SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:What’s Our Impact?: Understanding how the Arts & Humanities Matter
DESCRIPTION:As people working in the humanities and the arts\, we know our work matters–to our fields\, to our disciplines\, and to society. We have seen how the arts and humanities transform perception\, provide expertise\, and help people grapple with the biggest questions about what it means to be human and to live in an increasingly interconnected\, yet often divided world. And\, in both the arts and humanities\, we know UM faculty are contributing to their disciplines in deeply meaningful ways. \n\nYet\, for all we know about these positive effects\, arts and humanities research is often imagined to be at odds with the metric-driven language of “impact”--a term often seen as imposed from fields outside the arts and humanities. At the same time\, “impact” has become the dominant framework for measuring the value of academic research. As a result\, arts and humanities faculty are often called upon to describe our “impact” in ways that are legible to University leadership and funding imperatives\, even as we feel uneasy about how to answer such calls in ways that are authentic to our work. How do we avoid finding ourselves outside terms that are increasingly important in the fight for the continued growth and resilience of higher education in the U.S?\n\n“What’s Our Impact?: Understanding how the Arts & Humanities Matter” is a series of events slated for October 29 & 30 on UM’s Ann Arbor campus. A joint initiative of the UM Arts Initiative\, Office of Vice President of Research (OVPR)\, and the Institute for Humanities\, the gathering will serve arts and humanities faculty seeking more ways to discuss their work in terms that are legible within the ascendant impact paradigm\, while also ensuring that those terms are authentic to our disciplines\, methods\, and creative practice. Through a public conversation\, facilitated workshop\, keynote from UM leadership\, and a panel with funders\, the 1.5 day long event will bring together experts–those engaging “impact” in their research\, those in leadership\, and those community partners with whom we work–and put them in conversation with arts and humanities leadership and researchers at the University of Michigan. In addition to allowing our communities to come together to elaborate what “impact” means on our terms\, this event is also designed to help humanities and arts faculty recognize how they could become more competitive in University grant opportunities\, including the Strategic Initiative Fund\, the Arts Research: Incubation and Acceleration (ARIA) program\, Humanities Institute Fellowship\, and a range of other internal and external funding initiatives.\n\nThursday\, October 29\, 4:30-6:30\nWhat Works Now: arts and humanities advocacy in the impact paradigm \nPendleton Room\, Michigan Union (2nd floor) \na public discussion about making the best case for the arts and humanities with leading voices\, including \nProfessor Jill Dolan\, Annan Professor Emeritus of English\, Princeton University\nArtist\, Curator\, and Organizer Ryan Myers-Johnson\, Executive Director and Founder of Sidewalk Detroit\nProfessor Shelome Gooden\, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research in the Humanities\, Arts\, Social Sciences and Related Fields\, University of Pittsburgh\nJennifer Rupp\, President & CEO\, Michigan Humanities\n\nFriday\, October 30\nMichigan Room\, Michigan Union (2nd floor)\n\n9-11:30\n“Impact” in Our Own Words: a workshop for arts and humanities faculty\nArts and humanities faculty bring current project ideas and experiment with ways of discussing “impact” \n\n11:30: Lunch served\n\n12-12:45: Keynote lunch talk with Vice Provost for Arts & Humanities Sara Blair\nMichigan Room\, Michigan Union (2nd floor)\n\n1-2:30\nMaking the Case: Funders on Arts and Humanities Impact\nMichigan Room\, Michigan Union (2nd floor)\nHear from internal and external funders on how “impact” plays a role in their granting process

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:FYRST Workshops 2026 - 2027
DESCRIPTION:If you are only seeing one workshop\, please SIGN-IN and refresh the Sessions page! If still having issues\, click this link. \nFirst-Year Relationship and Sexuality Talk (FYRST) is a required\, in-person\, and peer-facilitated workshop that came directly from feedback and listening sessions with current University of Michigan students. Our goal is to create an accessible\, supportive space for student-driven conversations where all identities and experiences are welcomed and in which students can build skills and tools around identifying goals and values and then communicate effectively about those. Workshops will be offered at multiple locations and times throughout the fall semester\, so please sign up for the workshop that works for you!! First-Year Relationship Sexuality Talk (FYRST) FAQ:\n“How many workshops do I have to sign up for?”\nYou only need to sign up for 1 workshop. Attending 1 workshop will fulfill the requirement for the training. \n“I see that there is more than one session\, does it matter which one I sign up for?”\nIt generally does not matter which workshop you sign up for. There will be a few that are designated for specific groups such as transfer students or for students looking for accommodations. If you do not fit these groups please try to save these workshops for those that do and you are free to choose among any of the other workshops. \n“Is this workshop required?”