SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Rethinking how we teach organic chemistry: Innovations afforded by universal design
DESCRIPTION:Using sign language to convey a concept or describe a transition state is a powerful way for students to think about the electron pushing formalisms we write on paper and recognize mechanistic trends. Using our hands as models transforms the two-dimensional static framework of writing symbolic drawings on our page into 3-D opportunities for students to conceptualize a molecule or even a transition state. The Sign Language Incorporation in Chemistry Education (SLICE) project was initiated by a group of faculty and Deaf/Hard of Hearing (D/HH) students at the Rochester Institute of Technology to address the language vacuum of STEM signs in organic chemistry. The result of our work has had a positive impact on the classroom culture and performance gains of D/HH students taking the organic chemistry courses. Now\, efforts have begun to address STEM signs in general chemistry and biochemistry. Our studies are also now exploring the impact of universal design across all students in the organic chemistry curriculum.

SUMMARY:Meeting:Student Combinatorics: Discrete Complex Analysis: T-holomorphic Functions
DESCRIPTION:Discrete complex analysis is a useful tool for analyzing limits of fluctuations of centered height functions. After describing this motivation in the context of random tilings of regions\, we will introduce discrete holomorphic functions on a square lattice via a natural construction\, and then generalize this by defining t-holomorphic functions on a triangular lattice. Time permitting\, we will discuss how to define t-holomorphic functions on non-triangular lattices.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Tax Preferential Treatment of Residential Housing and Migration
DESCRIPTION:This paper evaluates how household location decisions are impacted by federal deductions of location-specific costs\, including state and local taxes and mortgage interest. When these expenses are tax deductible\, they reduce the after-tax cost differential in house prices and taxes across states and metropolitan areas. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 (TCJA) reduced the benefits of these deductions by increasing the standard deduction and capping state and local tax deductions at $10\,000. Using a difference-in-differences methodology that exploits variation in exposure to the TCJA and a panel of household residences\, I find that the reduction in deduction benefits increased the probability of high-income households moving to a different metropolitan area. Conditional on moving\, these households sought out lower-tax destinations.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Shifting Roots: Hair is the Garden We Wear
DESCRIPTION:Detroit barber and artist Tzu Poré talks with writer Kahn Santori Davison about Poré's project Shifting Roots. The project fuses symbolic hair design\, ritual healing\, and fine art into one unified ecosystem of transformation. Through intentional grooming\, visual storytelling\, and community activation\, this initiative presents identity as terrain—where hair becomes soil\, and fine art becomes the bloom. Poré will share how his cultural roots shape his work in the garden\, on canvas\, and as a trained barber/cultural griot.\n\nAbout Tzu Poré:\nEducated in the early '90s at College for Creative Studies in Detroit\, Michigan\, Tzu Poré is an award-winning interdisciplinary artist whose work explores the themes of Black Afro-Caribbean Americana humanity\, historical socio-economic position\, and ancient tradition in the modern world\, richly informed by strong community-family bonds.\n\nWith West Indian origins and a Pan-African world view\, Poré\, in 1997\, enlisted in the US Army. While serving as an aviation mechanic\, Poré honed a deeper understanding of methods and processes of fusing materials such as minerals and solids that he has since used to increase the physical texture and visual depth in his paintings.\n\nShortly after being discharged in 2001\, he embarked on an exploration of hair as an artistic medium of texture and sculpture\, both on and off the canvas\, while moonlighting as a barber in three major African-American markets—Detroit\, Philadelphia\, and Los Angeles.\n\nWith nearly three decades of travel and experience\, Poré reemerges with new work that culminates in the perfect union of interdisciplinary artistry and a vividly dynamic multinational skillset. Poré's continued evolution as an artist allows him to boldly express with the unconventional creative range of mediums and processes that he uses to confront the challenge of affecting depth within two-dimensional art.\n\nAbout Kahn Santori Davison\nKahn Santori Davison\, based in Detroit\, is a music writer for *The Metro Times*. He was formerly an art columnist for *The Gazette News *and an Arts and Entertainment writer for *The Michigan Citizen*. He has served as a creative writing instructor at Detroit Impact Community Center and InsideOut Literary Arts Project. He was one half of the poetry group Khaos and co-star in the award-winning play Mahogany Dreams. He’s a Cave Canem fellow whose work has been featured in *The Alabama Poetry Society*\, *The Entoitist*\, *The Baltimore Review*\, *London’s X-Bout*\, *Barbaric Yap*\, *Callaloo*\, *Black Reniaissance Noire*\, and *The Litchfield Review*. He has read and lectured widely in Europe and the United States.\n\nDavison served as a 2023 Kresge Eminent Artist panelist\, and a 2017 Kresge Artist Fellowship panelist in Literary Arts.
