SUMMARY:Presentation:2024 Helmut W. Baer Lecture | When a Symmetry Breaks
DESCRIPTION:This will be a hybrid event. Livestream Link: https://youtu.be/gYRV6uM1fOU\n\nWhat is common among a magnet\, a flounder\, a rack of laundry\, your heart on the left of your body\, and the Higgs boson? The concept of spontaneous symmetry breaking is ubiquitous among many natural phenomena. I'll describe the basic concept and its applications. In particular\, the original concepts from Anderson\, Nambu\, Goldstone\, and Higgs do not quite work in many systems that include a magnet on your fridge. I generalize the concept so that it is applicable to all known natural phenomena around us.\n\nPlease join us for a reception outside of 340 West Hall from 2:00-3:00 pm prior to the lecture.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Learning Seminar in Algebraic Combinatorics: Bergman fans and their subdivisions
DESCRIPTION:In this talk we first introduce another way of constructing new matroids from a given one M\, by minimizing the linear functional w \cdot x over x in the matroid polytope of M\, for a fixed w in R^n. We then use this to define the Bergman fan of a given matroid\, which are spaces of weights w whose corresponding matroids do not contain loops. To understand the topology of the Bergman fan\, we introduce a combinatorial gadget called phylogenetic trees which can be used to parametrize the Bergman fan\, and give a nice subdivision of it.
