SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Study Abroad Info Session: GCC London\, UK - Literary Monsters
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this virtual Info Session to learn more about the CGIS: Global Course Connections (GCC) in London\, UK - Literary Monsters study abroad program for Spring 2027! Unable to Join? Register for the Info Session and even if you can't make it\, you'll automatically be sent a recording. \n\nGCC Program Model: \nGlobal Course Connections (GCC) programs allow students to participate in a field-based extension of selected U-M courses. Students enroll for specific courses in the fall or winter semester and then travel for 3 weeks with classmates to field sites where they will put into practice what they have learned in their course. Instructor permission is required to register\, and courses are offered through individual academic departments.\n\nWhy choose a GCC program?: \n+Unique UM faculty-led programs are a great way to maximize learning during a short-term study abroad experience.+\n+Preparation in the classroom before you go abroad makes it easy to hit the ground running with good cultural context.+\n+GCC programs allow for close-knit relationships between students and faculty.  You get to know your team well throughout the semester leading up to the field component.+\n\nGCC London- Literary Monsters Overview: \nMoving among the people and streets of London and studying the political and cultural power historically centered there\, students will deepen their understanding of the cultural and geographic origins and histories of British literary monsters such as Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Robert Louis Stevenson’s Mr. Hyde. The layered geography of the city itself\, its neighborhoods and institutions and cemeteries\, will become our classroom as well as an additional kind of course text\, as we unpack the anxieties about foreignness\, status\, and marginalization that tales of monstrosity have documented and critiqued. Building on concepts studied throughout the Winter semester\, students will have rich new opportunities to think about what monstrosity means in this particular material setting and historical moment\, visit London's past imaginatively and in some sense quite literally\, and continue to discover what kind of monster stories they themselves have to tell.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:“Who Counts? A History of Voting in America”
DESCRIPTION:Changes over the course of the nineteenth century in how Americans voted\, from voice vote to public ballot box to private voting booth\, also saw changes in the material culture that surrounded voting. Ballots and ballot boxes\, campaign pins and ribbons\, blank lists and pre-printed party tickets\, lanterns and banners–the creative forces of the American print industry filled the country’s cities and small towns with the ephemera of electioneering.\n\nAs you look at the items in this exhibit\, think about what they tell us about how Americans in the past felt about voting\, and about how voting felt. How did Election Days feel when they were full of parades and music and public drinking? What was it like to vote when everyone around you knew who you voted for? And\, most of all\, who counted as a voter\, and who did the counting?\n\nOn view September 11-December 22\, weekdays from 12-4 pm.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Clean Up and Organize Your Canvas Courses with TidyUP
DESCRIPTION:In this hands-on workshop\, you’ll learn how to use TidyUP (a Cidi Labs tool) to clean up and organize your Canvas course content. We’ll walk through scanning a course\, removing unused files and folders\, organizing files in use\, finding duplicate files and content\, and reviewing unpublished or empty course content and items not included in a module. You’ll also learn best practices for maintaining your Canvas courses with TidyUP. This workshop is designed for instructors and staff who manage or support Canvas courses. No prior experience with TidyUP is required.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Cosmo Whyte: Under the Quiet\, Beyond the Eye
DESCRIPTION:\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\n\nStamps Gallery kicks off the fall 2026 semester with an ambitious mid-career survey of interdisciplinary artist Cosmo Whyte. Born and raised in Jamaica\, Whyte completed a BFA from Bennington College and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan. He is currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architecture\, UCLA.\n\nThis exhibition brings together two central concerns that animate Whyte’s artistic practice: the archive\, both personal and public\, as a site of disturbance\; and migration as a lived experience of refuge\, refusal\, and reinvention. In Whyte’s work\, the archive is never static or neutral. Rather\, it is a contested space where official histories encounter memory\, inheritance\, and the fragments of stories carried across generations. His practice moves within this charged interstitial terrain\, between what has been recorded and what has been remembered\, between institutional knowledge and embodied experience. Whyte invites the viewer to consider the fluidity of geographic borders and layered cultural identities that have persisted despite societal unrest caused by racial and socio-economic hierarchies across generations. In an era of intensified border politics and renewed debates over national identity\, Whyte’s work offers a timely meditation on memory\, movement\, and belonging.\n\nPresented with support from the U-M Institute for Humanities\, the U-M LSA Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\, and the U-M Library.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Brown Bag Seminar | What is the simplest holographic matrix model?
DESCRIPTION:I’ll talk about a Hermitian two matrix model called the Hoppe model\, which has an interesting strong coupling limit where the matrices commute with each other. Furthermore\, there exists an emergent area preserving diffeomorphism symmetry of this model at strong coupling\, which allows us to completely solve it at leading order. The solution for all n-point connected correlators takes the form of a Witten diagram-like expansion in an emergent two-dimensional spacetime. I’ll also briefly talk about commuting strong coupling limits in more general multi-matrix integrals\, including supersymmetric ones. The talk will be based on https://arxiv.org/pdf/2608.14781 and https://arxiv.org/pdf/2607.21593.
