SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Three Ways of Queering Jewish and Israeli History
DESCRIPTION:MJSA Conference Keynote Lecture: “Three Ways of Queering Jewish and Israeli History”\nIris Rachamimov\nMonday\, September 16\, 6:15 - 7:15 PM\nMichigan Union\, Pendelton Room\n\nIn the past three decades\, queer-identified scholars have been producing studies that deal with Jewish queer subjectivities and sexual practices. Inspired by the rise of queer theory\, researchers the 1990s and the first decade of the 21st century laid the groundwork to “Jewish Queer Studies.” The addition of Trans\, Mizrahi and Israeli queer perspectives expanded the topic significantly in recent years with a plethora of publications in various languages. This lecture aims to reflect on the insights\, potentials and blind spots of three main approaches to queering Jewish and Israeli Studies: \n\n1) The examination of present and historical queer selfhoods. \n2) The development of activist scholarship aimed at generating politically useful knowledge \n3) The adoption of queer theoretical perspectives and terminology to analyze both queer and non-queer modes of life. \n\nThe lecture will attempt to show how queering Jewish Studies could be a very fruitful even for those scholars who do not necessarily identify as queer.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Book Talk: Megan Kimble
DESCRIPTION:Journalist Megan Kimble’s book City Limits: Infrastructure\, Inequality\, and the Future of America's Highways weaves together the origins of urban highways with the stories of ordinary people impacted by our highway-based transportation system. Kimble asks\, “What if\, instead of building our aging roads wider and higher\, we removed those highways altogether?” Kimble will share thoughts on how highway removal\, when done thoughtfully\, can bring new life to a divided city.\n\nIn City Limits\, journalist Megan Kimble tells the story of the origins of urban highways through case studies of fights against highway expansions in Austin\, Houston and Dallas. In Austin\, hundreds of families will lose child care if a preschool is demolished to expand Interstate 35. In Houston\, a young Black woman will lose her brand-new home to a new lane on Interstate 10—just blocks away from where a seventy-four-year-old nurse lost her home in the 1960s when that same highway was built. And in Dallas\, an urban planner has improbably found himself at the center of a national conversation about highway removal. The book also delves into highway removal projects in San Francisco and Rochester.\n\nJoin us for a presentation and discussion of this exciting and timely new book.\nSnacks will be provided.\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKER\nMegan Kimble is an investigative journalist and the author of Unprocessed. A former executive editor at The Texas Observer\, Kimble has written about housing\, transportation\, and urban development for The New York Times\, Texas Monthly\, The Guardian\, and Bloomberg CityLab.\n\nSponsors:\nUrban and Regional Planning Program\nB.S. in Urban Technology Program\nUrban Tech Student Organization\nUrbanism Club\nNeighborhood Institute
