SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:After the Credential Society
DESCRIPTION:Over the course of the twentieth century the United States was a world leader in expanding access to formal schooling: first by providing school access to all of its citizens through high school\; then in funding postsecondary education and variously encouraging mass completion of four-year degrees. In the process we created a schooled society\, in which school credentials are primary mechanisms for mediating and producing identity as well as sorting and stratifying persons\, groups\, occupations\, and knowledge. Sociologists have yet to theorize an historical epoch that might come after the schooled society. I provide empirical motivation for pursuing such an enteprise and sketch its broad outlines.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:C-networks and the Ising inverse problem
DESCRIPTION:I will talk about a solution to the inverse problem for Ising models on reduced planar graphs in a disk\, i.e.\, recovering the edge coupling constants from the boundary spin correlations. A recursive solution to this problem was provided by Galashin-Pylyavskyy. The solution I will present is non-recursive. It is based on an Ising model analog of the chamber ansatz which asserts that the inverse map should factor through variables on the graph that transform under the Ising Y-Δ move according to the discrete CKP equation. This is joint work with Terrence George.

By providing a structured\, yet casual\, environment\, we aim to reduce transitional anxiety\, foster peer-to-peer mentorship\, and combat the isolation often felt in accelerated graduate programs\, all while helping students develop networking skills along the way.
