SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:#fragilemasculinity: The Role of Threatened Masculinity and Anonymity in Men's Perpetration of Online Harassment
DESCRIPTION:Women navigate an unprecedented amount of gender-based harassment in online environments. The breadth of this aggression has received attention not only from academics\, but in popular press\, where it has been widely critiqued as unfortunate consequences of trolling culture. Largely absent from these conversations is the role of gender\, and in particular masculinity\, in sustaining harassment in digital contexts. In this talk\, I examine the connections between masculinity and sociotechnical affordances of computer-mediated communication in men's motivations to gender harass online. I propose that men's endorsement of online gender-based harassment is motivated by attempts to (re)affirm their masculinity following threats that question their manhood. Anonymity afforded by online communication can exacerbate these effects\, since the impression of being anonymous makes it easier to engage in harassment. Technology therefore enables gender harassment to thrive\, yet men's motivations to gender harass are grounded in performances of masculinity and maintenance of gender relations between (and among) women and men.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture: The Atacama Desert: Lessons from a Waterless World
DESCRIPTION:The Atacama Desert of Chile offers a window into how the surface of rocky planets evolve in the near absence of water. In my talk I am going to discuss how the lack of water influences physical and chemical weathering processes\, a perspective that helps in understanding surface landforms and soil mineralogy on other waterless and lifeless (?) worlds like Mars. The big surprise for me about the Atacama has been the fundamental role of seismicity\, something that took me years to recognize because of my origins in an aqueous world. We will look at some of the features of this seismic landscape\, including the truly bizarre rolling and rubbing boulder fields. \nChemical weathering patterns are also rather “extraterrestrial” in the Atacama\, and our studies explain why sulfates are abundant and carbonates negligible in the Atacama and on Mars. Because of its aridity and lack of life\, the Atacama missed out on the Great Carbonation Event (GCE) that overtook Earth starting in the early (oceans) to mid- (land) Paleozoic.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Tappan Talks
DESCRIPTION:Allison Martino and Elizabeth Rauh\, U-M History of Art doctoral candidates\, gives short talks followed by Q & A.\n\nAllison Martino\, \"Cloth\, Chairs\, and Key Chains:\nThe Re-Invention of Gye Nyame as a National Symbol of Ghana\"\n\nAdinkra is best known as a mourning cloth among the Akan of Ghana. Yet the role of adinkra in practices of remembrance extends far beyond funerals. Since at least the early 19th century\, the Akan have printed adinkra cloth with distinct graphic designs evoking multiple meanings related to proverbs\, historical narratives\, and moral beliefs. Joining visual and verbal arts\, adinkra is a dynamic form of communication that oscillates between expressing personal\, cultural\, and national identities. Ghanaians have innovated the form and meaning of adinkra over time to mark changing relationships to the past and envisions of future aspirations.\n\nThis presentation examines how Ghanaians have re-invented adinkra from a precolonial Akan cultural practice to represent national culture. Specifically\, it analyzes the shifting meanings and contexts of gye Nyame\, one of the most popular adinkra symbols. Often translated as “Except God\,” gye Nyame is ubiquitous in Ghana today – ranging from plastic chairs and key chains to churches\, currency notes\, and tourist souvenirs. In tracing one motif across time and space\, this talk reveals how Ghanaians have transformed gye Nyame and revitalized adinkra to resonate deeply in contemporary life.\n\nElizabeth Rauh\, \"The Colored Horizons of Karbala: Rafa Nasiri and Contemporary Printmaking in Late 1960s Iraq\"\n\nThis presentation looks to Rafa Nasiri’s (1940-2013) printmaking practice and its early experimentation with printed Arabic script as the locus from which he stimulated and historicized the contemporary graphic arts movement in Iraq. Although conversant in pan-Arab and international socialist realist strategies from his training in printmaking at the Institute of Fine Arts in Beijing (1958-1963)\, Nasiri’s work in the 1960s offers experiments with global abstract expressionism and local religious prints. The need for educational programs and publications on the arts of Arab printing led Nasiri to travel around Iraq gathering popular printed textiles. Nasiri collected block printed (hafir al-tarsh) black and white calligraphic banners\, which are carried in the streets during ‘Ashura and the holy month of Muharram\, when mass pilgrimage processions overtake Shi‘i Muslim shrines in the cities of Karbala and Najaf. He then cut these popular prints and their pious poetic verses into separate cartouches and adhered them directly onto his abstract works. \n\nDrawing upon communal rituals and public ceremonies moored Nasiri’s contemporary graphic art practice within Iraq’s historic printing technologies and social and religious practices. The collage-print series offered visual venerations of the Battle of Karbala (680 AD) as colorfully abstracted desert landscapes. Nestled within their references to that catastrophic landscape\, the Shi‘i readymade prints associated Nasiri’s works with the ancient battle and its religious performances of dissent against injustice and oppression. By imprinting his compositions with prefabricated calligraphic texts\, Nasiri elicited collective memories of Karbala and created a representational strategy counter to the new Baathist regime’s use of populist imagery. These works thus show how Rafa Nasiri marshaled Iraq’s historic printing technologies and social traditions to depict popular expressions of the metaphoric horizons of Karbala.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:NERS Colloquium: Jinsong Huang\, Ph.D.\, University of North Carolina
