SUMMARY:Exhibition:ICE in the Heartland: Community Impacts of Worksite Immigration Raids
DESCRIPTION:ICE in the Heartland showcases a multifaceted project that gathers and disseminates the stories of communities impacted by immigration worksite raids with the aim of bringing underrepresented narratives to news media\, classroom\, and public discourse. This project comprises qualitative public health research conducted in impacted communities and visual arts generated from the research outcomes. Research teams of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Michigan\, led by Professor William Lopez\, and the University of Iowa\, led by Professor Nicole Novak\, collaborated with a range of community members and organizers at sites of six large-scale immigration worksite raids that occurred in 2018 in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Ohio\, Tennessee\, and Texas. The researchers visited these sites\, spoke to advocates\, detainees\, their families\, and other community members. In conversation with the seventy-seven interviews\, artists Dalia Harris and Carolina Jones Ortiz generated ten images that comprise ICE in the Heartland. On display with the artworks are community member testimonies\, analysis on the public health detriments to immigration worksite raids and deportation\, insights to the artists’ methods\, and the curricular materials used in public outreach programs. \n\nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M.

DESCRIPTION:9:30 AM  \"Opportunities to Improve Water Quality through Urban + Architectural Design\"\nJen Maigret (Professor of Architecture\, Climate Futures Director\, University of Michigan)\nJen Maigret is a Professor of Architecture and a licensed architect with over two decades of professional practice experience and master's degrees in both architecture and ecology. Her research and creative practice reside at the intersection of architecture\, climate action and design excellence as tools toward improved ecological and human health. \n\n11:00 AM  \"Impacts of Climate Change on Freshwater: The Important Role of Dissolved Oxygen\"\nKevin Rose (Associate Professor and Director of the Darrin Freshwater Institute\, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute)\nDr. Kevin Rose leads a research team at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York. His research spans ecology and biogeochemistry\, focusing predominantly on understanding broad-scale patterns and processes in freshwater ecosystems such as lakes and ponds. A goal of his group is to forecast the future state of aquatic ecosystems in a regional to global context\, with an emphasis on understanding how freshwater ecosystems are changing in response to factors such as land use and climate change.  This interdisciplinary research draws on diverse skills in biology\, ecology\, biogeochemistry\, advanced environmental sensors\, and computational modeling. Dr. Rose's research findings have been published in high-impact journals such as Science and Nature and featured in media outlets such as NPR\, the Washington Post\, Fox News\, and Popular Science magazine. \n\n1:00 PM  \"Tiny Carriers\, Big Impact: How Bacteria Drive Transmission of Virus and Antibiotic Resistance Gene in Water\"\nYun Shen (Assistant Professor\, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering\, George Washington University)\nDr. Yun Shen's research is addressing critical challenges in the nexus of environment and health. She is investigating the transmission and control of environmental pathogens in water and wastewater. Especially\, her work is focusing on pathogens not as isolated particles\, but in their clustered forms. Her work explores bacteria-virus complexities\, vesicle-associated viruses\, plastic-pathogen interactions\, in the complex environments. In addition\, she examines how bacterial pathogens respond to oxidative stresses and modulate host–pathogen interactions.
