DESCRIPTION:This symposium celebrates the forthcoming 38-chapter volume The Oxford Handbook of Judaism and Film edited by Olga Gershenson. This volume offers the first comprehensive survey of the flourishing interdisciplinary field\, while challenging the geographic and conceptual boundaries of Jewish cinema. For too long\, the field has circled around a narrow set of places and stories\, about immigration\, assimilation\, antisemitism\, and the Holocaust. This Handbook proposes a broader\, more capacious understanding of Jewish film—one that moves past the assumption that Jewishness on screen must be mimetic\, historical\, or tied to the US\, Europe\, and Israel. Highlighting new research on Jews on and off screen in India\, Ethiopia\, Turkey\, Mexico\, the Arab world\, and beyond\, the contributions show how Jewishness operates as a global interpretive mode rather than a fixed set of themes. This expanded lens reveals how Jewish frames of thinking\, cultural practices\, and historical experiences structure filmmaking and spectatorship across wildly diverse geographies and contexts. The result challenges old stereotypes and opens up a bigger\, more complex world of Jewish film.\n\nThis symposium is an experimental and experiential format. One focus of our research is on developing population genetic theory that lets us predict patterns of diversity and genetic structure under varying models of demography and selection. Another focus is on turning that theory into computational tools to compare model predictions to observations from natural populations. Finally\, we have a strong interest in inferring (mostly) human evolutionary history from genetic data\, including both ancient history and population structure as well as more recent migrations\, movements\, and dynamics.

DESCRIPTION:Betty Jahateh - Masters Thesis Final Presentation\nBetween Tides and Time: Integrating Landsat and SAR to Quantify Species-Level Structural Differentiation and Climate-Driven Dynamics in Gambian Mangroves\n\nMangrove ecosystems provide critical coastal protection\, carbon sequestration\, and fisheries support\, yet they are increasingly vulnerable to climate variability and anthropogenic pressures. However\, most existing mangrove monitoring in West Africa focuses on overall extent rather than species composition\, which leaves a critical gap in species-level mapping that can be addressed using remote sensing techniques capable of distinguishing spectral differences among mangrove species. This study integrates Landsat optical time series\, Sentinel-1 SAR\, elevation metrics\, canopy height\, and field observations to quantify internal mangrove heterogeneity and incorporates SWOT water levels and GLDAS and GPM precipitation data to assess seasonal and annual climate dynamics in The Gambia. Field validation across 26 sites in the North Bank and Lower River Region linked these classes to ecologically meaningful assemblages. We found that classes differed consistently in spectral indices\, SAR backscatter\,\ncanopy height\, and distance to water\, which shows hydrological and tidal zonation. Time-series analysis showed an overall greening trend with some class-level separation through time. Long-term modeled rainfall records (1950-2025) revealed pronounced interannual variability\, with dry conditions beginning in the late\n1960s and continuing through the mid 1990s\, leading to mangrove mortality as documented in other studies.\n\n--\n\nYinjiao Zhong - EARTH-CLASP Researcher\nInland Lake Wind Speed Retrieval: Integration of SWOT and CYGNSS Observations via Cluster-Specific Random Forest Models\n\nMeasuring wind speeds over small inland lakes is difficult due to complex shorelines and low wave heights. This study combines CYGNSS (L-band) and SWOT (Ka-band) satellite data to improve the accuracy of wind speed retrievals over inland lakes. We grouped large and moderate-sized lakes in North America and Asia into 14 categories using K-means clustering based on the features such as area and depth to develop specific geophysical function models (GMFs) for each cluster and validating them with ERA5 data (2023-2025). This study provides essential data for understanding lake energy balances and regional climate.\n\n--\n\nMd Ehsan Alam - EARTH-Taubman Research\nMarsh\, Map\, Margin: Designing Across Disciplines in Deltaic Bangladesh\n\nSecondary cities are among the world's fastest-growing urban areas\, often at the cost of hydrological precarity. This talk examines what happens when urban design enters into conversation with hydrology. Developed jointly between Taubman College and the Hydrology\, Landuse and Climate Change (HYLUCC) Lab at the University of Michigan\, this brief thesis presentation traces how aspirational urbanity encroaches upon perennial floodplains\; displacing aquatic systems\, marginalizing communities\, and erasing vernacular practices. The thesis spans remote sensing\, vernacular knowledge systems\, filmmaking\, and design speculation. DESCRIPTION:Kathy Beck performs on the Charles Baird Carillon\, an instrument of 53 bronze bells located inside the Burton Memorial Tower. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8)\, and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Hearing protection earmuffs are provided for visitors. Be prepared to walk on ice and snow in the bell chamber during winter. Built in 1936\, the Charles Baird Carillon is not ADA accessible. Visitors with mobility concerns are invited to visit the Lurie Carillon.