DESCRIPTION:Jinsong Huang\, Ph.D.\nDepartment of Applied Physical Sciences University of North Carolina\, Chapel Hill\n\nTitle: Halide Perovskites –Promising Materials for Radiation Detection beyond Solar Cells\n\nThe research of halide perovskite solar cells continues to boom with device energy conversion efficiency approaching that of single crystal silicon solar cells within less than six years. One critical step in understanding why hybrid perovskite solar cells work so well is to determine the influence of defects on photon to current conversion process. I will present the advance in understanding the optoelectronic properties\, unusual defect physics\, and influence of defects on critical properties such as carrier diffusion length\, charge recombination lifetime\, carrier mobility and ion migration of solution processed perovskite materials. The discovery of the extraordinary properties enables new application of halide perovskite in radiation detection beyond solar cells. The recent\n development of X-ray sensors\, imagers\, and gamma-ray spectrum detectors will be presented.\nJinsong Huang received his PhD degree in Material\nScience and Engineering from the University of California-\nLos Angeles in 2007. After working in Agiltron Inc. as a\nresearch scientist for two years\, he joined the University of\nNebraska-Lincoln in 2009 as an assistant professor in the\nDepartment of Mechanical and Materials Engineering\, and\nwas promoted to associate professor with tenure in 2014\,\nand professor in 2016. He joined the faculty in the\ndepartment of Applied Physical Sciences of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2017. His current research interests include solution processed electronic materials for applications in sensing\, energy and consumer electronics. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Pre-Doctoral Student - Katherine Gentry and Brian Linhares
DESCRIPTION:Katherine Gentry: \"Dynamic Interplay of Cytochrome P450 & Redox Partners\"\nAbstract: Cytochrome P450s (cytP450s) are a ubiquitous superfamily of enzymes that play a vital role in the metabolism of many substrates including over 70% of the drugs on the market. For each turn of its catalytic cycle\, cytP450 requires two electrons from its redox partners: Cytochrome P450 Reductase (CPR) and cytochrome b5 (cytb5). We are interested in how these proteins interact with each other specifically in the presence of lipid membrane mimetics and in the presence of various substrates. Here we use NMR spectroscopy and other biophysical tools to characterize the effect membrane has on the interaction between cytb5 and cytochrome c\, a model for cytP450. Our findings reveal the importance of studying these membrane proteins in a biologically relevant membrane mimetic both structurally and kinetically. We have also begun work on understanding how CPR and cytb5 compete for binding to cytP450 and unravelling the structural and dynamic basis for this competition. Our data reveals how substrates can help to modulate the interaction between the two redox partners and cytP450\, starting to define a complete picture of this trio of proteins. \n\nand \n\nBrian Linhares: “Fragment-based identification and optimization of inhibitors targeting BCL6-co-repressor interactions.”\nAbstract: Constitutively overexpressed B-Cell Lymphoma protein 6 (BCL6) is an oncogenic driver in various subtypes of Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma. In normal B-Cell physiology\, BCL6 governs cell development and regulates affinity antibody maturation\, through mediating the formation of transcription repression complexes. The N-terminal BTB domain of BCL6 (BCL6BTB) is responsible for dimerization and for recruitment of co-repressors\, notably HDAC3-binding partner Silencing Mediator of Retinoic acid and Thyroid hormone (SMRT)\, via the Lateral Groove (LG)\, a unique structural motif of the BCL6-SMRT protein-protein binding interface. This site has therefore been promoted for pharmacological intervention\, yet the development of potent\, selective inhibitors with favorable drug-like properties has largely eluded campaigns to target BCL6. I will report the identification and optimization of a novel inhibitor scaffold of BCL6 BTB. Fragment-based screening identified a hit that binds at the LG\, and structure determination of the fragment hit in complex with BCL6 BTB to high-resolution revealed the binding mode. Guided by the previously determined structure of BCL6BTB-SMRT BCL6 Binding Domain (SMRTBBD)\, structure-based drug design\, in tandem with biophysical approaches\, led an extensive investment in synthetic medicinal chemistry to target an adjacent pocket at the LG that is also occupied in BCL6BTB-SMRTBBD. Exploring substitutions to more fully occupy this pocket yielded small-molecule inhibitors with mid-micromolar affinity for BCL6BTB\, which represents a 100-fold improvement in potency from the hit. As an inhibitor scaffold\, our compounds may hold potential as chemical probes\, and in scaffold hopping to aid in further inhibitor development

SUMMARY:Other:Stereoselective Functionalization of Unsaturated Hydrocarbons
DESCRIPTION: The Tambar Group is interested in developing catalytic stereoselective reactions for the functionalization of unsaturated hydrocarbons. We have developed a catalytic enantioselective allylic amination of unactivated alkenes via a [2\,3]-rearrangement. In this method\, a diimido-sulfur reagent serves as the source of nitrogen\, and it reacts selectively with terminal alkenes through a hetero-ene reaction. The resulting ene adduct undergoes a Pd-catalyzed enantioselective [2\,3]-rearrangement to generate chiral amines in high enantiomeric excess. Our approach is conceptually distinct from other enantioselective allylic amination strategies. The synthetic utility of our process is being explored by converting simple and inexpensive terminal alkenes into functional materials\, such as the pharmaceutical drugs. Based on this chemistry\, we have developed a copper-catalyzed enantioselective allylic alkylation of unactivated alkenes to generate internal alkenes with high regioselectivity and E-selectivity. We have also discovered regioselective and diastereoselective aminoarylations and aminothiolations of 1\,3-dienes. These results represent a general strategy for functionalizing unsaturated hydrocarbons with aromatic\, aliphatic\, and vinyl Grignard reagents. As an extension of our approach to the catalytic allylic functionalization of unactivated terminal alkenes\, we recently pursued the more challenging problem of catalytic asymmetric allylic functionalization of internal alkenes. We have developed an enantioselective\, regioselective\, and E/Z selective allylic oxidation of unactivated internal alkenes via a catalytic asymmetric hetero-ene reaction with an imido-sulfur oxidant. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nUttam Tambar (UT Southwestern Medical Center)

