SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:West African & Modern Dance Technique with Erika Stowall\, SMTD Alumni Award Winner
DESCRIPTION:Erika Stowall presents a master class with a mixture of West African and Modern dance technique\, consisting of grounded movement and floorwork. Students will explore movements which will incorporate the whole body through polyrhythms and syncopation. Free and open to the public\; located in The Berg (1020 Dance / Studio 2).\n\nWinner of the 2023 Emerging Artist in Dance Award from SMTD Alumni Board\, ERIKA \"RED\" STOWALL (BFA ’08\, dance) is an educator\, dancer\, and choreographer residing in Detroit\, Michigan. Stowall is a recipient of the Kresge Artist Fellowship\, Applebaum’s Emerging Artist Award\, and a Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad grant\, awarded through the University of Detroit Mercy. Stowall uses her classical training\, combined with her background in West African dance\, as the foundation of her work. She also enjoys adding her love of mythology\, anime\, and comic books/graphic novels into her dances.\n\nMany of her works explore her real-life experiences navigating being a Black woman in society. Her work is based on positive portrayal of Black stories and advocating for Black women’s voices. Stowall sees dance as a calling and is passionate about creating performance pieces that invite conversation on safe spaces for women of color\, restoration\, and positive narrative/images of Black communities. She is currently the dance teacher at Martin Luther King Jr. High School in Detroit\, her alma mater. Stowall is the founder and current artistic director of Big Red Wall Dance Company\, which has been active since 2011.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Allocation Mechanisms with Mixture-Averse Preferences
DESCRIPTION:Consider an economy with equal amounts of N types of goods\, to be allocated to agents with strict quasi-convex preferences over lotteries. We show that ex-ante\, all Pareto efficient allocations give almost all agents lotteries over at most two outcomes. Therefore\, even if all preferences are the same\, some identical agents necessarily receive different lotteries. Our results provide a simple criterion to show that many popular allocation mechanisms are ex-ante inefficient. Assuming the reduction axiom\, social welfare deteriorates by first randomizing over these binary lotteries. Efficient full ex-ante equality is achieved if agents satisfy the compound independence axiom.

She currently serves as Senior Director of Grassroots Community Engagement at Feeding America\, where she is helping catalyze a movement to end hunger.  Throughout her career\, she's worked for the U.S. Congress\, in higher education\, in community organizing\, and in the nonprofit sector where she's created compelling\, effective campaigns on issues including workplace justice\, health care\, education\, and national service. In addition to an AB from University of Michigan in Women's Studies\, Amanda holds a Master of Studies from the University of Oxford and recently graduated with her MBA from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.\n\n\n*Sam Morykwas - Marketing Manager\, Craftsman Technology Group*\n\nSam Morykwas is a marketing professional and creative. He is currently the Marketing Manager for Craftsman Technology Group\, a technology services firm that works exclusively with nonprofit clients\, including The Trevor Project\, The ALS Association\, and Sandy Hook Promise. He previously held marketing roles at two iconic Detroit organizations\, Eastern Market Partnership and the Michigan Science Center. He started his career with a year of AmeriCorps service with the Michigan Nonprofit Association in Lansing. He works to balance his full-time career roles with his passions for music as a producer and DJ. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 2013 and spent two years in MCSP.\n\n\n*Aesha Mustafa - Clinical practitioner/Assistant Professor - Integrative Empowerment Group/Eastern Michigan University*\n\nDr. Aesha Mustafa (she/her) is a scholar and clinical practitioner. She is an Assistant Professor in\nthe Leadership and Counseling Department at Eastern Michigan University. Her research focuses\non how Black tenure-track faculty at predominately White research one institutions describe and\nenact their personal and professional commitments while navigating their institutions’ priorities\nand reward structure. Through her research\, Dr. Mustafa amplifies Black faculty’s stories of\nbrilliance and resistance.\n\nShe also demonstrates a deep commitment to enhancing marginalized students&#39\; academic and\nsocial progress. Her approach to teaching is to bring her whole self and intersecting identities\ninto the classroom. In bringing her whole self into the classroom\, she teaches about social\ninequality and injustice from a place of wellness\, wholeness\, and joy.