DESCRIPTION:Thomas Paine’s “Common Sense” was one of the most influential works of the American Revolution. The first edition was published on January 10\, 1776\, with an initial print run of just 1\,000 copies\; but within weeks demand soared. The students of Andy Murphy’s POLISCI 495 course co-curated the exhibition “Revolutionary Paine” to document the whirlwind caused by its publication. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CHPS Seminar | Reconstructing the properties of the protosolar disk using cosmochemistry
DESCRIPTION:Observations of protoplanetary disks with ALMA have revealed a large diversity of properties\, but also some common tendencies in terms of dust/gas density and radial extension ratios\, as well as the appearance of features like rings and gaps or cavities. It is too late to observe the proto-solar disk\, but many of its properties can be inferred from the current distribution of planetesimals and using cosmochemical constraints on the chronology of planetesimal accretion and the isotopic heterogeneity of the disk.  I will review the available data\, which can be used to reconstruct the proto-solar disk. The view that emerges is that of a quite standard disk of about 90 au in gas radius and 45 au in dust radius\, forming planetesimals at two distinct epochs (one of which is very early\, while the disk was presumably still in Class-0 or Class-1 stage) and evolving towards a transition disk at the appearance of Jupiter and Saturn. Similarities and differences with the PDS70 disk will be discussed.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nThe stress gradient hypothesis predicts that organisms will invest more in mutualistic interactions under increasing abiotic stress. Here\, we examine whether stress associated with reduced atmospheric moisture impacts plant investment in mite domatia\, small structures on leaves that mediate a mutualism between plants and defensive mites using riverbank grape (Vitis riparia). We tested prediction of the stress gradient hypothesis at two scales: a local scale using a humidity gradient created by distance from an island lake\, and a region scale spanning a precipitation gradient across Michigan’s lower peninsula. At each scale\, we measured domatia size\, density\, and abundance\, as well as mite abundance and leaf fungal hyphal load. At the local scale\, domatia trichome density was significantly higher in less humid environments\, consistent with the stress gradient hypothesis\, and mite abundance increased with both humidity and domatia density. At the regional scale\, mite abundance increased significantly with precipitation\, but no relationship was detected between precipitation and any measure of domatia investment or fungal load. Together\, these results suggest that the stress gradient hypothesis partially applies to the plant–mite mutualism in this system\, but that its expression depends on scale and the range of moisture conditions experienced.

DESCRIPTION:Please join The Forum for Research in Medieval Studies (FoRMS) on Monday\, April 20th\, in 1014 Tisch for a presentation by Christopher DeCou. This presentation examines the production and pedagogical utility of clockwork celestial globes in late imperial China\, focusing on the work of Qi Yanhuai (1774-1841) to recenter these artifacts from marginal curiosities to scientific instruments. While many histories of Chinese science begin with texts\, this presentation employs a material culture approach—analyzing extant objects alongside contemporary accounts—to recover historical practices of those who built and used these globes.\n\nThese mechanical globes were significant artifacts for their time: they served as platforms for fashioning scholarly identities for both gentry and artisans\, acted as essential tools for disseminating new astronomical theories\, and provided conceptual models for self-organization and automation. By investigating the material traces and social and cultural contexts surrounding Qi’s instruments\, this talk offers two primary interventions. First\, it places Chinese clockwork globes within a global comparative framework of \"polite\" and \"practical\" astronomy\, challenging their status as a horological oddity. Second\, it demonstrates that popular movements were more engaged with imperial astronomy than current historiography would suggest. Ultimately\, this presentation asserts that celestial globes in China can inform us about the changing nature of astronomical knowledge and time measurement and the social value of technical and scientific practices.\n\nChristopher DeCou is a sixth year doctoral candidate in the History department. His dissertation \"The Stars in Their Eyes: Materials for Making Time in the Qing Empire\, 1700–1900\" explores the culture of timekeeping and instrument making in late imperial China. He completed his undergraduate training in Chinese as well as Medieval and Early Modern Studies at the University of Michigan and did his masters at the University of Chicago.