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Flights of Fancy: Oil Painting
DESCRIPTION:Since Ellie Harold started painting in 2003\, she has primarily been a landscape artist\, painting Michigan barns and lake shore scenes in oil. In November 2016\, following a trip to Mexico\, birds unexpectedly started migrating to her canvases and an entirely new body of work began to take shape. The current exhibit\, Flights of Fancy\, features birds in colorful\, light-filled works. The birds represent the lightness she associates with qualities of joy\, hope\, healing and inspiration she sees as a source of personal well-being.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Photography into Fiber: ArtPrize Winner
DESCRIPTION:Steve and Ann Loveless both grew up in northwestern lower Michigan and love the nature and beauty of the outdoors. Steve is a fine art photographer\, and Ann is a textile artist. After exhibiting some of Ann’s textile designs inspired by Steve’s photography\, they had the idea to create works that morph a photograph into a textile. One aspect of the process is that it can trick the viewer into questioning what they are seeing and invite them to engage more with the work. Northwood Awakening\, a 25 by 5 foot piece that was the ArtPrize 2015 Public Vote Grand Prize winner\, will be on display.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents The Cut Ups: Paper Collage
DESCRIPTION:Laura Cavanagh is a Michigan native who graduated summa cum laude from the University of Michigan in 2011 with a BFA in Art & Design and a minor in Art History. Cavanagh’s work consists primarily of cut paper and mixed media. Working with these materials allows her to approach her work in much the same way a sculptor does: adding to and cutting away from. Cavanagh finds the artistic process to be deeply meditative. Cavanagh lives and has her studio in a historic home in downtown Rochester\, Michigan.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Under Covers: Encaustic & Mixed Media
DESCRIPTION:Cat Crotchett’s current work combines elements of eastern and western cultural patterns in fragments that together form something different than their individual parts. These images represent an intersection of information as well as ideas of cultural appropriation\, assimilation\, fragmentation and alteration. Crotchett uses wax because it is relevant to both eastern and early western artistic cultures. A professional artist for over 30 years\, Crotchett has exhibited nationally and internationally. She is a professor at Western Michigan University and lives in Kalamazoo\, Michigan.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents When Pigs Fly: Oil Painting
DESCRIPTION:Professional artist and instructor Gregory Potter believes that anyone can develop artistic skill if they put the work into it. Potter’s teaching helps with that\, but he also shows his paintings in art fairs\, galleries and even Army barrack walls\, anywhere people enjoy art and laughing out loud. A flightless bird\, his flamingo isn’t deep or subversive\, but it does have a top hat and is riding on the back of a zebra that is standing in a nest powered by a propeller. Nothing unusual for a man who served four tours in the Middle East. Working in his home gallery in Franklin\, Indiana\, he is amused as viewers sometimes see his animals as “above all the B.S.” or “leaving without knowing where [they’re] going.”

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Reverberations of Rebellion: 1967 in Detroit and Ann Arbor
DESCRIPTION:The 1967 Detroit rebellion was a pivotal event in the history of the Motor City. While Ann Arbor may seem far removed from Detroit\, the themes of 1967—housing segregation\, media bias\, student activism\, and police violence—resonated here as well. \n\nThis exhibit\, on display in the Hatcher Graduate Library North lobby through September 15\, 2017\, highlights the extensive archival resources of the Bentley Historical Library and the U-M Library’s Labadie Collection. These materials place the rebellion in the context of 1960s activism against racism and inequality in Detroit and Ann Arbor\, and illustrate the significance and range of press coverage.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Reforming the Word: Martin Luther in Context
DESCRIPTION:Highlighting manuscripts and early printed books from the Special Collections Library\, the exhibit commemorates the 500th anniversary of a pivotal transformation in world history. In 1517\, Martin Luther\, a professor of theology and a monk\, published his scathing critique of indulgences\, a church practice that allowed Christians to buy off time from suffering for one’s sins in the afterlife.\n\nIssued in the provincial town of Wittenberg\, Luther's call for academic debate and reform unleashed a series of events that led to the break-up of Latin Christianity. The Reformations that followed forever altered the lives of those in early modern Europe and beyond.\n\nThe late medieval German lands teemed with innovation. Novel forms of piety emerged\, the demand for practical learning grew\, more universities competed for students\, and wealth from both trade and mining transformed social relations. The dissemination of texts and ideas on an industrial scale via the printing press reshaped communication\, knowledge\, and belief. In this context\, reform—the renewal of a lost standard of the past in the present—became a battle-cry for religious\, economic\, and political change.\n\nAudubon Room hours: Monday-Friday 8:30am-6:00pm\, Saturday 10:00am-6:00pm\, Sunday 1:00-6:00pm

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Cosmogonic Tattoos
