SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Three Martini Lunch: Literary Agents and the Making of American Fiction
DESCRIPTION:Chronicling the story of literary agents in the United States from the 1950s to today\, Laura McGrath uncovers their critical role in the making of American literature in *Middlemen: Literary Agents and the Making of Contemporary American Literature*. From the famed three-martini lunch to the Frankfurt Book Fair\, *Middlemen* takes readers behind the scenes to show how agents influence what we read. Weaving together original archival research\, data analysis\, and interviews with scores of agents and other publishing professionals\, *Middlemen* demonstrates that agents—eighty percent of whom are in fact women—are much more than “middlemen.” As intermediaries between author and publisher\, agents act as advocates\, matchmakers\, negotiators\, and tastemakers\, and they must balance artistic values with the commercial imperatives of publishing conglomerates.\n\nLaura B. McGrath is writer\, literary historian\, and data scientist. She is an Assistant Professor of English at Temple University and a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellow. Prior to joining the faculty at Temple\, she was the Associate Director of the Literary Lab at Stanford University. A former Kennedy Fellow with the Smithsonian Institute of American History\, her work has been supported by the NEH\, the Mellon Foundation\, ACLS\, and the Big Ten. \n\nLaura has written on books\, publishing history\, and data for *The Atlantic*\, *The Nation*\, the *Los Angeles Review of Books*\, and *Public Books*. Her book\, *Middlemen: Literary Agents and the Making of American Fiction* (Princeton University Press)\, draws on a range of methods- data analysis\, close reading\, literary ethnography- to reveal the literary agent's centrality in the development of American literature\, post-1945.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AIM Seminar: Spectral theory of soliton gases for integrable equations and related problems
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Soliton gases for integrable systems is a rapidly developing new area in the theory of nonlinear waves. The spectral theory of soliton gases is concerned about macroscopic characteristics of large soliton ensembles. We go briefly over the history of the subject\, such as V. Zakharov’s (1971) expression of the average velocity of a trial soliton in a (diluted) gas and the idea of the thermodynamic limit of wavenumbers and frequencies of finite gap solutions of G. El (2003). We then discuss some recent results and open problems\, as well as some methods of potential theory and algebraic geometry that appear to be relevant for soliton gases.\n\nContact: Peter Miller

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Chow Vanishing and Motives of Cluster Varieties
DESCRIPTION:Progress over the last decade has shown that the cohomologies of full rank\, locally acyclic cluster varieties enjoy remarkable combinatorial structures. Crucial in this program has been the observation that these cohomology groups are\, in certain Hodge theoretic senses\, about as simple as possible. In this talk we will discuss a motivic lift of this observation. In particular we establish that the Voevodsky motives of really full rank sink-recurrent cluster varieties are mixed Tate and split over Q (strengthening results of Lam and Speyer)\, and we prove that their integral Chow groups are all trivial.
