SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:IES Energy Seminar Series - Nuclear Energy’s Next Act: Innovation\, Federal Support and the Role of Modeling and Simulation
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThe U.S. nuclear industry is entering a new chapter\, driven by rising energy demand\, renewed public interest\, and unprecedented federal support. This talk will explore the forces behind today’s nuclear momentum\, including efforts to deploy advanced reactors\, strengthen domestic nuclear capabilities\, and sustain the performance of the existing reactor fleet. It will also highlight the growing role of modeling and simulation in this evolving landscape. As innovative reactor concepts move from idea to deployment\, predictive tools are increasingly essential for understanding system behavior\, guiding design and licensing\, and evaluating technologies for which experimental data remain limited. Together\, public investment\, industry innovation\, and advanced computational tools are helping shape nuclear energy’s next act.\n\nBiography:\nDr. Emily Shemon is a nuclear engineer at the Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory. She serves on the extended leadership team of the DOE’s Nuclear Energy Advanced Modeling and Simulation (NEAMS) Program where she manages development\, validation\, and deployment of multiphysics tools for nuclear reactor analysis. She currently leads technical teams that develop high fidelity meshing software as well as fast reactor technology modeling capabilities. She co-leads the National Reactor Innovation Center’s Virtual Test Bed efforts\, which supports industry adoption of advanced modeling and simulation through the open sharing of models. Dr. Shemon also has a background in high-performance computing and is on staff at Argonne’s Leadership Computing Facility. She is a graduate of the University of Michigan’s Department of Nuclear Engineering & Radiological Sciences where she received a Ph.D. in 2011.\n\n\nFor the most up to date information on the location\, please check the related link the week of this event

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Biscuits\, Cornbread\, Tortillas\, Naan: Making Sense of the American South through Baking
DESCRIPTION:Biscuits\, cornbread\, hot rolls\, mile-high cakes\, steaming cobblers — southern baking holds a towering place in the realm of American cookery. Founded on Native American\, English\, and African traditions\, and raised in a hot\, humid climate\, southern baking developed in distinctive ways. We'll talk about how southerners over four centuries have shaped their baking around corn and flour and made it their own. \n\nWe are delighted to welcome the first speaker to give a Longone Lecture — a biennial lecture series exploring the history of food and drink in the United States. Rebecca Sharpless\, Professor of History at Texas Christian University\, writes on the intersections of food\, women\, and work in the American South. \n\nJoin us in person (Hatcher Gallery) or via Zoom (https://umich.zoom.us/j/93172475387). Light refreshments will be served\, and copies of Professor Sharpless' recent books\, \"Grain and Fire: A History of Baking in the American South\" and \"People of the Wheat: Culture and Cultivation in North Texas\" will be available for purchase.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Thursday Seminar Series - The old field rules: the quest to develop generalizable principles about how ecosystems function
DESCRIPTION:Seminar Summary - The presentation will chronicle a journey of long-term research devoted to discovering fundamental principles—rules of life—that explain how animal species’ adaptive evolutionary ecological interactions determine how they control ecosystem functioning. I will discuss how this research journey led to systematic resolution of generalizable principles that explain how ecosystems function. The fundamental lesson is that dedication to long-term theory-informed field research can lead to a coherent predictive understanding of how ecosystems function.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Imaging Beyond the Electrode to Bridge Molecular and Macroscopic Scales using 2D IR Microscopy
DESCRIPTION:Electrochemical cells rely on redox reactions at electrode–electrolyte interfaces\, where electrode composition strongly influences reaction pathways and stability. Copper is widely used as a current collector\, yet its interfacial redox dynamics in ionic liquid electrolytes remain poorly understood on ultrafast timescales. Traditional electrochemical techniques provide macroscopic insight but lack the temporal resolution to capture these dynamics. Here\, we combine two-dimensional infrared (2D IR) imaging with theory to bridge molecular-scale dynamics and macroscopic electrochemical measurements.Using time-dependent 2D IR imaging\, we probe ultrafast vibrational dynamics and chemical equilibria in an ionic liquid containing dicyanamide (DCA⁻). Although copper(I) is typically unstable in solution\, DCA⁻ stabilizes this oxidation state\, enabling the formation of both copper(I) and copper(II) DCA complexes under applied potential. Cross-peak analysis reveals dynamic equilibrium and migration of these species near the oxidizing electrode\, permitting direct observation of reaction pathways during device operation. These results provide molecular-level insight into copper redox chemistry in ionic liquid electrolytes and demonstrate the capability of 2D IR imaging for studying operating electrochemical systems. Finally\, we present a promising approach based on a spectral generalized master equation framework that dramatically reduces image acquisition time.
