SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Affirmative Action and Racial Integration
DESCRIPTION:CID Speaker Series\n\nJoin the Stone Center for Inequality Dynamics as we host Zachary Bleemer\, assistant professor of economics in Princeton University’s Industrial Relations Section. This event is jointly presented with U-M Economics – Labor Economics Seminar.\n\nAbstract: Does exposure to diverse college peers cause long-run racial integration? The study examines California Proposition 209\, which halved Black and Hispanic enrollment at many undergraduate and graduate University of California schools and improved cross-race academic match at others. Combining time-series and difference-in-differences designs with linked administrative data\, survey responses\, and complementary evidence from the UC Berkeley freshman housing lottery\, it assesses how affirmative action and interracial contact affect later-life social\, political\, and economic integration.\n\nZach Bleemer is an assistant professor of economics at Princeton University in the Industrial Relations Section and a faculty research fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He is a labor economist who studies American higher education.\n\nPlease RSVP via the event page to save your seat.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Knowing the Numbers: Performance Data and Microenterprise Outcomes in Uganda
DESCRIPTION:Can increasing business owners’ knowledge of their enterprise performance improve firm outcomes? We explore this question through a randomized controlled trial (RCT) with retail businesses in Kampala\, Uganda. Firms were randomly assigned to one of three groups: (1) control\, (2) record-keeping encouragement\, or (3) record-keeping plus fortnightly business analytics (the ``Performance Report'')---simple summaries of key business metrics over time. After one year of these interventions\, we find that receiving the Performance Report leads to substantial increases in profits\, sales and the value of inventory alongside improvements in the accuracy of owners' knowledge of their own sales\, inventory management and the quality of record-keeping. In contrast\, encouraging record-keeping alone has no measurable effect\, suggesting that merely keeping records is not sufficient to improve business outcomes. Our findings indicate that efforts to support microenterprises should move beyond record-keeping training and provide tools to enable business owners to understand and monitor their business performance over time.
