SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:MCDB Seminar Series> From NextGen Epi/Proteomics to Molecular Glue Discovery
DESCRIPTION:To illustrate how our technology-driven approach enables us to address fundamental biological questions and translate these insights into therapeutic discoveries\, I will describe three newly developed high-throughput screening (HTS) technologies\, ranging from the elucidation of the underlying molecular mechanisms of transcriptional regulation to single-cell proteomics and molecular glue discovery.\n\nBio: Dr. Heng Zhu is a full professor of pharmacology and molecular sciences and oncology at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. His research focuses on developing high-throughput screening technologies\, including proteome arrays\, VirD arrays\, and a highly multiplexed DAPPL platform to investigate important basic science and translational questions. \n\nDr. Zhu is a pioneer proteomics technologist who co-invented protein microarray technology. Currently\, his team is engaged in understanding the impacts of DNA epigenetic modifications on transcriptional regulation\, characterization of function GWAS SNPs\, and biomarker discovery.\n\nDr. Zhu received his undergraduate degree in chemistry from Peking University in Beijing\, China. He earned his Ph.D. from Clemson University. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in genetics at Yale University. Dr. Zhu joined the Johns Hopkins faculty in 2004.\n\nDr. Zhu's work has been recognized with numerous awards and honors\, including two Chair's Awards from the Gordon Research Conference.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Rackham Drama and Performance Interest Group
DESCRIPTION:The Drama and Performance Interest Group brings together performers from theatre\, dance\, visual art\, and music with scholars from fields as varied as dance studies\, ethnomusicology\, history\, American studies\, literary studies\, art history\, classics\, and anthropology. We foster critical inquiry into the historical\, social\, and political dimensions of global drama and performance. The Drama and Performance Interest group conceives of performance broadly and considers it to be an essential human expression. Last year\, we added ‘critical dance studies’ to our definition of performance. There is no theatre graduate program at U-M\, nor is there a graduate program in critical dance studies\, thus the Interest Group expands beyond current degree programs and departments to create space for cross-departmental\, interdisciplinary collaboration for graduate students interested in drama and performance\, broadly defined.

SUMMARY:Film Screening:T.REX
DESCRIPTION:With stunning CGI visuals and the latest research from leading paleontologists\, the film offers audiences a fresh perspective on the GOAT (Greatest Of All Tyrants): Tyrannosaurus rex. Anchored by the true story of the young fossil hunters who made the discovery of a lifetime when they spotted a large fossilized leg bone on a walk on public lands in North Dakota\, T. REX intercuts the remarkable fossil dig\, with cutting edge computer graphics that bring the iconic T. rex to life—from hatchling to hulking adult. Narrated by Jurassic Park actor Sam Neill\, T. REX explores the newest science that has helped reinvent our understanding of the iconic predator.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Human Odyssey on the Roof of the World: Adaptations and Resilience on the Tibetan Plateau
DESCRIPTION:The Tibetan Plateau—often described as the “Roof of the World”—represents one of the most extreme environments ever inhabited by humans. With an average elevation exceeding 4000 meters\, the region poses formidable challenges including hypoxia\, harsh climate\, and highly variable ecological productivity. Understanding how and when humans successfully adapted to these conditions remains a central question in high-altitude archaeology. This talk synthesizes recent archaeological\, paleoenvironmental\, and genetic research to reassess the long-term history of human occupation on the Tibetan Plateau. Evidence from Paleolithic sites indicates that foraging populations began exploring the plateau margins as early as the Middle Pleistocene\, with increasing evidence for sustained human presence during the Late Pleistocene and early Holocene. Rather than viewing the plateau as permanently settled only after the arrival of agriculture and pastoralism\, new research suggests that indigenous foragers played a crucial role in establishing viable lifeways in high-altitude environments.
