SUMMARY:Performance:Alex Johnson\, carillon (University of Chicago): “Knock Knock\, it’s 1510\, Carillon Time”
DESCRIPTION:Good luck finding the beat in these time-oriented selections across the ages of carillon music – 1510 being the birth year of the carillon. In Arthur Meulemans’ *Toccata*\, downbeat versus upbeat clarity is constantly obscured. In *Aqua*\, breath-based time\, a series of short gestures separated by a duration determined entirely by listening and breathing. Matthias Vanden Gheyn\, the first composer from whom exists written music for a carillonist to perform\, wrote a series of preludes that make very idiomatic use of the different registers of the carillon. The result: near perpetual motion in the treble bells. Next\, flexible time (rubato): Jef Denyn’s *Preludium in D*\, a highly romantic work by the founder of the Royal Carillon School in Belgium\, the world’s first school for carillon. The four movements of Werner Van Cleemput’s *3 Sonneries & 1 Bis* each use a different rhythmic or temporal syntax. The first movement makes delightfully clunky use of gestures and accents that obscure the underlying meter\, the second movement is freer and airier\, the third movement fits very clearly and vigorously into its time signature\, and the finale is a constant accelerando. The final piece\, *Absorptions*\, is seven systems\, seven little worlds into which the performer is to settle and explore before moving on. Each world has a direction\, specific enough for coherence\, vague enough to allow the performer room to explore\, for example: ‘wobbly walking’\, ‘a chord\, very occasionally’\, and ‘turbulent tremolo’. Meditative time.\n\nFree and open to the public\; presented in conjunction with the 2025 U-M Organ Conference: \"Ludus Chronalis: Time\, Cadence\, and Temporality in Keyboard Music and Sacred Spaces.\"\n\nABOUT THE GUEST ARTIST\n\nALEX JOHNSON is the seventh University Carillonist of the University of Chicago. In this role\, he regularly plays the seventy-two bell\, one-hundred ton Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial Carillon for Sunday services\, weddings\, convocations\, and other major university events. He also instructs and advises the twenty members of the UChicago Guild of Carillonists\, a student organization which provides the campus most of its carillon music during the week. Alex serves the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America as chair of the Arrangements & Transcriptions Subcommittee of Music Publications and as a juror for the Johan Franco Composition Committee. Alex has performed across North America\, Europe\, and Australia\, and he is an avid composer\, improviser\, and supporter of new music.\n\nPreviously\, Alex taught high school math in Austin\, Texas\, where he played and taught the carillon informally at the University of Texas. Alex graduated summa cum laude from the Royal Carillon School ‘Jef Denyn’ in Belgium\, and before that he studied in residency as the Carillon Fellow at Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales\, Florida. Alex began his carillon studies at the University of Rochester\, from where he obtained a degree in Physics. During his college years\, he studied gamelan and mbira music at Eastman School of Music\, and he spent a semester abroad studying and playing the carillon in Australia at the University of Sydney. In 2019\, Alex won 1st Prize Overall\, Best Performance of a Work by a Belgian Composer\, and the Improvisation Competition at the 8th iteration of the most prestigious carillon competition\, the International Queen Fabiola Carillon Competition\, held in Mechelen\, Belgium. Besides carillon\, Alex enjoys cooking and spending time with nature\, which\, as a Hyde Park local\, means spending lots of time at the Point.

