DESCRIPTION:The Nam Center is excited to support this event with the local fabric artist Kim DeBord in celebration of the AAPi month!\n   \n   Jogakbo\, a traditional Korean form of patchwork\, is a technique for creating wrapping cloth (Bojagi) rooted in resourcefulness and intention. In this hands-on workshop\, artist Kim Debord of Cluster Museum and Invisible Engines will introduce participants to the process of jogakbo. Learn the unique piecework technique that creates a double-sided cloth and take home your own bojagi. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:“Nature in Pieces: Why Large\, Continuous\, Connected Forests Hold More Life”
DESCRIPTION:As part of the 2026 Summer Lecture Series at the University of Michigan Biological Station (UMBS)\, Dr. Thiago Gonçalves-Souza will give a free\, public talk focused on a simple but important question: When forests are broken into pieces\, can biodiversity be maintained across the broader landscape? \n\nUsing data across six continents\, he challenges the idea of fragmentation in his talk titled\, “Nature in Pieces: Why Large\, Continuous\, Connected Forests Hold More Life.”\n\nThe postdoctoral fellow at the University of Michigan will explore why protecting large\, continuous\, and connected forests remains essential for conserving biodiversity.  \n\nGonçalves-Souza\, a quantitative community ecologist\, teaches a General Ecology Lecture course at UMBS.\n\nHis current research centers around synthesizing the effects of human-mediated habitat loss and climate change on animals and plants. With a broad taxonomic scope ranging from arthropods to mammals\, Gonçalves-Souza uses quantitative tools to unravel the intricate dynamics of biodiversity change. He also investigates the utility of traits in predicting species redistributions across local and global scales.\n\nThe University of Michigan Biological Station serves as a gathering place to learn from the natural world\, advance research and education\, and inspire action. We leverage over a century of research and transformative experiences to drive discoveries and solutions to benefit Michigan and beyond.\n\nFounded in 1909\, UMBS supports long-term research and education through immersive\, field-based courses and features state-of-the-art equipment and facilities for data collection and analysis to help any field researcher be productive. It is where students and scientists from across the globe live and work as a community to learn from the place.\n\nThe Summer Lecture Series is a tradition at UMBS\, where we explore scientific topics with distinguished guest speakers from across the country so the community can learn about our natural world.\n\nThe free\, public talks are on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. in the spring and summer in Gates Lecture Hall at the University of Michigan Biological Station\, located at 9133 Biological Rd. in Pellston\, Michigan — about 20 miles south of the Mackinac Bridge.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Muted Volumes: Book-Objects\, Patterned Papers\, and the Closed Stacks of Buhr
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit in the Clark Library rotunda focuses on handmade decorative patterned papers when exploring books stored at the library's Buhr Offsite Shelving Facility. Decorative paper\, noticed when walking through the stack's aisles or surprising you when you casually flip through a book\, can really catch your eye. But because the Buhr stacks are closed from browsing\, the density and dimensionality of its nearly 3 million books are reduced to title searches on a screen.\n\nAs a response to these reflections\, artist and library staff member Stephanie Osorio shares her handbound unopenable book-objects as symbolic stand-ins for forgotten books at Buhr — the books that don’t get a chance to be noticed. Along with the book-objects are the carved woodblocks that made prints to decorate them. Some books from Buhr that inspired this project with their original decorated patterned papers will also be on display.\n\nView the exhibit anytime the Hatcher Library is open\, and join us for an opening reception on Thursday\, May 14th\, 5pm - 6:30pm\, for an opportunity to hear from the artist and engage with the book-objects.

SUMMARY:Performance:Open Stage Showcase: Bob Hoot and Peter Bedford
DESCRIPTION:Our Open Stage Showcase lets us shine a light on some of our standout performers who’ve graced our Open Stage through the year.\n\nBob Hoot of HOOT and Hollers is a singer/songwriter living in Whitmore Lake\, MI. Hoot moved back to Michigan in January 2024 after 45 years in Madison WI where he performed and recorded with with Tent Show Troubadours (2016–2023) and HOOT and Hollers (est. 2020– ) Hoot has been performing solo shows in and around the Ann Arbor area\, primarily in the summer outdoor concert season. Set lists include songs from Hoot’s catalog of over 115 originals\, as well as favorite covers. This show will also be a CD release event for the latest Hoot and Hollers album titled Ain’t My First Rodeo. HOOT and Hollers music is available on all streaming services. Bob Hoot will be joined by Gabrielle Hartman (violin).\n\nPeter Bedford began to teach himself how to play guitar after listening to James Taylor's \"Sweet Baby James\" album in 1970.  After teaching school for 40 years and continuing to play and teach private lessons\, he moved back to Michigan and began to attend and play at the Ark's Open Stage nights.  Through the luck of the draw and with the support of many loyal friends he found himself on stage more often than not.  Pete says that he is deliberately keeping a lot of old songs alive by performing them and talking about them.  With a songbook of nearly 200 songs in his head\, you can expect to hear a sampling of them at the Showcase.  Pete frequently performs with life-long friend\, Gary Putrow accompanying him on bass under the name \"Pete and Putts\". Gary will join Pete on a number of tunes.
