SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Invention of Rum in a Era of Revolution
DESCRIPTION:This talk\, building on Jordan’s 2025 book The Invention of Rum: Creating the Quintessential Atlantic Commodity\, will present a new story of how rum was invented\, made\, sold\, and consumed in the Atlantic world\, and how those developments intersected with the American Revolution. He will introduce the audience to a commodity that itself revolutionized the Atlantic world in large part due to its ubiquity and affordability. He will then home in on various moments in the lead-up\, course\, and aftermath of the American Revolution when the market for—and meanings embedded within—rum shaped the age of revolutions.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:FAST Lecture | Archaeology\, Heritage\, and Community During War: The Jebel Barkal Archaeological Project\, Sudan\, and Other International Efforts
DESCRIPTION:The brutal war in Sudan has caused hundreds of thousands of deaths and has displaced at least 20 percent of the population of Sudan since its outbreak in April 2023. In this talk\, Geoff Emberling will outline some of the ways that the Jebel Barkal Archaeological Project\, based in part at the Kelsey Museum\, has worked to support our colleagues\, local communities\, and national antiquities authorities in Sudan. As a collaboratively organized and community-engaged project\, our connections and our responsibilities have been deeper than would otherwise be the case. Geoff will also outline some of the ethical issues that have troubled international members of the team in wrestling with how to proceed.\n\nGeoff Emberling is an associate research scientist at the Kelsey Museum and currently directs archaeological research on ancient Kush at Jebel Barkal in northern Sudan.\n\nFAST (Field Archaeology Series on Thursday) Lectures are free and open to the public. This event will take place in Room 125 of the Kelsey Museum’s Newberry Hall. Light refreshments and food will be provided at 5:30 PM\, with the lecture starting at 6:00 PM.\n\nIf you have any questions or concerns regarding accessing this event\, please visit our accessibility page at https://myumi.ch/zwPkd or contact the education office by calling (734) 647-4167. We ask for advance notice as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Penny Stamps Speaker Series - Deepa Butoliya
DESCRIPTION:\n\nDeepa Butoliya is a designer\, researcher\, and educator whose work celebrates human ingenuity and creativity in the face of constraint. Born and raised in India and now based in the United States\, she explores how design practices from around the world—especially those rooted in improvisation\, resilience\, and care—can expand how we think about innovation.\n\nHer ongoing research centers on Jugaad\, a Hindi term meaning “making do with what you have.” More than a practice\, Jugaad represents a mindset of resourcefulness and adaptability. Deepa’s work traces this spirit of everyday creativity across cultures and connects it to movements of resistance and repair. In Detroit\, she co-curated Jugaad in the D: Ingenuity and Resistance in Detroit and Motown Masala\, exhibitions that highlight the city’s vibrant culture of grassroots innovation and collective resilience.\n\nTrained as both an architect and industrial designer\, Butoliya holds degrees from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur and the University of Illinois at Chicago. She has taught at Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Illinois at Chicago\, and has worked with organizations including the Development Lab at MIT and GE Healthcare. Her research and workshops have been presented at international conferences such as IDSA\, Making Futures\, EPIC\, CHI\, IASDR\, and Speculative Futures.\n\nThis project was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan.\n\nSeries presenting partners: Detroit PBS\, ALL ARTS\, and PBS Books. Media partner: Michigan Public.
