SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Ziwet Lecture II: Lorentzian Polynomials\, Matroids over Hyperfields\, and Related Topics
DESCRIPTION:Lorentzian polynomials serve as a bridge between continuous and discrete convex analysis\, with tropical geometry providing the critical link. The tropical connection is used to produce Lorentzian polynomials from discrete convex functions\, leading for example to a short proof of Mason's conjecture on the number of independent sets of a matroid. This lecture series will explore the intricate relationships among Grassmannians over hyperfields\, dequantization processes\, and the theory of Lorentzian polynomials. In ongoing collaborative work with Matt Baker\, Mario Kummer\, and Oliver Lorscheid\, we extend the connection between Lorentzian polynomials and discrete convex functions to matroids over triangular hyperfields\, as introduced by Viro. This extension deepens our understanding of the space of Lorentzian polynomials\, revealing a complex interplay among analysis\, combinatorics\, and geometry.\n\nThe three lectures in this series are designed to be accessible to a broad audience and appropriate for a Department Colloquium.\n\nAmong his many honors\, Prof. Huh is a recipient of the Fields Medal (2022)\, the MacArthur Fellowship (2022)\, and the New Horizons in Mathematics Prize (2019). He received his PhD in Mathematics from U-M in 2014.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Foundations of Community Engagement
DESCRIPTION:Foundations of Community Engagement is an interactive workshop that introduces principles and practices of equitable\, ethical community engagement. Participants will develop a deeper understanding of what the term “community engagement” means\, as well as the many forms it might take - from research and course-based projects to philanthropy\, activism\, policy\, and direct service. Across all these forms of engagement\, participants will learn concepts and actions that promote equitable partnerships\, center community-defined priorities\, and disrupt entrenched power dynamics between universities and community members. Participants will also discuss real-world community engagement scenarios that ask them to apply what they’ve learned in the workshop to various situations.\n\n**This workshop is an updated version of Ginsberg’s long-standing Entering\, Engaging\, and Exiting (E3) session. If you’ve attended that session in the past\, you’ll gain additional knowledge from this session.**\n\nRegister for a Session Here: https://sessions.studentlife.umich.edu/track/event/16509

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Winckelmann and Pindar: Figures of Friendship in Winckelmann’s Letters
DESCRIPTION:GERALD F. ELSE LECTURE IN THE HUMANITIES\n\nThe friendship letters of Johann Joachim Winckelmann (1717 – 1768)\, the so-called ‘father’ of classical art history\, merit attention as an important corpus within canons of gay male history constructed by activists from the 19th century onwards and as a case study of the afterlife of classical literature in vernacular writing of the late early modern era. In this lecture\, which forms part of a project on the landscape of Latin\, Greek\, and vernacular learning that lies behind Winckelmann’s correspondence\, Professor Harloe will explore the importance of Winckelmann’s reading of Pindar to his idealisation of ancient Greece and his framing of his relationship to one epistolary friend\, the Livonian Grand Tourist\, Reinhold von Berg.\n\nProfessor Katherine Harloe is the Director of the Institute of Classical Studies within the School of Advanced Study at the University of London. She represents the Institute both at home and abroad\, guiding its policies and development in consultation with colleagues to ensure that the Institute fulfills its role in promoting and facilitating research in Classics and related disciplines\, nationally and internationally. As the Director\, Professor Harloe also serves as the General Editor of the Institute's Publications.
