SUMMARY:Film Screening:MCSP Social Justice Film Series: There Went the Neighborhood
DESCRIPTION:As part of Ann Arbor 200\, the Ann Arbor District Library and 7 Cylinders Studio (7CS) have produced a documentary film about the closing of Ann Arbor's Jones School. In 1965\, the Board of Education closed the majority-Black school. Ann Arbor joined a nationwide trend of school desegregation during the Civil Rights Era. But for these young students\, the loss of a neighborhood school foreshadowed changes to their close-knit community. Gentrification came to Ann Arbor on the heels of desegregation.\n\nIn the making of this film\, 7CS filmmakers and AADL archivists interviewed over thirty former Jones students and Black community leaders. They shared memories of Jones School and \"The Old Neighborhood\"—the areas now known as Kerrytown and Water Hill. A filmed walking tour\, studio interviews\, and historical photos form the core of the film.\n\nAfter the screening\, there will be a panel discussion and Q&A with director Donald Harrison\, participants Omer Jean Winborn and Roger Brown\, and producer Heidi Morse.

SUMMARY:Film Screening:Search Engines | Free Screening of Paul Preciado's Orlando
DESCRIPTION:Register here: https://forms.gle/Lc3Zxi8viCeeS7pg8\n\n “Come\, come! I’m sick to death of this particular self. I want another.” Taking Virginia Woolf’s novel “Orlando: A Biography” as his starting point\, academic virtuoso turned filmmaker Paul B. Preciado fashioned the documentary ORLANDO\, MY POLITICAL BIOGRAPHY—a personal essay\, historical analysis\, and social manifesto. For almost a century\, Woolf’s eponymous hero(ine) has inspired readers with their gender fluidity as well as their physical and spiritual metamorphoses across a three-hundred-year span. In making his film\, Preciado invited a diverse group of more than twenty trans and nonbinary people to play the role of Orlando and to participate in this shared biography. Together\, they perform interpretations of the novel\, weaving into Woolf’s narrative their own stories of transition and identity formation. Not content to simply update a groundbreaking work\, Preciado interrogates the relevance of “Orlando” in the ongoing struggle to secure dignity for trans people worldwide.\n\nWatch the official trailer here: https://youtu.be/LpGFplNRUmc?si=4TXIapiyMX0YaI7u\n\nThis event will be in person. Doors will open at 6:00 PM and the program will begin at 6:15 PM. Please be sure to register and come early to snag a seat! Screening will be followed by a conversation between Jesse Beal\, director of the U-M Spectrum Center\, and Laurie Pohutsky\, the Speaker Pro Tempore for the MI House of Representatives and representative of the 17th House District in Livonia and the audience.\n\nIf you anticipate needing accommodations to participate or would like help filling out the registration form\, please email Giselle Mills at gimills@umich.edu.
