SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:On the geometric approach to the Painlevé equivalence problem
DESCRIPTION:We show how the techniques from the Okamoto-Sakai geometric theory of Painlevé equations can be used to solve the Painlevé equivalence\, i.e.\, how to recognize an equation as a Painlevé equation and find an explicit change of variables transforming it into some canonical form. We illustrate the geometric approach by considering two examples recently obtained by M. van der Put and J. Top in their study of a certain ansatz of isomonodromic deformations of linear ODEs. We provide explicit coordinate transformations identifying these examples with standard form of some Painlevé equations and also explicitly identify their Hamiltonians.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Suave Mechanicals: A Celebration of Nine Volumes on the Art and History of Bookbinding (2013–2025)
DESCRIPTION:Explore the art of judging books by their covers! This exhibit highlights a selection of rare books from the University of Michigan's collections\, each of them representing binding topics featured in \"Suave Mechanicals\,\" the acclaimed nine-volume series dedicated to the study of the art and history of bookbinding. \n\nSpanning from 2013 to 2025\, \"Suave Mechanicals\" contains 85 essays\, 27 of which examine the same type of binding as the artifacts on display. Edited by Julia Miller and published by Cathleen A. Baker of The Legacy Press\, the series was conceived as a platform for fresh\, in-depth scholarship on bookbinding\, from its earliest origins to contemporary practice.  \n\nContributors include first-time authors and established experts — bookbinders\, conservators\, librarians\, curators\, catalogers\, book artists\, collectors\, and historians — offering a vibrant array of voices and insights into the craftsmanship\, culture\, and enduring fascination of bookbinding.\n\nJoin us for Coffee with the Curator on October 1\, 10am-12pm.

SUMMARY:Presentation:“A Dynamic Evaluation of Parental Marriage and Children’s Skills\"
DESCRIPTION:Join the Stone Center for Inequality Dynamics as we host Emilio Borghesan\, an assistant professor of economics at the University of Michigan. He will present\, “A Dynamic Evaluation of Parental Marriage and Children’s Skills.” \n\nAbstract: “This paper develops a unified dynamic treatment effects framework to examine how parental marital patterns affect children’s cognitive skills. Using Panel Study of Income Dynamics Child Development Survey data\, we analyze the timing and sequencing of family structure changes throughout childhood. Using a clustering analysis treating marital trajectories as sequences\, we identify six distinct marital trajectory clusters from continuously single to stably married families. The marital history clusters differ considerably on variables that are predetermined at the time of birth as well as on endogenous variables like time investments and test scores. We then estimate a dynamic model of marital status and children’s outcomes that allows for age-varying selection into marriage and divorce. The estimated model reveals substantial sorting on gains into marriage and negative average effects of divorce on cognitive skills that attenuate with time.”

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Homework in Climate Economics: Household Production\, Environmental Preferences\, and Climate Policy (with Hannah Rhodenhiser and David Lagakos)
DESCRIPTION:This paper studies emissions from household energy use\, which account for one third of U.S. emissions. We draw on a new survey to document that some households purchase energy-saving equipment because\, in addition to cutting energy costs\, they want to reduce emissions. We build a macro-environmental model in which emissions result from home production tasks involving either clean or dirty equipment\, and some households have distaste for their own emissions. We analyze the most cost-effective subsidy on clean equipment. We show that changes in households' emissions distaste have similar effects on household emissions as a modest sized carbon tax.