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the University’s Bicentennial in 2017\, artist and professor Jim Cogswell has been invited by the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology and the University of Michigan Museum of Art to create a set of public window installations in response to the objects in their collections. Titled Cosmogonic Tattoos\, his project will use adhesive vinyl images applied in saturated colors to windows in the two buildings\, highlighting the role of these museums in the life of our campus community. Through close examination of objects separated from us by deep chronological and cultural divides\, imaginatively transformed within our campus context\, this project celebrates the power of architecture\, ornament\, and material objects to shape knowledge\, historical memory\, and cultural identity. \n\nLook for displays in the UMMA from April 22-Dec. 3\, the exterior of the Kelsey Museum from June 2-Dec. 17\, and in the interior special exhibition space of the Kelsey Museum from June 2-Sept. 10.\n\nFor information on-the-go about this event and all other Bicentennial happenings\, download our free mobile app: http://guidebook.com/g/umich200.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Forever Unfinished: Making and Remaking a Public University
DESCRIPTION:The University of Michigan was founded in 1817 as a public institution\, a concept for which there were few models. What makes a university public? What should it look like? Whom should it serve? Who should have access to its resources\, and where should those resources come from?\n\nThis exhibit explores how students\, faculty\, staff\, politicians\, and citizens have attempted to answer these questions. These stories invite us to imagine U-M's future as a public university based on what we know about its past.\n\nExhibit team: Jonathan Farr\, Nora Krinitsky\, Michelle McClellan\, Gregory Parker\, Emily Price\, Kate Silbert\n\nThis LSA Bicentennial Theme Semester exhibit is presented with support from the College of Literature\, Science\, and the Arts and the University of Michigan Bicentennial Office. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Saturday Morning Physics | The Arctic and the Tropics: Worlds Apart\, Both Amplifying Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:(Part of the Bicentennial LSA Theme Semester Symposium MC²: Michigan & the Climate Crisis)\nHumans have rapidly changed our Earth's climate\, well beyond the natural variations recorded over at least the last million years. This perturbation has reached the point where other parts of the natural system are poised to change their behavior through accelerating feedbacks. Melting of permafrost in the Arctic and deforestation of forests and agroforestry systems in the tropics are two such important examples. These feedbacks are poorly understood\, but have the potential to alter the globe as we know it and critically test humanity's resolve for mitigation and ability to adapt.

DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the University of Michigan’s Bicentennial in 2017\, artist and distinguished U–M art professor Jim Cogswell has been invited to create a series of public window installations in response to the holdings of the University of Michigan Museum of Art and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. For this visionary project\, the artist will adhere a procession of vivid images to the glass walls of the museums in a rhythmically evocative narrative\, based on reassembled fragments from a diverse range of artworks in both museums’ permanent collections. The juxtaposed images will address our shared histories and experiences while connecting the viewer to the origins and meaning of objects and their power to shape knowledge\, memory\, and identity. By leveraging the buildings’ unique architecture\, the artist expands our understanding of a museum as a cultural repository and highlights the significant role of these institutions in the life of the campus community.\nCosmogonic Tattoos is on view at UMMA April 22 through December 3\, 2017 and at the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology from June 2 through December 17\, 2017.\nLead support for Cosmogonic Tattoos is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gloss: Modeling Beauty
DESCRIPTION:Focusing on the prominent role of women as the subject of photography\, GLOSS: Modeling Beauty explores the shifting ideals of female beauty that pervade European and American visual culture from the 1920s to today. The exhibition features images of sleek and poised female models and celebrities destined for the glossy pages of fashion magazines and catalogs by leading photographers such as Edward Steichen\, Philippe Halsman\, Helmut Newton\, Andy Warhol\, and Guy Bourdin. Outside of commercial advertising practice\, documentary photographers Elliott Erwitt\, Joel Meyerowitz\, and Ralph Gibson portray candid images of fashionable women on city streets and mannequins in shop windows\, resulting in intriguing juxtapositions of haute couture and everyday life. And\nartists James Van Der Zee\, Eduardo Paolozzi\, and Nikki S. Lee employ the visual strategies of traditional fashion photography\, while offering alternative narratives to mainstream notions of female beauty.\n\nLead support for Gloss: Modeling Beauty is provided by Bank of America and Merrill Lynch. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Moving Image: Portraiture
DESCRIPTION:Moving Image: Portraiture presents a contemporary spin on traditional notions of portraiture. In the video Towards An Architect\, Hannu Karjalainen portrays a fictional architect who is experiencing the response of people living in the structures he designed. Daniel Rozin’s Mirror No. 10 is driven by software\, written by the artist\, that generates a real-time reflection of the environment the screen is displayed in—specifically a live sketch of the viewer approaching the frame. Mesocosm (Northumberland\, UK) is an algorithmic work by Marina Zurkow that depicts the passage of time on the moors of Northeast England.\n\nMoving Image: Portraiture is the third of three exhibitions drawn from the collection of the Borusan Contemporary\, Istanbul\, which since 2011 has been focused on media arts. The works in this series address both formal concerns and conceptual topics\; many represent traditional categories such as portraiture and landscape that find new resonance when explored through the strategies of dynamic technology.\n\nLead support for Moving Image: Portraiture is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment and the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities and Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Power Contained: The Art of Authority in Central and West Africa
