SUMMARY:Well-being:Climate Café: Building Community Resilience and Support
DESCRIPTION:Connect with fellow U-M community members in a safe space to pause\, connect\, and talk about their experiences regarding the environment and climate change\, a.k.a. Climate Café. In this small group\, we encourage participants to share their stories and discover connections between our experiences. During this Climate Week event\, participants will bridge gaps between climate emotions and sustainability action in our lives\, and learn how to care for ourselves and others. Light refreshments will be provided.\n\nWe wish to provide uninterrupted discussion time\, and make sure that everyone has a chance to speak and be heard. Due to the nature of this activity\, participants should arrive at the start time promptly. \n\nThe event is free and open to any U-M community member\, but registration is required. DESCRIPTION:Whether you are moving directly from your undergraduate degree or returning after some time away\, the first term of graduate school will challenge you to expand skills critical to your success. Two of the most essential skills needed to thrive are reading and writing. This four-part Rackham/Sweetland workshop series will showcase reading and writing practices for new graduate students that will inform your approaches to reading and writing through the course of your graduate career.\n\nThis workshop will introduce new graduate students to revising practices to advance their academic writing.\n\nThe most critical phase in the writing process is also the most mysterious and least taught. Revision is especially challenging for first-year graduate writers learning to write extended academic arguments. What do academic writers do when they revise their work? How does an early draft become a polished\, publishable article? This workshop will demystify the role of revision in academic writing – to advance and refine our good ideas! – and provide strategies to help you build quality revision into your writing practice. You will expand your revising practices and elevate your writing skills for graduate school.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Regulation Meets Public Infrastructure: Evidence from Environmental Water Policy in China.
DESCRIPTION:Pollution environmental infrastructure often requires collective investment and may be under-provided. We study whether environmental regulation can alleviate this coordination problem in the context of China's South-to-North Water Transfer Project\, which combines stringent water-pollution regulation with large-scale expansion of wastewater treatment plants. Using a spatial difference-in-differences design\, we find that the policy reduced industrial water pollution by 22% while generating only modest and temporary output losses. To understand this pattern\, we develop and estimate a spatial industry equilibrium model in which wastewater treatment plants are endogenous club goods requiring firms to coordinate on shared fixed costs. The model shows that wastewater treatment infrastructure offsets roughly 45% of the output losses associated with regulation while delivering nearly identical emissions reductions. Counterfactual analysis indicates that regulation accounts for roughly one-third of infrastructure construction and partially restores the efficient provision of pollution-control infrastructure by increasing firms' incentives to participate in shared public infrastructure.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistical Learning with Tensors: Compression\, Communication\, and Completion
DESCRIPTION:Many modern statistical and machine learning problems involve parameters that are intrinsically multiway\, including spatiotemporal arrays\, network data\, and weight tensors in large neural networks. Although such objects can always be vectorized\, doing so ignores multilinear structure and can lead to substantially different statistical and computational behavior. Weight tensors from large language models will serve as a motivating example\, illustrating how tensor methods can preserve structural information that is lost under naive vectorization. This talk develops a unified perspective on recent work in tensor-structured learning through three themes: compression\, communication\, and completion. Methodologically\, I will discuss low-rank tensor parameterizations\, rank selection through optimism-based risk analysis\, communication-efficient randomized tensor algorithms\, and structured sampling schemes for tensor completion. A recurring goal is to obtain nonasymptotic guarantees that connect tensor geometry\, statistical error\, computational cost\, and sample or communication complexity with formal guarantees.