\n\nFinally\, Dr. Mustafa is the Resident Mental Health Expert on EMU’s “Enlighten U\,” a podcast\nthat addresses college student mental health topics. Her expertise draws from her work as a\nlicensed clinical social worker and co-owner of Integrative Empowerment Group\, a Ypsilanti-\nbased group private practice focused on serving marginalized populations.\n\n\n*Nyah Pierson - HS Academic Coordinator\, Racquet Up Detroit*\n\nNyah Pierson is a metro Detroit native. A graduate of Michigan\, class of 2020\, Nyah was an avid activist in the performing arts community on campus within SMTD & LSA. She was a MCSP resident\, student leader for the community service branch\, and a residential advisor within the community during her time on campus. Since graduating with her dual degrees (Theatre Performance: Acting & Psychology)\, she has worked in various industries within the nonprofit sector. From nonprofit theatre to youth development organizations\, Nyah strives to help each team she’s participated on reach deep within their mission & purpose to expand each organization’s reach. \n\n\n*Trista Van Tine\, Technology Startup Founder & CEO*\n\nTrista is the founder of an emerging venture-backed AI startup designed to help distributed people networks scale their services.\nAfter leading business development and marketing teams across multiple industries in the UK\, California\, New York and Switzerland\, she returned to Michigan in 2020\, co-founded Michigan Founders Fund (MFF) and served as its Executive Director through 2023. This statewide effort to build bridges across each region of the state in service of high-growth founders has been a model of culture and community for other entrepreneurial support organizations and was designated and funded as a Small Business Support Hub by Governor Whitmer. Trista also created Michigan Tech Week\, established the first of its kind team-style pitch competition for founders from different companies to win non-dilutive funding with the MFF Venture Competition\; launched a DEIB Internship Program for underrepresented students to get experience in tech startups and VC\, established the MFF Founders Retreat\, and helped MFF achieve the 100-member milestone in a short period of time.\n\nTrista has been recognized as a 2024 Top Women in Tech\, was named the Top Community Builder in 2023 by Purpose Jobs\, is a 2022 Crain’s Detroit 40 Under 40 awardee\, and was named by Corp! Magazine as one of the state’s Diversity Business Leaders in 2021. She earned two master’s degrees in global media and communications at the London School of Economics and the University of Southern California\; she earned her bachelor’s degree in communications with a minor in political science at the University of Michigan.\n\n\nThe Opportunity Hub aims to deliver inclusive and accessible experiences and welcomes all LSA students to participate. DESCRIPTION:First Year Fridays are afternoons designed for incoming students who are looking to make friends\, increase their knowledge and awareness of local green spaces in the Ann Arbor area\, and grow a connection with nature while recreating outdoors.\n\nParticipants will have the opportunity to engage in several types of outdoor recreation activities\, like hiking Matthaei Botanical Gardens trails and climbing at the Adventure Education Center\, and the program will include a camp-cooked dinner.\n\nNo experience necessary -- beginners are welcome! All food\, gear\, and transportation is provided. Simply show up in weather-appropriate gear. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:GL-algebras and the Noetherianity problem (combinatorics seminar)
DESCRIPTION:Draisma recently proved that finite length polynomial representations of the infinite general linear group GL are topologically GL-noetherian\, i.e.\, the descending chain condition holds for GL-stable closed subsets. The scheme-theoretic variant of this theorem is a major open problem in the area. I will briefly outline the rich history of this problem and provide a negative answer in characteristic two.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | New (Non-)Supersymmetric Phases in N=4 SYM
DESCRIPTION:In this work\, we extend our current understanding of the phase diagram of N=4 SYM at any given set of charges (Microcanonical Ensemble) by proposing various new phases. These new phases correspond to hairy black hole solutions in the bulk gravitational theory and are easier to construct and analyze due to the emergence of a \"Non-interacting\" picture. The new phases continue to exist even in the supersymmetric limit and contribute to an extra parameter (amount of \"hair\") worth of solutions. The presence of new supersymmetric solutions predicts a phase transition in the superconformal index of N=4 SYM.