DESCRIPTION:Before colonization\, complex hierarchical societies flourished in Central and West Africa. At their summits were a select few—kings and chiefs whose authority was derived from their direct connection to powerful ancestors and predecessors. These rulers were wrapped in expensive textiles or costly furs\, and covered in beads and precious metals\, materials that not only signaled their extraordinary status\, but were also intended to safely contain the great power they wielded. The famous minkisi (meaning “power figure”) sculptures of Central Africa were similarly activated through the addition of charged materials. Textiles\, animal skin\, metal\, and beads allowed the lifeless wooden carvings to be activated by local spiritual leaders in order to communicate with the realm of the ancestors and spirits. This exhibition explores the parallels between the adornment of the king’s physical body and minkisi. Drawing on works from UMMA’s collection and several loans\, the exhibition demonstrates how authority was expressed and power contained across a range of historical cultures in Nigeria\, Ghana\, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Cameroon.\n\nLead support for Power Contained: The Art of Authority in Central and West Africa is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost and the African Studies Center.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Victors for Art: Michigan's Alumni Collectors—Part II: Abstraction
DESCRIPTION:Commemorating the University of Michigan’s 2017 Bicentennial\, Victors for Art: Michigan’s Alumni Collectors celebrates the deep impact of Michigan alumni in the global art world. \n\nThis two-part exhibition presents works collected by a diverse group of alumni that represent the breadth of the University and over seventy years of graduating classes. Part II: Abstraction\, on view in the A. Alfred Taubman Gallery July 1 through October 29\, showcases modern and contemporary art by Pablo Picasso\, Alberto Giacometti\,\nLouise Nevelson\, Christo\, Lorna Simpson\, José Parlá\, and Do Ho Su\, among others. It also features a fifth-century Korean roof end tile and an Amish quilt\, as well as a work by an Inuit master—thus inviting visitors to explore the pleasures of abstraction across a wide range of media\, eras\, and genres. UMMA extends Part II: Abstraction into the Irving Stenn\, Jr. Family Gallery from August 19 through November 26\, 2017\, with the site-specific installation of Random International’s LED-light and motion-sensing dynamic sculpture\, Swarm Study / II. Victors for Art offers an unprecedented opportunity to view art that may have never been publicly displayed otherwise—and most certainly\, not all together. For visitors\, and especially for future Michigan alumni\, Victors for Art illuminates the shared passion for art fostered by the Michigan experience.\n\nThis exhibition was organized by Joseph Rosa\, Guest Curator\, in collaboration with Laura De Becker\, Helmut & Candis Stern Associate Curator of African Art\, Jennifer Friess\, Assistant Curator of Photography\, Lehti Mairike Keelman\, Assistant Curator of Western Art\, and Natsu Oyobe\, Curator of Asian Art.\n\nLead support for Victors for Art: Michigan's Alumni Collectors is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, the University of Michigan Office of the President\, the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts\, and the University of Michigan Bicentennial Office.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Teach Out Series- Fake News\, Facts\, and Alternative Facts
DESCRIPTION:How can you distinguish credible information from “fake news”? Reliable information is at the heart of what makes an effective democracy\, yet many people find it harder to differentiate good journalism from propaganda. Increasingly\, inaccurate information is shared on Facebook and echoed by a growing number of explicitly partisan news outlets. This becomes more problematic because people have a tendency to accept agreeable messages over challenging claims\, even if the former are less objectively credible. In this teach-out\, we examine the processes that generate both accurate and inaccurate news stories\, and that lead people to believe those stories. We then provide a series of tools that ordinary citizens can use to tell fact from fiction.\n\nA Teach-Out is:\n\n-an event – it takes place over a fixed\, short period of time\n\n-an opportunity – it is open for free participation to everyone around the world\n\n-a community – it will be joined by a large number of diverse individuals\n\n-a conversation – an opportunity to give and take ideas and information from people\n\nThe University of Michigan Teach-Out Series provides just-in-time community learning events for participants around the world to come together in conversation with the U-M campus community\, including faculty experts. The U-M Teach-Out Series is part of our deep commitment to engage the public in exploring and understanding the problems\, events\, and phenomena most important to society.\n\nTeach-Outs are short learning experiences\, each focused on a specific current issue. Attendees will come together over a few days not only to learn about a subject or event but also to gain skills. Teach-Outs are open to the world and are designed to bring together individuals with wide-ranging perspectives in respectful and deep conversation. These events are an opportunity for diverse learners and a multitude of experts to come together to ask questions of one another and explore new solutions to the pressing concerns of our global community. Come\, join the conversation!\n\nFind new opportunities at teach-out.org.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Journey in a Day: 200 Years of Student Life at the University of Michigan
