DESCRIPTION:Lon Mitchell performs on the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Carillon\, an instrument of 60 bells with the lowest bell (bourdon) weighing 6 tons.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Lurie Carillon every weekday that classes are in session. During these recitals\, visitors may take the elevator to level 2 to view the largest bells\, or to level 3 to see the carillonist performing. (Visitors subject to acrophobia are recommended to visit level 2 only.) An optional spiral stairway between levels 2 and 3 allows for up-close views of some of the largest bells.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:ChE SEMINAR: Elizabeth Nance\, *University of Washington*
DESCRIPTION:A reception with light refreshments will be held in the B10 lobby before each seminar from 1-1:30 p.m.\n\n*Abstract:*\nTherapeutics for neonatal and pediatric populations often lag years behind adult treatments\, leaving clinicians to rely on off-label use of adult drugs. This gap underscores the urgent need for technologies tailored to the unique physiology of newborns and children\, particularly for conditions involving the brain. Our research addresses this challenge by engineering microphysiological models that replicate the complexity of the brain microenvironment and enable systematic evaluation of therapeutic strategies. In this talk\, I will highlight how we use physiologically relevant models to inform the design of neuroprotective strategies for neonatal and pediatric brain diseases. I will show a few case studies of leveraging these models to screen therapeutics\, including the use of nanotechnology platforms for small molecule delivery\, to advance their use in the clinic. By bridging engineering\, neuroscience\, and data science\, our goal is to close the technology gap for children’s therapeutics and improve neurological health across the lifespan.\n\n*Bio:*\nDr. Elizabeth Nance is the Steven & Connie Rogel Endowed Professor & Department Chair of Chemical Engineering at UW\, Professor of Bioengineering\, and Adjunct Professor in Radiology. Elizabeth received her B.S. in Chemical Engineering from NC State University\, and her Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering with Dr. Justin Hanes\, with a focus on nanotherapies for brain cancer. She completed a postdoc with Dr. Sujatha Kannan in Anesthesiology & Critical Care Medicine at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine\, with training in neuroscience and animal model development. Elizabeth has received the Presidential Early Career Achievement in Science & Engineering (PECASE) award\, the UW Undergraduate Research Mentor Award\, an NIGMS R35 MIRA award\, and the Burroughs Wellcome Career Award. She was a finalist for the 2025 Blavatnik National Award for Life Sciences and was named to the College of Fellows for the Controlled Release Society. Elizabeth serves as the Editor in Chief for Bioengineering & Translational Medicine and is a mentor with Invent@Seattle Children’s to support commercialization of therapeutics for kids.

DESCRIPTION:Thank you for your interest in participating in the U-M Climate Week Day of Service! You can read about project options below and then click the link to select which project(s) you would like to join. Advance registration is highly encouraged as some projects may fill up. \n\nLove a Park Day at Fuller Park - 4-6pm\, Fuller Park - Ann Arbor Parks Volunteer Office\nJoin U-M Health and show some love for Fuller Park! A 60-acre recreation area near the University of Michigan medical campus with a pool\, trails leading to Cedar Bend Nature Area and Island Park\, and the Border to Border Trail running through it. We'll be focusing on light maintenance and general beautification tasks to help keep the park looking great for all who visit. Specific projects will be determined based on park needs at the time\, but may include activities like litter pickup\, garden care\, mulching\, or invasive shrub removal. Some tasks may involve bending\, lifting\, or being in full sun\, and work areas may have uneven terrain or minor tripping hazards.\n\nTake Action at the Arb! - 2-4pm\, Reader Center at Nichols Arboretum:\nJoin Nichols Arboretum for an EcoWorkday to celebrate Climate Week! This event focuses on invasive plant removal and strengthening ecosystems at Nichols Arboretum. Perfect for groups\, individuals\, and pairs. Some tasks may involve bending\, lifting\, or being in full sun\, and work areas may have uneven terrain or minor tripping hazards.\n\nBird Collision Inventory and Seed Library Projects  - 3:00-4:30pm\, Pierpont Commons - Boulevard Room: \nBird Collision Info Session 3-3:30pm: U-M is launching a seasonal inventory to track bird collisions on campus and use the resulting data to inform updated building design standards and identify high-priority buildings for “bird safe design” retrofits. This 30-minute info session will provide training for volunteers to participate in this year’s inventory. At the end of the session\, you can choose how you’d like to get involved with the project. \nSeed Library Project 3:30-4:30pm: Following the bird collision info session\, stay or drop in to help the U-M Seed Library package up some Thimbleweed! Thimbleweed attracts native bees among other local fauna\, so you'll be supporting a whole native ecosystem by scooping a few seeds into capsules and filling our candy ball dispenser with them. These seeds will be shared with local university community members at their upcoming Roots & Resilience event. Thanks for helping us support the local native plant and pollinators community!\n\nDay of Service Litter Cleanup\, 4-6pm\, Meet at the Diag Flag Pole in front of Hatcher Library.\nJoin SEAS Trash Club for an afternoon of litter clean-up in downtown Ann Arbor! All supplies will be provided. We’ll meet at 4:00 p.m. at the Diag flag pole\, then split up to pick up trash around the nearby streets and sidewalks of Ann Arbor. This project will be outdoors and will involve bending to pick up litter.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for Power & Place: A Negotiating Simulation on Data Centers\, taking place place on Thursday\, October 1 from 2:00-5:30 PM. This interactive negotiation role play will explore how communities\, industry representatives\, and public decision-makers navigate the complex choices surrounding data center development — from energy and water use to community impact and climate goals.\n\nParticipants will take on the roles of diverse stakeholders and explore whether and under what conditions a shared agreement is possible. Through this hands-on simulation\, participants will practice moving beyond zero-sum thinking\, framing issues strategically\, building coalitions\, and navigating compromise without sacrificing core priorities. The simulation recognizes that not everything is negotiable and reaching an agreement is not required. Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of the trade-offs\, interests and power dynamics shaping this timely\, local topic\, along with practical collaboration and negotiation skills applicable in other settings.\n\nThe event is free and open to all U-M community member\, but registration is required. Appetizers and refreshments provided.\n\nA note about participation: This is a skills-building exercise intended to foster learning across different perspectives and does not advocate\, promote\, or endorse any particular position\, policy\, company\, or project. Please note that this event is not related to the U-M LANL which will be hosting a town hall the same day in Ypsi.
