DESCRIPTION:A Benefit for Musician and Artist Prosperity Project\n\nKnown to locals as the founder and director of Ann Arbor’s Grekin School of Music\, composer\, songwriter\, and multi-instrumentalist Joshua Grekin takes the stage with his own unique blend of soulful\, jazzy\, feel-good music. Joined by an all-star band of Detroit-area veterans\, Grekin will perform music spanning four decades as a composer and performer\, including selections from his nine original musicals.\n\nGrekin’s belief that music has the power to heal and bring people together led him to found the nonprofit Musician & Artist Prosperity Project (MAPP). This concert doubles as a fundraiser for MAPP: there will be opportunities to donate at the performance\, and all profits from the evening will benefit the organization.

DESCRIPTION:PlayFest is a reading festival highlighting the work of 4 student playwrights whose work was selected from multiple submissions. Selected playwrights have worked the entire semester developing their work with student directors and dramaturgs. Guest artists from the professional theatre world have been invited and they will adjudicate for the festival and give creative teams critical feedback\, not only of the performances\, but also the development of the scripts. \n\nPlayFest runs from Thursday\, April 23 through Saturday\, April 25. She has written for a number of television shows\, including\, *Claw*\, *Gossip Girl*\, and *Genius: MLK/X*\, just to name a few.\n\n\nAndrew Morton is a Lead Facilitator at Telling It. Originally from the UK\, Morton is a queer immigrant\, playwright\, and theatre-maker currently based in Detroit. As the founding producing artistic collaborator at Every Soul Arts\, he leads healing-centered arts projects amplifying the voices of young people impacted by homelessness\, including the award-winning Sofa Stories project.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:'Redefining the Crown' Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:\"Artist’s statement: For centuries\, hair has been critical to how human beings understand racial categories\, gender designations\, and class status. For Black women in particular\, hair has and continues to be tied to ethnic identity and a history of self-determination\, social justice\, and survival. Thus\, chemotherapy-induced hair loss is a devastating event for Black patients who are also more likely to be diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer subtypes necessitating chemotherapy\, carrying a 40% increased risk of dying from breast cancer.\n\nRedefining the ‘crown’: Approaching chemotherapy-induced alopecia among Black patients with breast cancer” started as a manuscript published in the scientific journal Cancer. But the work could not stop there. “Redefining the Crown” then metamorphosed into a photo essay project aimed at exploring the breast cancer journeys of six Black women and their experiences with hair loss due to chemotherapy. Though the project centers the experience of Black women\, we also acknowledge that breast cancer and chemotherapy-induced alopecia impact individuals of all genders. While the goal is to illuminate the unique stories of Black women who are affected uncommonly by this common disease\, the project is also a call to action regarding the disproportionate breast cancer-related mortality facing Black communities.\n\nIn this portraiture series\, photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks. This exhibition examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy and how their sense of cultural pride and personal identity have been redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThese survivors have redefined their own crowns. More profound than the new hairstyles they don after hair loss are the invisible crowns that they choose to wear each day: gratitude\, faith\, and resilience. What do their words mean to you?
