SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AI Clinic Lab | Productionizing Agentic Workflows: Supervised AI Agents That Actually Ship (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:Most agent demos fail in production for the same reason: they’re given autonomy before they’ve earned trust. This session is a practitioner’s look at how a growth agency serving legal\, healthcare and professional-services firms runs AI agents in daily operations\, and why “draft and propose\, humans approve” beats “fully autonomous.” We’ll walk through the real stack: Hermes-based agents with local and cloud models\; a shared company “brain” that gives every agent the same curated context and keeps live systems authoritative\; and a coordination board where agents hand off bounded tasks and flag decisions that belong to a person. You’ll see the guardrails that make it safe: approval gates on anything client-facing\, per-agent credentials scoped to a human owner\, and reviewed pull requests for every change to shared knowledge. Attendees leave with a practical blueprint for deciding what to automate\, what to gate\, and how to expand agent scope without losing control.

SUMMARY:Performance: Austin Zhu\, carillon
DESCRIPTION:Economics graduate student Austin Zhu performs on the Charles Baird Carillon\, an instrument of 53 bronze bells located inside the Burton Memorial Tower. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8)\, and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Hearing protection earmuffs are provided for visitors. Be prepared to walk on ice and snow in the bell chamber during winter. Built in 1936\, the Charles Baird Carillon is not ADA accessible. Visitors with mobility concerns are invited to visit the Lurie Carillon.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:“Who Counts? A History of Voting in America”
DESCRIPTION:Changes over the course of the nineteenth century in how Americans voted\, from voice vote to public ballot box to private voting booth\, also saw changes in the material culture that surrounded voting. Ballots and ballot boxes\, campaign pins and ribbons\, blank lists and pre-printed party tickets\, lanterns and banners–the creative forces of the American print industry filled the country’s cities and small towns with the ephemera of electioneering.\n\nAs you look at the items in this exhibit\, think about what they tell us about how Americans in the past felt about voting\, and about how voting felt. How did Election Days feel when they were full of parades and music and public drinking? What was it like to vote when everyone around you knew who you voted for? And\, most of all\, who counted as a voter\, and who did the counting?\n\nOn view September 11-December 22\, weekdays from 12-4 pm.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Applied Physics | Frontiers for the Dynamical Cores of Weather and Climate Models
DESCRIPTION:Atmospheric dynamical cores numerically represent the resolved fluid motions in weather and climate models and strongly influence their accuracy\, stability\, conservation\, computational efficiency\, and physical fidelity. Using the 2026 FIFA World Cup as an organizing analogy\, I will survey the international landscape of dynamical-core development and the strategic choices underlying atmospheric general circulation models. These choices include governing equation sets\, computational grids and staggering\, vertical coordinates\, numerical methods\, physics–dynamics coupling\, dissipation\, filtering\, and parameter tuning. Model intercomparison projects and hierarchical test suites serve as referees\, exposing numerical artifacts\, grid imprinting\, excessive or insufficient diffusion\, and divergent representations of precipitation and stratospheric circulation. Results demonstrate that seemingly technical design and tuning decisions can substantially alter simulated weather systems and large-scale circulation.\n\nI will also examine emerging frontiers: global convection-allowing simulations at 1–3 km resolution\, adaptive mesh refinement\, nonhydrostatic deep-atmosphere equation sets\, and potentially non-spherical Earth formulations. These advances require scalable\, hardware-agnostic software that exploits graphics processing units and emerging programming frameworks such as C++/Kokkos\, Python\, and JAX. Machine-learning emulators\, artificial-intelligence-assisted development\, efficient data strategies\, and models carrying hundreds of tracers offer additional opportunities. Together\, these developments point toward more accurate\, physically complete\, computationally portable\, and systematically evaluated dynamical cores for next-generation weather\, climate\, and whole-atmosphere prediction.\n\nBio:\nChristiane Jablonowski is a Professor in the Department of Climate and Space Sciences and Engineering at the University of Michigan. She also worked at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR)\, NOAA's Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory\, and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). Dr. Jablonowski’s research lies at the interface between weather and climate modeling\, scientific computing\, and data science. \n\nHer research portfolio includes atmospheric fluid dynamics\, weather and climate modeling including high-resolution modeling\, climate model hierarchies\, scientific computing\, and machine learning techniques for the climate sciences. She works with the weather and climate models from NCAR\, NOAA\, and the Department of Energy (DoE). Dr. Jablonowski is the recipient of a DoE Early Career Award and the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). She is a co-lead of NOAA's Convection-Allowing Model for short-range weather forecasts with the Unified Forecast System (UFS) and serves on the Steering Committee for NCAR’s Community Earth System Model (CESM).