DESCRIPTION:U-M students have teamed up to create this sweeping exhibition\, surveying 200 years of daily rituals\, social life\, challenges\, victories\, and the roles U-M students have played in historic events. \"The Journey in a Day\" exhibition includes nearly 50 historic objects and dozens of photos. The exhibition includes a recreation of a Martha Cook Residence Hall room\, circa 1917\, amongst the first on campus to house women. A poster kiosk occupies the middle of one room in the Museum\, plastered with fliers and posters from across time. A reproduction of student scrapbooks brings visitors in direct contact with individuals at various times throughout history. From the morning ritual of reading the Michigan Daily\, to student reaction and involvement in U.S. wars\, from the mandates and tweets of student organizations\, to a survey of infamous late night Ann Arbor hot spots\, this is a wide ranging exhibition with many interesting\, entertaining and illuminating stories to tell.\n\nDesigned by U-M students participating in MUSEUMS 498\, in the History of Art Department\, in collaboration with the U-M Bicentennial Office\, and the Washtenaw County Historical Society.\n\nFor information on-the-go about this event and all other Bicentennial happenings\, download our mobile app: http://guidebook.com/g/umich200.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Unfinished Conversation: Encoding/Decoding
DESCRIPTION:On view from September 8-October 14\, 2017 in the Stamps Gallery (201 S. Division St.\, Ann Arbor)\, The Unfinished Conversation: Encoding/Decoding is a group exhibition including image and video work by Terry Adkins\, John Akomfrah\, Shelagh Keeley\, and Zineb Sedira. There will be an exhibition reception on Friday\, September 8 from 6-8 pm. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.\n\nCo-curated by Gaëtane Verna\, Director of The Power Plant\, and Mark Sealy\, The Unfinished Conversation is grounded in the work of cultural theorist Stuart Hall (1932-2014)\, who devoted his life to studying the interweaving threads of culture\, power\, politics\, and history. \n\nTaking Hall’s essay Encoding and Decoding in the Television Discourse as a point of departure\, viewers will be invited to think about how meaning is constructed\; how it is systematically distorted by audience reception\; and how it can be detached and drained of its original intent to produce specific or slanted narratives. Hall’s interdisciplinary approach drew on literary theory\, linguistics\, and cultural anthropology in order to analyse and articulate the relationship between history\, culture\, popular media\, cold war politics\, gender\, and ethnicity.\n\nBy presenting the work of artists who bring into play time\, memory\, and archives so as to construct new readings of the past\, the exhibition will lay emphasis on the idea that the “visual” is an assimilatory process continuously at work in the construction of cultural\, political\, personal\, and national identities.\n\nCo-curators Gaëtane Verna and Mark Sealy state that it is their curatorial intention to build a multiple moving/still/audio archive\, an image map\, a visual vehicle that will ferry the audience across the choppy waters of memory\, images\, and politics to an undeterminable\, obscure\, and un-chartable destination\, where people often meet with a fatal end. The exhibition aims to take viewers on a journey in time\, to bring them to encounter images\, which act as both objects of art and ideas in flux\, circulating in and out of the archive through the corridors of cultural re-construction.\n\nThis image map will be drawn by the work of Terry Adkins\, John Akomfrah\, Shelagh Keeley and Zineb Sedira\, four artists whose practice is devoted primarily to commenting on recent socio-political events and situations and relating them to the not so distant past in order to help us understand the world we live in.\n\nBy stimulating our personal and collective memory\, these works will show us how history agitates and causes anxiety in our personal lives and in the political realm as they will reveal the fact that national identity is not an essence or a state of being\, but a “becoming\,” a process whereby subjectivities are formed in the interstices between such binary oppositions as us/them\, black/white\, or native/foreigner\, and that it is in those in-between spaces that marginalized people are the agents and subjects of many possible futures\, imagined or real.\n\nThe thread that connects all these art works is the artist’s involvement with the significant social issues confronting humanity today and their profound desire to push formal boundaries in order to tackle them.\n\nThe Unfinished Conversation: Encoding/Decoding is organized and circulated by The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery\, Toronto in partnership with Autograph ABP\, London. The exhibition is co-curated by Gaëtane Verna\, Director\, The Power Plant and Mark Sealy\, Director\, Autograph ABP.\n\nPhoto by Toni Hafkenscheid.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Vital Signs for a New America
DESCRIPTION:On view from September 8-October 14\, 2017 in the Stamps Gallery (201 S. Division St.\, Ann Arbor)\, Vital Signs for a New America is a group exhibition including work by Dylan Miner\, Sheryl Oring\, and the performance collective The Hinterlands. There will be an exhibition reception on Friday\, September 8 from 6-8 pm. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\, Vital Signs for a New America uses a range of meaningful and compelling of community-engaged approaches to invite the public to join Miner\, Oring\, and The Hinterlands in speaking out and sharing stories\; listening and re-learning\; and remembering the past to imagine new possibilities for the future.\n\nActive public engagement is at the heart of Vital Signs for a New America. Each work on view in this group exhibition offers opportunities to interact directly with the artists and their art. As part of the exhibition programming\, the gallery will become a common space for storytelling and tea drinking with Dylan Miner\; a bustling executive assistant’s office with Sheryl Oring\; and a tactile\, expansive personal archive with the performance collective The Hinterlands. Vital Signs invites the public to speak out\, listen\, and imagine new models for inclusive futures.\n\nDylan Miner: Elders Say We Don’t Visit Anymore\nSaturdays\, September 9-October 14\, 1-3 pm\n\nDylan Miner\, Director of American Indian and Indigenous Studies at Michigan State University\, is an artist\, activist\, and scholar. Miner identifies as a Wiisaakodewinini (Métis)\, the Ojibwe designation for a Native male of mixed ancestry. While conducting an oral history project with retired Anishinaabe autoworkers\, elders shared the idea that “we don’t visit as much as we used to” due to the limitations of urbanizations\, wage labor\, and settler colonialism to name a few. In response\, Miner was inspired to explore the methodology of visiting with an art gallery or museum context. Elders Say We Don’t Visit Anymore is a creative action where the public is invited to share tea and conversation with the artist\, creating new friendships and maintaining social relationships within a specific time and place.