SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | The ZEUS Petawatt Laser Facility and High Field Science Research at Michigan
DESCRIPTION:The Zettawatt Equivalent Ultrashort pulse laser System (ZEUS) is a National Science Foundation-funded user facility located in the Gerard Mourou Center for Ultrafast Optical Science (CUOS) at Michigan. The laser will be capable of producing 3-Petawatt pulses and can also be split to create synchronized 2.5-PW and 0.5-PW pulses. This presentation will describe the different capabilities of the facility available to users in each of the three target areas and the current laser operations as well as recent results on laser wakefield acceleration and x-ray generation.

SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs:Internship Lab
DESCRIPTION:*RSVP required to attend. Click \"Join Event\" here: https://umich.joinhandshake.com/events/1573767/share_preview \n\nAre you ready to start searching for a great internship? Do you have a few ideas\, but you’re not sure where to get started? Let's talk about search strategy!! Get real-time\, personalized support by checking out the in person Internship Lab. You’ll be guided by one of our Career Coaches whohas designed this experience to provide you strategies\, tools\, and motivation to get on the right track with searching for internships. Chat with folks from the University Career Center to explore Handshake\, the University Career Alumni Network (UCAN) and to learn about other tools you can use to build a great job/internship search strategy. **If you're not sure what you're interested in\, consider making an \"Exploring Major/Career Option\" appointment to get started clarifying your interests with a career coach in a 1-on-1 setting. Recent Grads: If you are an alumni\, you will not be able to access the link due the University’s policy of discontinuing alumni Zoom accounts 30 days after graduation. Please contact careercenter@umich.edu with the subject line “Recent Grad Help” to receive either a recording of the session orto be set up with a 1:1. Include the name of the workshop/event in your email.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Learning Seminar in Algebraic Combinatorics: Hyperplane arrangements
DESCRIPTION:As David Speyer discussed last week\, hyperplane arrangements were a major motivation for the study of matroids. In this talk\, we’ll take a more in-depth look at hyperplane arrangements with a focus on their characteristic polynomials. While initially defined in terms the point count over F_q\, the characteristic polynomial can be computed entirely combinatorially from the intersection poset. Moreover\, in certain situations\, the characteristic polynomial has a physical interpretation\; over R\, it gives the number of connected components and\, over C\, it gives the Betti numbers. This talk will highlight these results and some of the techniques used to prove them.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Rep Stability/Comm Alg Seminar: Stability in resolutions using local cohomology
DESCRIPTION:Murai observed an interesting stability pattern in the resolutions of symmetric monomial ideals. I will explain my preliminary attempt at providing a structural explanation to Murai's results by proving finiteness theorems for their local cohomology modules. Along the way\, I will also prove the Le--Nagel--Nguyen--Römer conjectures for sequences of GL_n-equivariant k[x_1\, x_2\, ...\, x_n]-modules when k is an infinite field of characteristic p > 0.