SUMMARY:Performance:Nigamon/Tunai
DESCRIPTION:In the heart of a forest of sound\, Canadian artist Émilie Monnet and Colombian artist Waira Nina deliver a poetic manifesto inspired by the bonds of friendship and solidarity.\n\nNigamon / Tunai (the words translate to “song” in the Anishinaabemowin and Inga languages) is an immersive performance ritual rooted in the presence of the natural world and co-exists with the audience\, who are in close proximity to the performers on the Power Center stage.\n\nAt the crossroads of friendship and resistance\, the two women invite us to listen deeply and to understand the knowledge and struggles that link their respective cultures: the depletion and plundering of natural resources that are core to their existence.\n\nInterweaving immersive performance and audio documentary with Indigenous knowledge and voices\, this mesmerizing new theatrical work invites audiences into ritualized listening\, and to feel the sound vibrations emitted by the surrounding water\, stones\, copper\, and tree trunks. Linked by the figure of the turtle\, which is central to both of their origin stories\, the two women form an effective alliance advocating for the protection of water\, land\, stars\, and ancestral knowledge.\n\nLooking for free student tickets? All U-M undergraduate students are eligible to receive a FREE ticket to a UMS performance per academic year through the Bert’s Ticket program (a $20 value)!

SUMMARY:Film Screening:2025 Halaloween: A Muslim Horror Film Festival

Halaloween screens horror films from across the globe that were made by\, for\, or about Muslims\, to understand: “What scares Muslim audiences? Are horror movies halal?”\n\nThis year’s 2025 film festival runs throughout October on Tuesdays. Halaloween will showcase one film streaming online from October 1-15\; a montage of short films in-person at the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn on Tuesday\, October 14 at 7pm\; and two in-person screenings at the State Theatre\, on Tuesday October 21 and 28 at 7pm.\n\nThe festival is free in-person and online–but make sure to reserve tickets! In-person screenings will be first-come\, first-served with RSVPs strongly encouraged.\n\nWe are inclusive of everyone's film needs: from new horror fans who close their eyes through most scary movies\, to those who love the gore–we've got films for everyone! Check the Halaloween Horror Rating in the description of each film for its scariness rating and other details.\n\n\nThe 2025 Halaloween Lineup:\n\nOctober 1-15: Xoftex | Greece/Palestine/Syria | 2024 | Online Screening\nOctober 14: Short Films | Saudi Arabia\, Syria\, Mauritania\, Morocco\, Tunisia | 7:00pm | Arab American National Museum (Dearborn) \nOctober 21: Agora | Tunisia | 2024 | 7:00 PM | State Theatre\nOctober 28: Algiers | Algeria | 2024 | 7:00 PM | State Theatre\n\nRSVP & stream our online selection: https://watch.eventive.org/halaloween\n\n\nSTREAM ONLINE FROM OCTOBER 1-15\nXOFTEX | 2024 | 99 mins | Directed by Noez Deshe\n\nPalestinian-Syrian teenager Nasser and his older brother Yassin have been living in a Greek refugee camp\, awaiting a decision on their asylum application. They pass the time recording comedy sketches and fantasizing about making zombie films and moving to Sweden. Nasser\, however\, feels increasingly trapped in this No Man’s Land. With nowhere to escape\, boiling tensions in the camp push Nasser to another reality. Highly experimental filmmaking.\n\nDirector Noaz Deshe works as a director and musician. He composed the soundtrack of Babak Jalali’s FRONTIER BLUES (2009)\, and was the cinematographer of the Tiger winner RADIO DREAMS (2016). His debut feature film WHITE SHADOW (2013) about a young albino person won the Lion of the Future Award at Venice Film Festival and was showcased at Sundance Film Festival. XOFTEX (2024) is his second feature film\, selected for FilmFest München. In addition to his artistic work\, he has worked as a volunteer on sea rescue missions and in refugee camps.\n\nHalaloween Horror Rating: 2/5 Pumpkins \n\nRating explanation: Not very scary\, but eerie\, experimental\, and suspenseful. Purposefully experimental to capture the difficulty of being in a refugee camp. Content warnings: drowning death\, monsters\, zombie references\, refugee camps\, hunger\, and fleeing war. Religious content: Islamic prayer.\n\n\n----\n\nHalaloween: A Muslim Horror Film Festival\, is brought to you by the Global Islamic Studies Center and cosponsored by the Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies\, the Digital Islamic Studies Curriculum\, & the Middle Eastern Studies Department.
