SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Center for Emerging Democracies Roundtable | Unequal Democracies
DESCRIPTION:Chair: Dan Slater\, James Orin Murfin Professor of Political Science Director\, Center for Emerging Democracies\, University of Michigan\n\nSpeakers: Noam Lupu\, Professor/ Associate Director\, Latin American Public Opinion Project (LAPOP)\,Vanderbilt University\nCharlotte Cavaille\, Assistant Professor of Public Policy\, Ford School of Public Policy\, University of Michigan\n\nRespondent: Vincent Mauro\, Center for Emerging Democracies Postdoctoral Fellow\, University of Michigan\n\nAttend in person or attend via Zoom. Zoom registration at https://myumi.ch/ErA81\n\n Inequality has long been theorized to be a scourge on the vitality of democratic societies. Beyond rising levels of economic inequalities recently experienced by many countries\, there exist many deep-rooted political and social inequalities that may undermine democratic politics or aid political entrepreneurs leading undemocratic movements to capitalize upon. This roundtable introduces a recently edited volume\, Unequal Democracies\, that helps untangle the complex relationship between contemporary democracies and inequality along a variety of economic\, political\, and social dimensions.\n \nPlease be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar |Ultrafast nano-imaging: Probing quantum dynamics in space and time
DESCRIPTION:Understanding and ultimately controlling the properties of quantum materials and their coupled degrees of freedom will require counteracting the effects of dissipation and dephasing. This necessitates imaging the elementary excitations on their natural time and length scales. To achieve this goal\, we developed scanning probe microscopies with ultrafast and shaped laser pulses for multiscale coherent spatio-temporal optical nano-imaging. In corresponding ultrafast movies\, we resolve the fundamental quantum dynamics down to the few-femtosecond regime with nanometer spatial resolution. \n \nSpecifically\, in 2D materials and their heterostructures\, the emergent electronic\, spin\, and other quantum properties are controlled by the underlying interlayer coupling and associated charge and energy transfer dynamics. These processes are sensitive to interlayer distance and crystallographic orientation\, which are in turn affected by defects\, grain boundaries\, and other nanoscale heterogeneities. In this talk\, I will present the use of adiabatic plasmonic nanofocused four-wave mixing (FWM) [1] to image the coherent electron dynamics in monolayer WSe2 resolving nanoscale heterogeneities in dephasing ranging from T2 < 5 fs to T2 > 60 fs on length scales of 50-100 nm [2]. Further\, in combination with Purcell-enhanced nano-cavity clock spectroscopy [3] in WSe2/graphene heterostructures we identify interlayer energy transfer dynamics at times scales of 350 fs [4]. Beyond the fundamental understanding to the competition between intrinsic and extrinsic effects on excitation lifetimes and coherence\, we discover a new regime of nonlinear nano-optics at the interplay of spatial coherence and disorder-induced scattering. \n\nReferences\n[1] T. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Colloquium Seminar: From Calabi-Yau manifolds\, to optimal transport and free-boundaries.
DESCRIPTION:Calabi-Yau manifolds are fundamental objects in geometric analysis and theoretical physics. I will discuss some recent progress concerning the construction of new\, non-compact Calabi-Yau manifolds. In particular\, I will highlight connections to questions in nonlinear partial differential equations including optimal transportation and free boundary problems. Based on joint works with Y. Li\, and F. Tong and S.-T. Yau.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:DAAS Africa Workshop: “Delivery as Dispossession: Land Occupation and Eviction in the Postapartheid City.”
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nMy recent book Delivery as Dispossession explains why nearly 30 years after the end of apartheid\, the South African government continues to evict squatters from urban land. It argues that housing officials view occupations as threats to the government’s housing delivery program\, which\, they insist\, requires order and state control. New occupations are therefore stigmatized as “disorderly” threats\, and government actors represent their removal as a precondition for access to housing. Drawing on a decade of sustained ethnographic fieldwork in two such occupations in Cape Town\, this study explains why one was evicted\, whereas the other was ultimately tolerated\, answering a central question in urban studies: how do governments decide when to evict\, and conversely\, when to tolerate? These decisions are not made in a vacuum but instead require an analysis that expands what we typically call “the state.” This book argues that the state does not simply “see” occupations\, as if they were a feature of the natural landscape. Rather\, occupiers collectively project themselves to government actors\, affecting how they are seen. But residents are not only seen\; they also see\, which shapes how they organize themselves. When residents see the state as an antagonist\, they tend to unify under a single leadership\; but when they see it as a potential ally\, they often remain atomized as if they were individual customers. The unity in the former case projects an orderly population\, less likely to be evicted\; but the fragmentation in the latter case projects a disorderly mass\, serving to legitimate eviction rulings.\n\nBio:\nZachary Levenson is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Florida International University and a Senior Research Associate in Sociology at the University of Johannesburg. He is the author of Delivery as Dispossession: Land Occupation and Eviction in the Postapartheid City (Oxford University Press\, 2022) and the co-editor of The South African African Tradition of Racial Capitalism (Routledge\, 2024). He is currently working on his next book\, which considers political diversity within the anti-apartheid movement.
