SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Nilima Sheikh: Picturing the Other
DESCRIPTION:Join acclaimed visual artist Nilima Sheikh for a conversation with Rattanamol Singh Johal about her artistic practice and engagement with traditional Indian art forms and literary sources. The conversation will be followed by an audience Q&A.\n\nNilima Sheikh’s work focuses on displacement\, loss\, longing\, violence\, the perception of tradition and ideas of femininity. Her artworks\, using tempera on handmade paper or canvas\, are influenced by Persian\, Central Asian\, Far Eastern\, pre-Renaissance European and North Indian schools of painting. Her visual and textual layering\, informed by a mix of lore and history\, offers glimpses into multiple worlds\, and a commitment to feminist realities.\n\nNilima Sheikh was born in New Delhi\, India in 1945. After graduating in History from Delhi University\, she studied Painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts\, MS University of Baroda between 1965 and 1971 under the mentorship of Professor KG Subramanyan. Her work explores historical art forms through the lens of personal subjectivities\, using a range of visual and literary sources. Working at different scales and on varied surfaces\, her contemporary practice critically engages a wide range of visual methods\, materials and styles.\n\nSheikh's solo exhibition 'Fractured Skies' at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York will be on view from September 27\, 2026 through June 13\, 2027. Recent exhibitions include 'The Imaginary Institution of India' at the Barbican Centre in London (2024)\, the Sharjah Biennial 15 titled 'Thinking Historically in the Present' (2023)\, the Dhaka Art Summit (2020)\, the Kochi-Muziris Biennale (2018)\, Documenta 14 in Kassel and Athens (2017)\, and 'Each night put Kashmir in your dreams' at the Art Institute of Chicago (2014). Sheikh's writings have been published widely\, she has created scenography for theatre\, and also illustrated books for children. \n\nThis event is made possible by the Shireen and Afzal Ahmad South Asian Arts Programming Fund.

DESCRIPTION:Edda L. Fields-Black is an American historian who is Professor of History and Director of the Dietrich College Humanities Center at Carnegie Mellon University. She won the 2025 Pulitzer Prize in History for her book COMBEE: Harriet Tubman\, the Combahee River Raid\, and Black Freedom during the Civil War. \n\nSummary\nHarriet Tubman's legendary life is widely known: escaping enslavement\, leading others to freedom via the Underground Railroad\, and tirelessly fighting for change. But a crucial chapter often overlooked is her daring Civil War service as a spy for the US Army\, detailed in Dr. Edda L.Fields-Black's groundbreaking book\, COMBEE: Harriet Tubman\, the Combahee River Raid\, and Black Freedom during the Civil War\, which won the 2025 Pulitzer Prize in History and the 2025Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize. A direct descendant of a soldier who fought in the raid\, Fields-Black unveils Tubman's command of spies\, scouts\, and pilots and intelligence gathering among freedom seekers\, which led to a raid that liberated 756 enslaved people from bondage on seven rice plantations. It was the largest slave rebellion in US history. Through unexamined documents\, she brings to life the Combahee River Raid and the untold stories of those freed\, their resilience\, and the lasting impact of Tubman's heroism.\nReception to follow

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:This Time *Is* Different: The Challenges—Old and New—of AI in Education
DESCRIPTION:The world's best artificial intelligence systems already exceed us in some ways\, and seem poised to surpass us cognitively in every way. Some argue that we are entering a singularity -- a moment when old rules are obsolete\; and new ones\, impossible to predict. Given that\, is there anything at all we can glean about the future of AI and learning? In this talk\, I will present a few things we know as a basis for conjecture and make some guesses based on three decades of work in technical AI\, societal impacts of digital technology\, and faculty governance at a large public university wrestling with this polarizing technology.\n\nKentaro Toyama is W. K. Kellogg Professor of Community Information at the University of Michigan School of Information\, where he researches digital technology's impact on society\, especially on its marginalized communities. Previously\, Kentaro taught at Ashesi University in Ghana and co-founded Microsoft Research India\, where he did research on the applications of digital technology to education and international socio-economic development.