\nThis workshop is required for all transfer and first-year students at the University of Michigan.\n“I’ve experienced harm around relationships or sexual experiences in the past and I am worried that attending this workshop may be harmful for me.” \nOur team is aware that students who are coming into the university that have experienced harm in the past. Our workshop is specifically designed to respect and validate the experiences of survivors and has been carefully constructed to avoid any specific descriptions of violence and focus instead on themes of empowerment\, communication\, and boundary setting. However\, if you still have concerns about programming and would like to request alternative programming\, please feel free to reach out at SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.\n“What if I struggle to learn in a presentation setting? I’m an active learner.”\nOur workshop is built to meet a variety of learning styles\, including time for self-reflection\, small group sharing\, and resources to take with you to work through on your own time! This workshop is meant to be interactive and inclusive. \n“Can I request accommodations?”\nWe considered accessibility in creating this workshop and selecting the locations in which the workshops are help. However\, we recognize many places at the University are inaccessible and we've set an * next to workshops that are on the first floor and lack stairs. These workshops also will have a presentation (other workshops we do not) and are a good fit for those who might need a large font. Please sign up for those if you feel that accommodations would assist you and reach out to SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu if you are concerned or have questions. \n“I missed my workshop\, what should I do ?”\nOur team tracks attendance at each workshop by having participants swipe in with their MCard. If you are not able to attend the workshop you signed up for\, our team will continue to send reminder emails until you have completed a workshop. In this case\, please sign up for another workshop as soon as you can as the workshop is required and may fill up especially near the end of the semester. No need to contact SAPAC unless you are not able to reschedule. \n“I have had gender-based violence training before\, can I get this requirement waived?”\nAs this workshop was designed with University of Michigan student feedback in mind\, our workshop is unique to the UM community. Our curriculum focuses on individualized reflection and because of its interactive nature\, each workshop will be unique to the people attending. Although we are excited you already have familiarity with the subject\, this workshop is required for every first year and transfer student. \n“I’m a commuter/non-traditional student\, do I still have to attend?\"\nYes\, this workshop is required for every first-year and transfer student - not only do we want every student to benefit from having this time to connect with peers\, but we also want to make sure your peers benefit from what you bring to our community. If you have any concerns or questions about being able to participate\, please contact SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.\n“I still have questions! Who should I contact?\"\nPlease contact us at SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.

SUMMARY:Performance:Korean Performing Arts Initiative | 유일한 Ilhan New: His Life in Music and Story - Featuring Original Songs by Lisa Sung
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special evening of music and storytelling celebrating the remarkable life of Ilhan New\, a Korean American entrepreneur\, philanthropist\, and University of Michigan alum. This musical performance is presented in conjunction with the Nam Center for Korean Studies’ international conference\, “Transpacific Lives in an American Century: Ilhan New as Method\,” exploring New’s life and legacy across Korea and the United States.\n\nBorn in Pyongyang\, New came to the United States at a young age and grew up in the Midwest. His journey took him from a Korean youth military school in Hastings\, Nebraska\, to Detroit and Ann Arbor\, where he studied business and commerce at the University of Michigan. In 1922\, he co-founded La Choy with his Michigan friend Wally Smith. Returning to Korea in 1926\, he established Yuhan Corporation\, a pharmaceutical company that reflected his commitment to public health and social responsibility. During and after World War II\, New also contributed to Korea’s independence efforts and the rebuilding of the nation through education\, philanthropy\, and public health initiatives. His life offers a compelling lens through which to explore migration\, identity\, entrepreneurship\, and the enduring connections between Korea and the United States.\n\nFeaturing original songs by Lisa Sung\, this performance brings New’s extraordinary story to life through music and narrative\, inviting audiences to reflect on the personal experiences and historical forces that shaped his legacy.\n\nPerformers\n- Lisa Sung — Composer and piano\n- Jeong Min Huh — Tenor\n- Brynn Hilliker — Bass\n- Cecilia Fornuto — Soprano\n- Harrison McComb — Saxophone/Flute\n- Nicholas Classen — Trombone\n- Max Wetterlen — Drums\n\n*If there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at outreachkorea@umich.edu.
