SUMMARY:Exhibition:Up\, Up\, And Away: A History of Ballooning in America
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit examines the history of balloon flight in the United States from Blanchard’s first ascension to the early twentieth century. In the age of bird’s-eye views\, which imagined a perspective on American cities and towns from high in the air\, balloonists were the only people who actually had the opportunity to see what the growing nation looked like from above. As the nineteenth century progressed\, ballooning became a lucrative (if dangerous) business\, as crowds gathered to watch balloons launch\, and to see aeronauts risk their lives high in the air. Over time\, the image of the hot air balloon proliferated in American print culture\, being used to sell goods ranging from thread to canned beef. We hope that this exhibit conveys some of the thrill that would have come from seeing people fly for the first time.\n\nOn view May 22-August 28\, weekdays from 12-4 pm.

SUMMARY:Performance:Summer Carillon Concert Series: U-M Students
DESCRIPTION:Summer carillon concerts are free and open to all\, including to families and their pets. The music happens rain or shine. This season\, all concerts are scheduled at Lurie Tower. When you arrive\, take a program from the stand near the tower and have a seat outdoors wherever you like\, or bring your own lawn chair or blanket (even your own picnic!). Concert staff wearing nametags will be available to answer questions or direct you to accessible restrooms and other facilities. For best acoustics\, sit far enough away from the tower to have a direct line of sight to the bells.\n\nThis performance features graduate student Austin Zhu and additional performers TBA.\n\nMetered visitor parking is available behind the Walgreen Drama Center. Additional street parking along Bonisteel Blvd. is available after business hours\, and metered visitor parking is available by the E.V. Moore Building (lot NC10)\, the North Campus Recreation Building (lot NC44)\, and the Art & Architecture Building (lot NC43).

DESCRIPTION:The UMS Choral Union invites you to take part in the return of Summer Sings. Just come as you are to this no-audition\, no-performance evening of memorable music-making!\n\nAs many as 250 singers from southeastern Michigan\, northern Ohio\, and Canada have joined each session in singing through great choral repertoire with some of the nation’s most respected choral conductors and outstanding soloists. We rehearse portions of the score during the first half\, break for refreshments\, and then re-convene to sing through the entire work.\n\nPlease arrive early at 6:30 pm for registration.
