SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MIPSE Seminar | Xcimer’s Approach to Inertial Fusion Energy
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nXcimer Energy Corporation is developing a new generation of large‑scale\, high‑efficiency excimer laser systems designed to enable practical inertial fusion energy. This talk will outline the physics and engineering foundations of high‑energy KrF laser architectures and their advantages for coupling energy to direct‑drive fusion targets. This presentation will describe Xcimer’s integrated roadmap for de‑risking and scaling the technology. These strategies include the Phoenix program to demonstrate and validate gas optics performance\; Anvil\, Xcimer’s first dedicated target‑shooter facility to derisk two beam implosion\; and Vulcan\, a 4‑MJ‑class laser system intended to demonstrate fusion breakeven. The seminar will also introduce Athena\, a conceptual fusion pilot plant featuring a liquid first wall designed for a 40‑year lifetime and compatible with high‑repetition‑rate operation. Together\, these developments form a coherent pathway towards high‑gain direct‑drive targets and commercially relevant fusion energy systems. The talk will highlight the system‑level considerations that motivate excimer technology\, the target‑design implications of higher available laser energy\, and the engineering concessions required for a viable fusion power plant.\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nAlison Christopherson is the Head of Target Design at Xcimer Energy Corp. where she leads the development of high‑gain direct‑drive targets for next‑generation excimer‑laser–driven inertial fusion energy systems. She earned her B.S. in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Michigan and her Ph.D. from the University of Rochester\, specializing in direct‑drive inertial confinement fusion. Her doctoral work advanced understanding of alpha particle heating and ignition\, earning her the Rosenbluth Award for excellence in plasma physics. She went on to serve as a staff scientist in the Inertial Confinement Fusion program at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory during the period when ignition was first achieved. Her experience at LLNL reinforced a key conclusion: solid‑state laser architectures face fundamental scaling limits for the energy levels required to produce robust\, high‑gain targets and to accommodate the engineering concessions of a fusion power plant. Motivated by the promise of gas‑optics–based excimer technology\, she joined Xcimer to lead its target design program and shape the physics basis for the company’s fusion roadmap.\n\nThe seminar will be conducted in person\, with livestream on Zoom. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Optimal Contract\, Delegated Investment\, and Information Acquisition
DESCRIPTION:We study a model of delegated investment within a noisy rational expectations equilibrium framework. Portfolio managers can acquire costly private information about asset payoffs but incur portfolio management costs\, and are compensated by investors to make investment decisions on their behalf. We show that the optimal contract features a benchmark component that mitigates the agency frictions arising from portfolio management costs. The precision of managers' private information is determined endogenously in market equilibrium\, with private and public information acting as substitutes. As portfolio management costs increase\, both the performance-based and benchmark components of the optimal contract become more sensitive to investment outcomes\, while fewer private signals are incorporated into prices\, reducing market informational efficiency. We further show that when a social planner places sufficient weight on the welfare of direct investors and liquidity providers\, the socially optimal equilibrium achieves greater price informational efficiency than the decentralized equilibrium. The talk will focus on the interaction between optimal contracting\, information acquisition\, and market efficiency\, together with the economic intuition underlying these results.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Probability and Analysis Seminar: Non-abelian Hirota–Miwa Equations for the KPZ Universality Class
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The KPZ universality class is a broad collection of mathematical and physical models linked through their shared universal scaling behavior. A privileged subset\, known as exactly solvable models\, possess algebraic structure that allows for exact formulas for their probability distributions.\n\nFor an even smaller subset of these models\, their distributions have been shown to satisfy nonlinear equations from classical integrable systems\, including Painlevé\, KP\, and Toda equations. Why should equations from soliton theory appear in random growth\, and why do they keep reappearing across different models?\n\nI will describe a framework that gives a common algebraic explanation and extends this connection to eighteen exactly solvable models. The framework organizes the Fredholm determinant formulas of solvable KPZ models into an overdetermined linear problem whose compatibility conditions reveal a discrete integrable structure gauge equivalent to the non-abelian Hirota–Miwa equation.

DESCRIPTION:Engendering Respectful Communities (ERC) is a one session workshop that engages graduate students in meaningful dialogue about various forms of sexual misconduct they may encounter in both professional and social spaces\, and provides resources for intervention or support in such circumstances.The primary goal of the workshop is to address complexities experienced by graduate students as they engage in bystander intervention\, so that participants gain an increase in awareness of barriers to action and familiarity with strategic planning to overcome them. The workshop also introduces participants to on-campus resources and provides knowledge on how sexual misconduct can unfold in graduate-specific settings.The ERC workshop uses small-group circles intended to promote active reflection and space to build community. The procedure of circles is introduced at the beginning of the workshop in order to help participants get used to the process\, which they do through a circle for introductions and value-sharing for the workshop space. These circles depict various\, realistic scenarios related to sexual misconduct within the graduate community. The circle process allows circle members to process the monologues\, reflect on complexities with identity and power dynamics within them\, name potential barriers to intervention\, and think of various ways in which they might respond if faced with similar situations. The circles provide a way to foster collective building of ideas\, where participants learn from one another and all input is equally valued. Participants are encouraged to share but can always pass if desired\, creating an environment where participation is open but not forced. Due to the participatory nature of the workshop\, if you are to arrive more than 20 minutes late\, we will ask you to re-register for another workshop session.If you have any questions about or concerns with taking this workshop\, or are in need of an exemption\, please contact jhippe@umich.edu or fill out this form. We know some students come to campus having already experienced harm. If you have circumstances that make completing this course challenging\, please reach out to the GROWE team.