\n\nSheryl Oring: I Wish to Say \nFriday\, September 8\, 5-6.30 pm and 7-8 pm (two engagements)\nFridays\, September 15-October 13\, 5-7 pm\n\nNationally renowned artist Sheryl Oring’s belief in the value of free expression guaranteed by the American constitution propelled her to initiate I Wish to Say (2004-ongoing)\, a public platform that invites people to voice their concerns about the state-of-affairs in the country to the President of America. For this project\, Oring sets up a portable public office — complete with a manual typewriter — and invites viewers to dictate postcards to the President of the United States\, prompting with a simple phrase: “Do you have a message for the president?” Over the last decade\, Oring has toured this project across the country and more than 3\,000 postcards have been mailed to the White House. Taking place for the first time in Michigan\, Oring will be working with students and volunteers at the Stamps Gallery and in the city of Ann Arbor to spark dialogues not just among artists and academics but also among the diverse public of Ann Arbor on their notes to the President.\n\nThe Hinterlands: The Radicalization Process Papers \nTuesday\, October 3\, 6-7.30pm: History is a Living Weapon (performance)\n\nThe Hinterlands delve into the past to remember and re-learn the cultural memories and collective histories of Detroit and Ann Arbor. A collection of boxes is discovered in the basement of a house on the border of Detroit and Hamtramck. In them\, a rich personal archive of publication clippings\, which appear to chronicle radical U.S. histories of the 60s and 70s. Using the archive as a performative platform\, the artists invite audiences to engage with the materials contained in the boxes that blur the boundaries between fact and fiction\, real and imagined. The ephemera and memorabilia in the The Radicalization Process Papers takes audiences on a journey that navigates layers of historical accounts\, art\, politics\, and cultural artifacts and asks audiences to examine the assumptions of freedom and democracy in popular American culture. Created and compiled by The Hinterlands in collaboration with historian and poet Casey Rocheteau and designer Ben Gaydos.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Cosmogonic Tattoos

Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan Institute for Research on Women and Gender.

Additional support provided by the Department of History and the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies.

DESCRIPTION:UMMA docents will guide visitors through the galleries on tours as diverse as their interests and areas of expertise. Each docent plans a theme and includes a variety of styles and media to illuminate his or her ideas. Themes may be repeated but each docent's approach and choice of objects is unique.\n\nThis week's theme is \"The Staring Eyes.\" Although we visit art museums to look at art\, sometimes it looks back at us. SUMMARY:Well-being:FREE 4-Session Mindfulness Class
DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION OPEN FOR ALL STUDENTS!\nSundays from 3:45 - 5:00pm (9/24\, 10/1\, 10/8\, 10/22)\n@ Central Student Government Chambers (Michigan Union\, 3rd Floor)\n\nDuring this 4-session class you will be introduced to the practice of mindfulness and learn several skills\, including meditation\, for managing stress and enriching your life. Mindfulness is about developing the ability to be fully attentive to all the moments of your life\, reducing the amount of time you spend worrying about the future or fretting about the past. An important aspect of mindfulness is developing a non-judgmental\, accepting\, even curious\, attitude about your moment-to-moment experience. The more you develop this attitude\, the less you will feel overwhelmed by changes and challenges in your life.\n\nKoru is designed to introduce you to the practice of mindfulness and get you well on your way to developing this important skill. Like learning any new skill\, it takes practice to get comfortable with mindfulness. We invite you to devote yourself to the study and practice of mindfulness over the next four weeks\, and we challenge you to stay curious about what evolves for you as you persistently and patiently practice living mindfully. We also have a free mobile app to track meditation practices for this course!\n\nRegister today before the seats are filled! \n\nFor any questions\, please contact Hitomi Katsumi at hkat@umich.edu.

SUMMARY:Other:Jeffrey Eugenides w/Claire Vaye Watkins
DESCRIPTION:Literati is thrilled to welcome Jeffrey Eugenides to Ann Arbor in support of the Pulitzer Prize winning author's first short story collection\, Fresh Complaint. Following the reading\, Jeffrey will be joined by Guggenheim award winning author and Helen Zell Writers' Program faculty member Claire Vaye Watkins. A Q&A and signing will follow. \n\nJeffrey Eugenides's bestselling novels have shown him to be an astute observer of the crises of adolescence\, self-discovery\, family love\, and what it means to be American in our times. The stories in Fresh Complaint explore equally rich--and intriguing--territory. Ranging from the bitingly reproductive antics of \"Baster\" to the dreamy\, moving account of a young travelers search for enlightenment in \"Air Mail\" (selected by Annie Proulx for Best American Short Stories)\, this collection presents characters in the midst of personal and national emergencies. We meet a failed poet who\, envious of other peoples wealth during the real-estate bubble\, becomes an embezzler\; a clavichordist whose dreams of art founder under the obligations of marriage and fatherhood\; and\, in \"Fresh Complaint\,\" a high school student whose wish to escape the strictures of her immigrant family lead her to a drastic decision that upends the life of a middle-aged British physicist. Narratively compelling\, beautifully written\, and packed with a density of ideas despite their fluid grace\, these stories chart the development and maturation of a major American writer.

