SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CAS Lecture. Nagorno-Karabakh: The Next Chapter
DESCRIPTION:The Center for Armenian Studies at the University of Michigan is honored to host Dr. Philip Gamaghelyan\, a leading scholar and practitioner in conflict resolution\, for a thought-provoking lecture on the evolving dynamics in Nagorno-Karabakh following the Azerbaijani conquest of Artsakh. As an associate professor at the Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies at the University of San Diego and author of Conflict Resolution Beyond the International Relations Paradigm: Evolving Designs as a Transformative Practice in Nagorno-Karabakh and Syria (2017)\, Dr. Gamaghelyan brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this critical discussion.\n\nDr. Gamaghelyan's work focuses on the politics of memory in conflict zones and the need for innovative approaches to conflict resolution that move beyond traditional paradigms. As a co-founder of the Imagine Center for Conflict Transformation and managing editor of the Caucasus Edition: Journal of Conflict Transformation\, he has been deeply involved in engaging policymakers\, journalists\, educators\, and social scientists across post-Soviet states\, Turkey\, Syria\, and other conflict regions.\n\nIn this online lecture-discussion\, Dr. Gamaghelyan will critically re-evaluate current conflict resolution interventions in the context of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict\, exploring the reasons for the failures of peacebuilding up to date the possible role that the local and international scholarly community and civil society can play future of the region. Attendees will gain insights into the challenges and opportunities for sustainable peace in Nagorno-Karabakh and the broader South Caucasus\, informed by Dr. Gamaghelyan's extensive research and on-the-ground experience. This event promises to be an illuminating and timely exploration of how conflict resolution can be reimagined in one of the most complex and historically contentious regions of the world.\n\nZoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/92996729099 (Online Only)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student CA Seminar - Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The Cartan-Serre-Grothendieck theorem implies that all the cohomological subtleties associated to a coherent sheaf on a projective space disappear after twisting by a sufficiently high multiple of the hyperplane line bundle. Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity gives a quantitative measure of how much one has to twist in order that these properties take effect. It then governs the algebraic complexity of a coherent sheaf. In this talk\, we give the definition and basic properties of Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity\, and introduce some applications.
