SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:QuantUM & Society of Physics Students Joint Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Join QuantUM and SPS for our first ever combined event! Dr. Liuyan Zhao will speak on her research in Quantum Materials. The event is open to all and no background experience is required. Food will be served starting at 5:30 and the talk will begin at 6:00 in West Hall 411.\n\nIn recent years\, we frequently hear about the term \"quantum materials\"\, and perhaps\, wonder about the definition and the manifestation of quantum materials. At the same time\, we are often curious about how we can access the quantum aspect of quantum materials\, as sometimes they are hidden to conventional and classical experimental probes. In this talk\, we will start with an overview of quantum materials\, and then\, we will go through several cases to show our group's effort in studying and designing quantum materials.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Digging Deeper and FAST Lecture | Reassessing Agriculture\, Diet\, and (Mal)Nutrition at Greco-Roman Karanis: New Insights from the AGROS Project
DESCRIPTION:This lecture provides an overview of some of the recent results from diverse chemical analyses on the Karanis archaeobotanical collection at the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology in the context of the AGROS project— “Agriculture\, Diet and Nutrition in Greco-Roman Egypt. Reassessing Ancient Sustenance\, Food Processing and (Mal)Nutrition”—funded by the Belgian Excellence of Science program. \n\nThe lecture aims to illustrate the value and potential of these chemical approaches by focusing on three brief case studies from the AGROS project. The first shows how plant stable isotope analysis can help us model agricultural practices (such as manuring and irrigation) and reconstruct environmental conditions at Karanis. The second case study provides insights into what we can learn from the differences between the (anti)nutritional properties of modern and ancient crops following analyses of the Karanis collection. Lastly\, the third case study focuses on the project’s interdisciplinary efforts to recreate and nutritionally assess ancient recipes\, food processing practices\, and foodstuffs. Throughout the presentation\, we will also consider the potential for the modern application of the project’s results. \n\nFrits Heinrich is assistant professor of ancient\, agricultural\, and food history at the research groups Interdisciplinary Historical Food Studies (FOST) and Industrial Microbiology and Food Biotechnology (IMDO) at the Vrije Universiteit Brussels (VUB). He is also the assistant director and creator of the AGROS project. \n\n“Reassessing Agriculture\, Diet\, and (Mal)Nutrition at Greco-Roman Karanis” is co-sponsored by the Kelsey Museum’s Digging Deeper: Thursday Night Lecture Series and FAST (Field Archaeology Series on Thursday) program. Please join us in the Kelsey Museum’s Newberry Hall classrooms. Light refreshments will be provided before the lecture\, which will begin at 6 PM.\n\nThis event is free and open to all visitors. If you have any questions or concerns regarding accessing this event\, please visit our accessibility page at https://myumi.ch/zwPkd or contact the education office by calling (734) 647-4167. We ask for advance notice as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Foundations of Community Engagement
DESCRIPTION:Foundations of Community Engagement is an interactive workshop that introduces principles and practices of equitable\, ethical community engagement. Participants will develop a deeper understanding of what the term “community engagement” means\, as well as the many forms it might take - from research and course-based projects to philanthropy\, activism\, policy\, and direct service. Across all these forms of engagement\, participants will learn concepts and actions that promote equitable partnerships\, center community-defined priorities\, and disrupt entrenched power dynamics between universities and community members. Participants will also discuss real-world community engagement scenarios that ask them to apply what they’ve learned in the workshop to various situations.\n\n**This workshop is an updated version of Ginsberg’s long-standing Entering\, Engaging\, and Exiting (E3) session. If you’ve attended that session in the past\, you’ll gain additional knowledge from this session.**\n\nRegister for a Session Here: https://sessions.studentlife.umich.edu/track/event/16509

SUMMARY:Presentation:Celestial Heritage: Latin America's Skies and Women in Astronomy
DESCRIPTION:The Judy & Stanley Frankel Detroit Observatory is excited to host U-M Astronomy's Professor Nuria Calvet and Professor Mario Mateo for two wonderful talks on Latin American astronomers and observatories. The talks will begin at 7:00 PM and will last 1 hour in total. Afterwards\, attendees will be welcome to tour the original 1854 Detroit Observatory and observe the night sky through its historic telescope.\n\nLos Ojos sobre el Cielo: Latin American Astronomical Facilities from Ancient times to the Modern World - Professor Mario Mateo\nI will provide a whirlwind tour of Latin American Astronomical Facilities that span the eras of pre-Columbian meso-American cultures\, to the present time. The more ancient sites were used by ancient societies to gauge the passage of time to remarkable accuracy. More modern astronomical centers in Latin America provided some of the key insights on the immense scale of our Universe while exploring some of the many cosmic structures best studied from the Southern Hemisphere. Modern facilities continue to build on this legacy through Latin American astronomical facilities--many among the finest in the world--to carry out detailed explorations of a wide range of exotic cosmic phenomena revealed by modern astrophysical studies.\n\nReflections on Life Lessons with a Latina Astronomer - Professor Nuria Calvet\nMany years ago\, I became a physicist with a major in astronomy in Latin America. In my long career as a female astronomer in both Latin America and the U.S.\, I have witnessed many changes and significant growth. In my talk\, I will tell you about the pioneering female astronomers in Argentina\, Brasil\, Mexico\, Venezuela and other countries in Latin America\, “las astrónomas” many of whom were my mentors and friends. I will share how they helped create strong communities in their countries where young women felt that astronomy was for everyone and believed they could do beautiful science. Today\, there are so many astrónomas that it is difficult to name them all\, but I will try to give you a glimpse into their successes.\n\nTelescope observing is weather dependent. Registration is required.
