SUMMARY:Exhibition:“Who Counts? A History of Voting in America”
DESCRIPTION:Changes over the course of the nineteenth century in how Americans voted\, from voice vote to public ballot box to private voting booth\, also saw changes in the material culture that surrounded voting. Ballots and ballot boxes\, campaign pins and ribbons\, blank lists and pre-printed party tickets\, lanterns and banners–the creative forces of the American print industry filled the country’s cities and small towns with the ephemera of electioneering.\n\nAs you look at the items in this exhibit\, think about what they tell us about how Americans in the past felt about voting\, and about how voting felt. How did Election Days feel when they were full of parades and music and public drinking? What was it like to vote when everyone around you knew who you voted for? And\, most of all\, who counted as a voter\, and who did the counting?\n\nOn view September 11-December 22\, weekdays from 12-4 pm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Cosmo Whyte: Under the Quiet\, Beyond the Eye
DESCRIPTION:\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\n\nStamps Gallery kicks off the fall 2026 semester with an ambitious mid-career survey of interdisciplinary artist Cosmo Whyte. Born and raised in Jamaica\, Whyte completed a BFA from Bennington College and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan. He is currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architecture\, UCLA.\n\nThis exhibition brings together two central concerns that animate Whyte’s artistic practice: the archive\, both personal and public\, as a site of disturbance\; and migration as a lived experience of refuge\, refusal\, and reinvention. In Whyte’s work\, the archive is never static or neutral. Rather\, it is a contested space where official histories encounter memory\, inheritance\, and the fragments of stories carried across generations. His practice moves within this charged interstitial terrain\, between what has been recorded and what has been remembered\, between institutional knowledge and embodied experience. Whyte invites the viewer to consider the fluidity of geographic borders and layered cultural identities that have persisted despite societal unrest caused by racial and socio-economic hierarchies across generations. In an era of intensified border politics and renewed debates over national identity\, Whyte’s work offers a timely meditation on memory\, movement\, and belonging.\n\nPresented with support from the U-M Institute for Humanities\, the U-M LSA Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\, and the U-M Library.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Flash Talk | Fragments from the *Iliad* from Oxyrhynchus
DESCRIPTION:At the archaeological site of Oxyrhynchus\, Egypt\, researchers discovered a 2\,000-year-old mummified individual with a sealed papyrus packet containing verses from Book 2 of Homer’s *Iliad*. Dr. Leah Mascia coordinated the collaborative effort to conserve\, identify\, and interpret the heavily degraded text\, revealing the first known example of a literary work serving a functional role in Egyptian mummification. Her analysis of the packet’s seals and folding patterns shows how Greek and Egyptian traditions converged under Roman rule—raising questions about whether Homeric poetry offered the deceased protection\, affirmed cultural identity and status\, or helped guide the journey into the afterlife.\n\nDr. Leah Mascia is a postdoctoral researcher at the Egyptological Seminar of the Freie Universität Berlin and former head of Research Field B “Inscribing Spaces” at the Cluster of Excellence “Understanding Written Artefacts\,” Centre for the Study of Manuscript Cultures\, Universität Hamburg.\n\nKelsey Museum Flash Talks are 15-minute Zoom lectures by curators\, staff members\, researchers\, graduate students\, and guests talking about their recent research or current projects. Each presentation is followed by 15 minutes of Q&A. Flash Talks are free and open to all visitors.\n\nTo register for this lecture\, fill out the form at https://forms.gle/YPAoZjPboAb13BmY9. Zoom log-in information will be provided upon registration. Please sign up by 9:30 AM the day of the event to ensure you receive a confirmation email containing the access code.
