SUMMARY:Exhibition:Small Works: Prints & Book Objects from Detroit\, 2020–2026
DESCRIPTION:Small Works\nPrints & Book Objects from Detroit 2020–2026\n\nOctober 27 - November 19 \nPublic Reception: Friday\, November 13 from 4:30-6pm.\n\nSmall Works was a print shop ran by Li Chen & Gerald Schulze\, in Detroit\, MI\, from 2020–2026. Mariana Matos joined as the studio assistant\, and later studio manager\, in 2024. Over those six years\, the business grew from an extension of their design practice to a community space that hosts more than 70 classes a year\, open studio for the public\, and year long funded fellowships that investigate practice in art and design related to the Book Arts. In 2026\, they decided to expand community programming\, and to accommodate this expansion closed Small Works\, and formed Center for the Book Arts Detroit (BAD) which operates in the same space.\n\nThis exhibition is a eulogy for the former Small Works shop\, and a celebration of all the people who made work here. It also serves to show what is possible as a community\, when they share space and create work together. \n\nThe work featured is a collection of things printed by Small Works\, by their studiomates Diskette Press\, the publisher Maamoul Press\, and by the community that uses the space.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:“Who Counts? A History of Voting in America”
DESCRIPTION:Changes over the course of the nineteenth century in how Americans voted\, from voice vote to public ballot box to private voting booth\, also saw changes in the material culture that surrounded voting. Ballots and ballot boxes\, campaign pins and ribbons\, blank lists and pre-printed party tickets\, lanterns and banners–the creative forces of the American print industry filled the country’s cities and small towns with the ephemera of electioneering.\n\nAs you look at the items in this exhibit\, think about what they tell us about how Americans in the past felt about voting\, and about how voting felt. How did Election Days feel when they were full of parades and music and public drinking? What was it like to vote when everyone around you knew who you voted for? And\, most of all\, who counted as a voter\, and who did the counting?\n\nOn view September 11-December 22\, weekdays from 12-4 pm.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Algorithmic Awareness: An AI Workshop for Master's Students
DESCRIPTION:Do you wonder how AI impacts the integrity of your research data? Are you concerned about hidden biases within automated tools? This workshop introduces algorithmic awareness as a vital skill for modern scholars. We provide specific tools to help you identify factual errors and AI \"hallucinations\" in your output. Participants learn to value human perspectives over machine-generated summaries to ensure inclusive research practices. This session serves incoming graduate students looking to build an ethical foundation for their academic careers.\n\nThis workshop is designed for master's students.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Applied Physics | Atomically Thin Quantum Sensors
DESCRIPTION:Solid-state spin defects have revolutionized quantum sensing by enabling nanoscale measurements with subwavelength spatial resolution and sensitivity to diverse physical signals. To fully harness these capabilities\, one must minimize both the distance between the sensor and the target\, as well as the smallest detectable signal. However\, established systems such as nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond often face limitations when operated close to surfaces or confined to nanoscale volumes\, motivating the exploration of spin-active defects in novel\, atomically thin materials.\n\nIn this talk\, I will present an experimental framework for studying a new two-dimensional spin ensemble hosted in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). I will discuss how we probe the spin Hamiltonian\, characterize coherent sensing dynamics\, and identify the noise environment of this2D platform. By precisely mapping hyperfine interactions with nearby nuclear spins\, we demonstrate controllable switching between magnetic and electric field sensing\, as well as develop strategies to build atomic registers. I will also introduce a new method for reconstructing the local noise spectrum that directly accounts for imperfections in quantum control.\n\nOur measurements reveal a coherence time of up to 0.1 milliseconds and AC magnetic sensitivities at the nanotesla level for targets only 10 nanometers away – approaching the regime needed to detect single nuclear spins. These advances\, together with the design flexibility of atomically thin hosts like hBN\, open pathways toward next-generation quantum sensors that combine ultrahigh sensitivity\, tunable noise selectivity\, and reconfigurable quantum functionalities.

SUMMARY:Performance:Austin Zhu\, carillon
DESCRIPTION:Economics graduate student Austin Zhu performs on the Charles Baird Carillon\, an instrument of 53 bronze bells located inside the Burton Memorial Tower. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8)\, and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Hearing protection earmuffs are provided for visitors. Be prepared to walk on ice and snow in the bell chamber during winter. Built in 1936\, the Charles Baird Carillon is not ADA accessible. Visitors with mobility concerns are invited to visit the Lurie Carillon.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Ethics 101 (Virtual) - Expanded Sessions Beyond Ethics & Compliance Week
DESCRIPTION:Open to faculty\, staff\, and Michigan Medicine.\nEthics 101 is an introductory workshop designed to help U‑M employees navigate everyday situations where the “right next step” may not be obvious. Grounded in the university’s values and the realities of our work\, the session builds shared language for ethical decision-making\, offers practical tools for addressing uncertainty\, and clarifies when and where to seek guidance. Participants will work through brief\, relatable scenarios and leave with concrete strategies they can apply immediately. \nParticipants will be able to:\nUnderstand and apply UM’s definition of ethical conduct. \nRecognize common “ethical tension” situations in university settings (e.g.\, conflicts of interest\, gifts\, appropriate use of resources\, data stewardship\, respectful conduct).\nIdentify practical steps to take when an ethical issue arises.\nPractice using short scenarios to choose value-aligned responses and identify next best actions.
