DESCRIPTION:In addition to the renowned fictional archaeologist-spy Indiana Jones\, the connection between archaeology and espionage is well-founded throughout the 20th century in real figures like Gertrude Bell and John Caskey. But “the links between archaeology and espionage aren’t limited to the twentieth century\,” writes Jarrett Lobel in the November/December 2025 issue of *Archaeology* magazine. “The professions are also linked in the tablets of ancient Mesopotamia”—and especially in Old Babylonian-period examples detailing the art of spying\, extensive networks of intermediaries\, and clandestine exchanges. \n\nAt this Flash Talk\, hear from Sergio Alivernini\, an Assyriologist at the Oriental Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences\, as he discusses the politics\, intrigue\, and espionage found in tablets originating from the Mesopotamian Kingdom of Mari (ca. 2900–1762 BCE).\n\nTo register for this Flash Talk\, fill out the form at https://forms.gle/YLa4fXgc6redYExFA. DESCRIPTION:Heartfulness Guided Meditation is a weekly\, drop-in program designed to help you Mental well-being. \n\nAll U-M students\, faculty\, and staff are welcome to participate in guided meditation practice with a trainer every Friday at noon over Zoom (details to join are provided below). No prior experience with meditation is required. \n\n*What will you learn?*\n\nThe guided meditation practice involves three simple steps: relaxation\, rejuvenation\, and meditation.\n\nRelaxation brings your body to a calm\, steady posture creating a stillness at the physical level\, and prepares the mind for meditation. We follow this with a rejuvenation method to detox the mind to let go of stress and complex emotions\, and will leave you feeling light and refreshed. Lastly\, learning to meditate by being mindful of your heart will connect you with yourself by listening to your heart’s voice. \n\n*Why Meditate?*\n\nWhile physical fitness keeps our bodies in shape\, meditation is an exercise for the mind and mental wellness. DESCRIPTION:Although Chlamydomonas is the most well-known “model” organism\, other green algae present interesting physiologies for investigation or offer experimental advantages for research. In addition to the Chlamydomonas genome\, the group has assembled genomes for Dunaliella spp.\, Chromochloris zofingiensis and Auxenochlorella protothecoides. I will present work on the mechanism of translation of nucleus-encoded bicistronic mRNAs\, structural analysis of photosystem I from Fe-deficient Dunaliella spp. and synthetic biology in Auxenochlorella to generate a complex bioproduct. These stories exemplify the contributions to basic and applied research of studies using simple unicellular organisms.\n\nHost: Libo Shan

SUMMARY:Presentation:Museum Studies Program\, Museums at Noon
DESCRIPTION:A central issue animating and transforming the museum sector today is the call to decolonize. This appeal began with Indigenous activists\, whose communities have been overwhelmingly hurt by the museum sector’s history and status quo. Museums of mass violence – Holocaust museums\, paradigmatic among them – have been largely exempt from decolonial critiques. As products of 20th and 21st-century social justice mandates and often created at the behest of survivor communities\, they seem at first glance not to be obvious targets for such scrutiny. Yet\, Holocaust museums are not free from entanglements with state power nor from inherited traditions and infrastructures of museum practice with their attendant biases\, exclusions\, and silences. DESCRIPTION:Saya Lee is an assistant professor in the Ken and Mary Alice Lindquist Department of Nuclear Engineering. Lee earned his Ph.D. in nuclear engineering from Texas A&M University and his M.S. in mechanical engineering and B.S. in mechanical and electrical engineering with a minor in computer science from Handong University in South Korea. Lee has expertise in experimental nuclear thermal hydraulics for both light water reactors and advanced reactors and is developing advanced measurement techniques.\n\nThe NERS Colloquia Series invites leading researchers\, industry experts\, and thought leaders from across the nuclear engineering and radiological sciences community to share their insights with students\, faculty\, and guests. Covering a wide range of topics—from cutting-edge research and emerging technologies to policy\, education\, and professional development—the weekly talks offer an opportunity to explore current issues and innovations shaping the future of the field.