Additional support provided by the Department of History and the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Majestic | Dream: A Selection of Color Woodcuts
DESCRIPTION:The Confucius Institute at U-M proudly presents “Majestic | Dream\,” a solo exhibition by Endi Poskovic\, Professor of Art at the Penny W. Stamps School of Arts and Design\, University of Michigan. Professor Poskovic’s creative practice considers a range of technologies as a way to explore certain characteristics of printed image: translation\, multiplicity\, seriality. Through his works\, Professor Poskovic seeks to construct representations that suggest broader themes of displacement\, exile\, memory and reconciliation. A frequent visitor to China\, Endi Poskovic\, Professor of Art at the University of Michigan Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design\, is a great admirer of Chinese and Asian visual and material arts. Poskovic’s work in woodblock relief printmedia reflects his deep fascination and a lasting involvement with Chinese intellectual and creative communities. To celebrate this long and fruitful engagement as a bridge between artistic China and the University of Michigan\, CIUM presents this exhibition.\n\nOver the course of years\, Poskovic has produced several major series of multi-plate color woodcut prints utilizing both established and non-traditional approaches frequently combining analog carving methods with laser engraving from bit-map data files. For this Confucius Institute sponsored exhibition\, Poskovic presents an intimate selection of color woodcuts from two series of works\, “Majestic” and “Dream”\, focusing on landscape imagery informed by real and imaginary topographies\, including several works which are based on his sketches drawn in China. Merging visual image with text\, Poskovic’s “Majestic Series” shifts the reading of the woodcut by providing an unexpected new context and forcing the viewer to continually reinterpret. In “Dream Series”\, Poskovic explores primitive strategies of early cinema to investigate personal and social histories\, shifting cultural identities\, environmental transformation\, migration and alienation.\n\nEndi Poskovic was educated in Yugoslavia\, Norway\, and the United States. His graphic works have been exhibited worldwide and have brought him many notable awards and honors\, including grants and fellowships from the Guggenheim Memorial Foundation\, the United States Fulbright Commission\, the Rockefeller Foundation\, the Pollock-Krasner Foundation\, the Norwegian Government\, the Camargo Foundation\, the Flemish Ministry of Culture\, the New York State Council on the Arts\, and the Art Matters Foundation\, among others. Museum collections which hold works by the artist include the Philadelphia Museum of Art\, the Harvard University Fogg Art Museum\, Detroit Institute of Arts\, Jincheon Art Museum\, South Korea and others.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Possession\, pop-up exhibition by Jaye Schlesinger
DESCRIPTION:Possession evolved in response to Ann Arbor artist Jaye Schlesinger’s interest in mindfulness and minimalism and the role they play in personal well being. After disposing (selling\, recycling\, giving away) of everything that no longer served to enrich her life\, Schlesinger decided to merge this exercise with her art practice and depicted all of her remaining possessions in small oil paintings\, 380 in total. The paintings depict objects of functionality and ones of beauty\, eliciting contemplation and conversation about the ‘stuff’ we choose to live with.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Waiting for the Extraordinary installation by Mark Dion
DESCRIPTION:About the installation: As part of the Institute for the Humanities 2017-18 Year of Archives and Futures\, and in celebration of the U-M Bicentennial\, the Institute for the Humanities presents a new iteration of Mark Dion’s Waiting for the Extraordinary\, which was commissioned and first exhibited here in 2011. Inspired by the academic classifications invented by 19th-century Michigan Chief Justice Augustus B. Woodward\, this new\, architecturally scaled installation serves as an archive of the original\, and presents a single room with thirteen plastic sculptures\, each representing one of Woodward’s professorships. As viewers peer into the space and encounter these illuminated objects—reproduced using 3D imaging technology from original objects Dion found in departments and collections across the University of Michigan—they confront questions about the distinction between the rational and subjective in our construction of knowledge\, as well as role of the museum and institutions that continue to determine it.\n\nAbout the artist: Mark Dion’s work examines the ways in which dominant ideologies and public institutions shape our understanding of history\, knowledge\, and the natural world. “The job of the artist\,” he says\, “is to go against the grain of dominant culture\, to challenge perception and convention.” Appropriating archaeological\, field ecology\, and other scientific methods of collecting\, ordering\, and exhibiting objects\, Dion creates works that question the distinctions between ‘objective’ (‘rational’) scientific methods and ‘subjective’ (‘irrational’) influences. Mark Dion questions the objectivity and authoritative role of the scientific voice in contemporary society\, tracking how pseudo-science\, social agendas\, and ideology creep into public discourse and knowledge production.\n\nImage: Mark DION\nWaiting for the\nExtraordinary\n2013\nmixed media\n96 x 61 x 122\ninches\; 243.8 x\n154.9 x 309.9 cm\nCourtesy the artist\nand Tanya Bonakdar\nGallery\, New York

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Cuts Pt 1: Responding to Student Climate Concerns
DESCRIPTION:Though the University of Michigan aspires to cultivate a climate that is welcoming to the members of its diverse student\, faculty\, and staff bodies\, we know that the lived experiences of many in our communities don't always align with these aspirations. Join the CRLT Players for Cuts: Responding to Student Climate Concerns\, a two-session series\, that invites participants to think together about the many forces that can shape campus climate both positively and negatively. Built around a series of vignettes that explore students' experiences of marginalization\, each session offers a space where participants can practice engaging in difficult conversations about and across differences in identity while also reflecting on their personal responsibilities to cultivating inclusive and equitable spaces within and outside of the classroom. \n\nIn the first session\, participants will:\n\n - Analyze a series of bias incidents from the perspective of a targeted student\n\n - Reflect on their own experiences of marginalizing behavior-- as target\, aggressor\, or bystander\n\n - Explore strategies for intervening effectively when they observe marginalizing behavior and for responding productively when a concern about their own behavior is raised\n\nPre-registration is required at https://secure.rackham.umich.edu/wsEvents/wsreg.php?ws_id=438.

Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan Institute for Research on Women and Gender.
