SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Webinar: Habitat Heartbeats: Listening to What Oysters and Mussels Can Tell Us about Southern California Estuaries
DESCRIPTION:Southern California’s estuaries can experience large swings in water quality due to events like freshwater inflow\, sewage spills\, and estuary mouth closures. The Tijuana River NERR (TRNERR) monitors several estuaries in San Diego County to better understand how biological communities respond to changes in water quality. Through an iterative process with TRNERR and other users\, this project team co-developed a biosensor monitoring system that uses shellfish (oysters and mussels) as biosentinels. Alongside state and local land managers and other wetland and aquaculture professionals\, the team designed an open-source electronic sensor that attaches to shellfish and monitors gaping behavior and heart rate. These metrics that can be used as indicators of physiological stress in response to environmental changes.\n\nIn this webinar\, the project team will describe their collaborative process within the team and with additional potential end users. Potential users included resource managers\, aquaculture practitioners\, and research biologists working with these bivalves in other settings. The team will describe the basic components of the biosensor equipment and approaches used in the field and lab for gathering and analyzing data. Data from the focal estuaries will be used to illustrate individual and group responses of the biosentinel bivalves to rapidly-shifting water quality conditions.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Algebraic Geometry Seminar: Stability and Moduli on Kuznetsov Components of Cubic 5-Folds
DESCRIPTION:Bridgeland stability is notoriously hard to construct on varieties of dimension > 2. One promising workaround is to focus on the Kuznetsov component of Fano varieties — a residual piece of the derived category that often captures the essential geometric information. In this talk\, I will explain the construction of stability conditions on Kuznetsov components using the machinery of quadric fibrations introduced by Bayer–Lahoz–Macrì–Stellari. I will illustrate how this technique applies to cubic 5-folds as a new higher-dimensional example. In the second part\, I will then describe properties of the associated moduli spaces. In particular\, they admit immersions into hyper-Kähler varieties with Lagrangian image\, generalizing a geometric construction of Illiev–Manivel.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Macroscopic market making
DESCRIPTION:Trade execution and market making are two central problems in algorithmic trading that have largely been studied in separate literatures. In this talk\, I present a unified approach that addresses both problems simultaneously in three steps.\n\nWe introduce a macroscopic market making model à la Avellaneda-Stoikov\, using continuous processes for orders instead of discrete point processes. Since the impact of a single market maker on price is typically negligible\, we then develop the corresponding game formulation. Finally\, we can connect traders with market makers.\n \nSubsequently\, we present our mathematical contributions. The goal is to derive the global well‑posedness of the optimal control/Nash equilibrium. The discussion addresses topics in game theory\, non‑smooth analysis\, FBSDEs\, and Riccati equations.\n\nReferences:\nIvan Guo\, Shijia Jin\, and Kihun Nam\, Macroscopic Market Making. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Probability/Analysis Circle: Harmonic Functions and Random Walks
DESCRIPTION:Harmonic functions are classical objects in analysis\, the same is true for random walks in probability. We plan to discuss basics links between the two notions.
