhibition of works inspired by the food we eat and our dining rituals. Free and open to the public at Matthaei Botanical Gardens

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Exhibition Tour: American Sampler with Curator Julie Ault
DESCRIPTION:Guest artist and curator Julie Ault will lead a conversation about her new project American Sampler: Activating the Archive.  This research-driven\, immersive exhibition in UMMA’s Vertical Gallery is a collaboration with the Joseph A. Labadie Collection of anarchism\, protest\, and social movements housed in the U-M Library’s Special Collections Research Center.\n \nThe exhibition centers on 1950s–1970s movements for Black freedom\, civil rights\, and antiwar activism\, clarifying the aspirations and effects as well as the violent opposition these movements encountered. American Sampler invites visitors to examine how legacies of grassroots organizing and protest in U.S. history shape the present. This ambitious project is the inaugural collaboration of the new Labadie Collection and UMMA Fellowship Program.\n \nFree and open to the public\, registration required.\n
