SUMMARY:Well-being:Mind Matters: Suicide Risk During Pregnancy and the Postpartum Period
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Psychiatry\, Zero to Thrive\, and the Perinatal Mental Health Services and Policy Program are pleased to present Mind Matters: Suicide Risk During Pregnancy and The Postpartum Period.\n\nWelcoming a new baby can be a joyful moment for families\, though it also marks a major life change. As with any life-changing event\, parents-to-be will experience a wide range of emotions and not all of them may be the positive\, happy feelings they expect. Mental health concerns during pregnancy and the first year of parenthood are not uncommon with studies showing recent rises in diagnoses of anxiety\, depression\, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Among these mental health concerns\, suicide is the leading cause of injury and death among pregnant people.\n\nThis Suicide Prevention Month\, join our experts as they break down the risk factors for suicide during pregnancy and the first year of parenthood as well as prevention and treatment options that save lives. They will share key research findings\, resources to help support pregnant and postpartum people\, as well as personal stories of hope and resilience in the face of suicidal thoughts and behaviors.\n\nMind Matters is a free\, virtual community education series for individuals living with a mental health condition as well as their loved ones. Join us in real-time via Zoom to learn more about the topic of perinatal suicide.\n\n \nNote: Our presenters will discuss sensitive topics related to suicide. While the goal of this presentation is to educate about suicide prevention and highlight stories of hope\, we acknowledge that this topic may be difficult for some viewers. Throughout the presentation\, our presenters will share relevant content warnings for each portion to support a healthy viewing experience for everyone.

SUMMARY:Performance:Symphony Band
DESCRIPTION:The University of Michigan Symphony Band opens its season with a concert that boldly announces the start of a new year. First we celebrate the 200th anniversary of one of the first original overtures written for winds. Then the music of contemporary American composer James Stephenson takes over\, including the commission of a new setting of his \"Spinning Wheel\" for trumpet and wind ensemble featuring SMTD Professor Robert Sullivan as trumpet soloist. Another Symphony Band commission opens the second half from U-M alum Shuying Li before the concert concludes with Pulitzer-Prize winning composer Morton Gould's classic Symphony no. 4 for band.\n\nJason Fettig\, conductor\n\nPROGRAM\n\nFelix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy/Ed. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.\n\n[The Hatcher Library will be closed December 21 to January 1.]

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. Threads of Tradition: The Art of Ukrainian Vyshyvanka
DESCRIPTION:The act of embroidering and weaving designs onto cloth is deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditions. Embellished clothing (sorochky)\, ritual cloths (rushnyky)\, and household textiles accompany a person from birth until death\, punctuating important life events in between. Ukrainian embroidered clothing is now officially celebrated with an annual Vyshyvanka Day observed throughout the world in May.\n\nTo see photos and read more about exhibited items\, visit https://myumi.ch/AZedA\n \n The embroideries and textiles exhibited are from the private collections of Arnie Klein\, Solomia Soroka\, Katerina Sirinyok-Dolgaryova\, and from the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum located in Hamtramck\, Michigan.\n \n The exhibit opens on September 5\, 2024\, in 1010 Weiser Hall\, 500 Church Street\, Ann Arbor.
