SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Brown Bag Seminar | Generalized Global Symmetries and Nonperturbative Quantum Flavodynamics
DESCRIPTION:Generalized global symmetries are present in theories of particle physics\, and understanding their structure can give insight into these theories and UV completions thereof.  We will identify noninvertible chiral symmetries in certain flavorful Z' extensions of the Standard Model\, and our understanding of generalized symmetry breaking will lead us to short-distance theories of gauged non-Abelian flavor where nonperturbative effects can resolve important naturalness questions. For the leptons we will find naturally exponentially small Dirac neutrino masses\, and in the quark sector we will construct a massless down-type quarks solution to strong CP in color-flavor unification. Intriguingly\, the fact that we have three generations of fermions plays a crucial role in the existence of these noninvertible symmetries.

SUMMARY:Performance:Tiffany Ng\, carillon
DESCRIPTION:University Carillonist Tiffany Ng performs on the Charles Baird Carillon\, an instrument of 53 bronze bells located inside the Burton Memorial Tower. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8)\, and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Earplugs are available from the carillonist upon request. Be prepared to walk on ice and snow in the bell chamber during winter. Built in 1936\, the Charles Baird Carillon is not ADA accessible. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Interdisciplinary QC-CM Seminar | Electron-Crystal Geometry Interactions in Quantum Correlated Electron Materials
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, I will introduce correlated electron quantum materials\, why they are gaining interest\, and their current and future applications\, from quantum computing and microelectronics\, to smart window coatings. These materials are characterized by  local\, quantized degrees of freedom (spin\, charge order\, orbital polarization) which give rise to emergent phenomena such as superconductivity\, magnetism\, metal-insulator transitions.\n\nTraditionally\, the study of this class of materials has been focused transition metal oxides\, and the d-orbital states on the transition metal ion\, following the discovery of superconductivity in cuprates\, with a more recent focus on moire systems.\n\nI will describe - based on computational and theoretical tools - how the interaction between local crystal structure motifs and electronic properties influences the formation of novel quantum states with various geometries. This relationship determines not just which quantum states are possible\, but also in some cases which materials are stable. Examples will include a range of materials\, from oxide compounds to Kagome halides. Additionally\, I will demonstrate how techniques originally developed for studying quantum materials can be applied more broadly\, such as in the case of photoluminescent Bismuth oxyhalide materials.\n\nFinally\, I will show how machine learning can be used to assist at all steps of discovery of quantum materials\, from their identification to proposed synthesis pathways.
