SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Biomedical Engineering (BME 500) Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Inflammation-on-a-Chip: Redefining How We Study Immune Responses\nAbstract:\n\nThe innate immune response must coordinate diverse cell populations to eliminate pathogens\, heal wounds\, and maintain tissue homeostasis. This coordination depends on dynamic communication between immune cells and their surrounding tissue environment\, yet even subtle disruptions in these interactions can drive chronic inflammation and contribute to diseases including cancer\, cardiovascular disease\, fibrosis\, and autoimmunity. As immunotherapies continue to transform the treatment of disease\, a central challenge remains: understanding how innate immune cells integrate complex environmental cues to execute precise\, context-dependent functions.\n\nA major obstacle to answering this question has been the lack of experimental models that recapitulate the human inflammation microenvironment. Conventional in vitro systems often fail to capture the three-dimensional architecture of tissues or critical multicellular interactions that shape immune responses in vivo. In this seminar\, I will present our research investigating cell-cell interactions using our “inflammation-on-a-chip” microphysiological system with a focus on critical signaling between myeloid cells\, neutrophils\, and the vascular endothelium. \n\nBio:\nLaurel Hind is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of Colorado – Boulder. She received her BS in Chemical and Biological Engineering from the University of Wisconsin – Madison in 2009 and her PhD in Bioengineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 2015 before beginning her postdoc at University of Wisconsin – Madison. She joined the faculty at the University of Colorado – Boulder in January 2020. Her research group is broadly interested in using engineered devices to understand how diverse signals in the tissue microenvironment regulate the innate immune response. She received an NIGMS R35 Early Investigator MIRA award in 2021\, was awarded an NSF CAREER award in 2025\, and was named a CMBE Rising Star in 2025.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:IES Energy Seminar Series - Planning optimization approaches for power systems under wildfire-related decision-dependent uncertainty
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nThe interaction between power systems and wildfires can be dangerous and costly. Distribution grids can be liable for the outbreak of wildfires during extreme weather. In wildfire-prone areas\, investment planning should consider the impact of operational actions on wildfire-related uncertainties affecting line failure likelihood. To address this planning exercise\, we propose two decision-dependent uncertainty (DDU) aware frameworks to optimize the combination of upgrades to improve the system’s ability to deal with wildfires. The first one is two-stage distributionally robust planning optimization problem with DDU\, where the first stage determines optimal switching actions and line investments\, and the second stage evaluates the worst-case expected operational cost under a DDU framework designed to account for the endogenous impact of power-flow levels and hardening investment decisions in the line failure probabilities. The second one is a multi-horizon planning framework that integrates these timescales within a single distributionally robust stochastic optimization model to capture both long-term and short-term uncertainties. We develop an exact decomposition algorithm that produces coordinated investment and operational policies across both horizons.\n\nBiography:\nAlexandre Moreira is a research scientist in the Energy Technologies Area at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. His research applies mathematical programming techniques to critical questions in power systems planning\, operations\, and economics\, with a particular focus on novel methodologies for transmission expansion planning that account for reliability and resilience. At Berkeley Lab\, he leads and collaborates on projects that develop foundational modeling frameworks and tools to (i) formulate risk-based optimization and decision-making models to propose transparent\, well-informed \"cost vs. risk\" tradeoffs for infrastructure planning\, and (ii) support the valuation of emerging technologies. He holds BSc and MSc degrees from PUC-Rio\, Brazil\, and a PhD from Imperial College London.\n\n\nFor the most up to date information on the location\, please check the related link the week of this event

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Thursday Seminar Series - Variation in life history strategies shapes evolution across the tree of fishes
DESCRIPTION:Seminar Summary - My research explores how ecology and life history strategies drive evolutionary processes and patterns in fishes. Life history strategies have direct links to fitness and vary dramatically among lineages\, and this variation can drive rates and patterns of trait evolution. In this talk I will highlight recent work demonstrating how a migratory life history strategy can influence trait evolution among populations and across clades spanning the fish tree of life. I will also present new research on macroevolution and diversification of lampreys\, an ancient lineage of jawless fishes with remarkably different life history strategies long thought to be linked to a novel speciation process.
