DESCRIPTION:Join the Quantitative Methods in the Social Science (QMSS) program for a fun welcome back for the Winter 2026 semester with free food from Pita Way and a chance to win some U-M-themed prizes in the form of a casual\, bar trivia-style Family Feud game to spark conversation (no participation in the trivia is required to attend!)! First\, you can participate by completing a survey full of fun questions about being a college student at the University of Michigan (https://myumi.ch/15e7r). Then\, join us for free food\, music\, and a chance to win some Michigan-themed prizes with friends and peers at your tables in a casual\, bar trivia-style version of Family Feud!\n\nThis version of Family Feud is a little different from the classic game show with Steve Harvey. In our event\, we will drop questions off at your tables\, and all tables can work together to come up with what YOU think the most popular answers from the survey were (keeping in mind what you responded if you filled out the survey beforehand!). Then\, you'll submit your responses to our host\, and points will be awarded to teams who guess the correct responses\, with more points for their correct order. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Exterior Cyclic Polytopes and Convexity of Amplituhedra (Combinatorics Seminar)
DESCRIPTION:We introduce a new polytope called the exterior cyclic polytope. Our motivation comes from particle physics\, and in particular from a semialgebraic set called the amplituhedron which lives in a Grassmannian Gr(k\, r) and appears in calculations of particle scattering. \n\nThe exterior cyclic polytope is defined as the convex hull of the amplituhedron in the ambient Plücker space of Gr(k\, r). We describe its face structure and facets\, which in the case k=2 are controlled by a matroid called the hyperconnectivity matroid. Furthermore\, we describe the dual of the k=2 and r=4 polytope in terms of the twist map of Marsh and Scott\, and use this to define a notion of dual amplituhedron. This is joint work with Elia Mazzucchelli.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AIM Seminar:  Metric lines in Carnot groups
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:  Among nilpotent Lie groups\, Carnot groups form a particularly important subclass\, with the Heisenberg group being the most well-known example. Carnot groups admit a sub-Riemannian structure. Thus\, to broaden the context\, a sub-Riemannian geodesic is a local arc-length-minimizing curve. A natural question is: What are the conditions for a geodesic to be a global minimizer? A curve is called a metric line if it is a globally minimizing geodesic\; an alternative term is “an isometric embedding of the real line.” The talk is devoted to presenting the results and ideas that inspired me to formulate a conjecture classifying metric lines in Carnot groups\, as well as the results obtained in this direction. \n\nContact:  AIM Seminar Organizers

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Beyond Documentary Art: Russian Poetry and Radical Regimes of Truth
DESCRIPTION:In the contemporary era of post-truth politics\, documentary art forms that seek to redefine the meaning and authority of truth have acquired renewed significance. This lecture examines the development of documentary poetry in Russian literature.\n\nIn the 2000s and 2010s\, Russian poetry saw an intensive turn toward documentary forms based on interviews with real people\, court records\, media quotations\, and historical documents. Such poetry has typically adopted a pronounced anti-totalitarian stance\, aiming to expose the narratives of Kremlin propaganda as well as entrenched clichés of public consciousness. A comparable surge of interest in documentary and reportage-based writing occurred in the 1920s\, when left-wing writers after the Bolshevik Revolution—including Vladimir Mayakovsky and Nikolai Aseev—sought to record society’s movement toward communism through what was known as the “literature of fact.” At the same time\, unofficial poets\, excluded from publication\, depicted the darker dimensions of Soviet life and human experience.\nThis lecture argues that contemporary documentary poetry is genealogically closer not to Soviet “literature of fact\,” but to the unofficial poetic traditions of the Soviet era. It also proposes a new theoretical framework for understanding documentary poetry as a form that resists stable definition. This framework draws on Michel Foucault’s concept of “regimes of truth” and rethinks documentary poetry as a site where competing truth claims are produced\, contested\, and revisited.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Healing the Womb: Uterine Amulets in the Roman World
DESCRIPTION:Anna Bonnell Freidin\, U-M associate professor of history\, talks about a class of largely hematite and red jasper amulets known as \"uterine amulets\,\" contextualizing them in the daily lives of Roman women. The university holds one of the most extensive collections of uterine amulets in the world\, and a diverse selection are highlighted in the exhibit Materia Magica: Materiality and Ritual in the Greco-Roman World (https://events.umich.edu/event/142417).\n\nFreidin's expertise centers around gender\, daily life\, and science and medicine in the Roman empire. Her 2024 monograph\, \"Birthing Romans: Childbearing and Its Risks in Imperial Rome\,\" examines how pregnancy and childbirth were understood\, experienced\, and managed in ancient Rome during the first three centuries of the Common Era. Materiality and the multisensory are key features of her dynamic and innovative scholarship.