Perturb-FISH recovers intracellular effects that are consistent with Perturb-seq results in cultured monocytes\, and finds density-dependent regulation of the innate immune response. Pairing Perturb-FISH with a functional readout in a screen of autism spectrum disorder risk genes\, shows common calcium activity phenotypes in induced pluripotent stem cell derived astrocytes and their associated molecular pathways. Finally\, Perturb-FISH can identify neighborhood dependent perturbation effects in a complex tissue by showing immune-tumor interactions in a xenograft model engrafted with human PBMCs. Perturb-FISH is thus a general method for studying the genetic and molecular associations of spatial and functional biology at single-cell resolution.

DESCRIPTION:The standard monomial basis for $\mathfrak{sl}_r$-invariant polynomials is indexed by rectangular standard Young tableaux\, but it lacks rotational invariance. Although promotion induces a cyclic action on tableaux\, a more symmetric basis is desirable. For $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ and $\mathfrak{sl}_3$\, such bases are given by non-crossing matchings and non-elliptic $\mathfrak{sl}_3$ webs\, respectively. In the case of $\mathfrak{sl}_4$\, a web basis has recently been constructed using hourglass plabic graphs\, but this approach relies on intricate growth rules and does not readily generalize to higher rank.\nIn this thesis\, we introduce a simpler and more direct construction of $\mathfrak{sl}_4$ webs. Starting from a rectangular four-row standard Young tableau\, we construct the associated web by stacking the $\mathfrak{sl}_3$ webs corresponding to the top three rows and the bottom three rows\, identifying along the non-crossing matching determined by the middle two rows. We prove that the resulting web is fully reduced and lies in the same equivalence class as the $\mathfrak{sl}_4$ web obtained via growth rules.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Grothendieck duality for schemes can be viewed as a generalization of Serre duality to quasi-coherent sheaves. Since Serre duality also exists in analytic geometry\, it is natural to ask if there is also an analytic version of Grothendieck duality. I will explain how to formulate and prove Grothendieck duality in rigid-analytic geometry\, including an identification of the dualizing complex with volume forms. The main innovation of our approach lies in the underlying functional analysis\, which uses the Ind-category of Banach spaces rather than condensed mathematics. Nevertheless\, our overall strategy is strongly inspired by that of Clausen—Scholze in the complex setting.

DESCRIPTION:The Painleve-V equation has two families of rational solutions\, one built from generalized Umemura polynomials and one built from generalized Laguerre polynomials.  These solutions have drawn interest because they arise in a variety applications and because their zeros and poles exhibit remarkable geometric structures.  We formulate Riemann-Hilbert problems for both families and obtain large-degree asymptotic results using nonlinear steepest-descent analysis.  Results for the generalized Umemura solutions are joint with Matthew Satter of the University of Michigan and the results for the generalized Laguerre solutions are joint with Trevor Johnson of the University of Cincinnati.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:WHY DOESN’T THE UNITED STATES HAVE NATIONAL HEALTH INSURANCE? THE POLITICAL ROLE OF THE AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION
DESCRIPTION:This study examines how the American Medical Association (AMA) helped shape the development of the U.S. health insurance system in the critical period after World War II. Working with the political public relations firm Campaigns\, Inc.\, the AMA launched a nationwide campaign to weaken support for National Health Insurance by framing it as “socialized medicine\,” while simultaneously enrolling people in private health insurance plans to shift demand away from a public alternative. Drawing on newly assembled archival data\, we find that greater exposure to the campaign explains about 20% of the rise in private health insurance enrollment and a comparable decline in public support for a national program. The campaign also appears to have influenced policymaking through coordinated messaging\, resolutions passed by civic organizations\, congressional rhetoric\, and political donations. These findings suggest that the rise of private health insurance in the United States was not solely due to macroeconomic forces or collective bargaining\; rather it was also enabled by a strategic\, interest group-financed effort to shape citizen views and influence policy.

DESCRIPTION:The University of Michigan Residential College Music Program and The Ark present an evening of Irish traditional music and transatlantic songcraft. \n\nTouring from County Meath\, Ireland\, uilleann piper and educator Tadhg Ó Raghallaigh comes from an Irish-speaking family with a legacy in Comhaltas music education. Multi-instrumentalist Aidan Duffy performs on guitar\, mandolin\, and bouzouki\, presenting original songs and Irish ballads. Minnesota-born\, NYC-based songwriter Paul Spring performs music from his new album that fuses Irish traditional and American roots music. Gifted singer and percussionist Ben Duffy backs these performers on bodhrán and drums. Alex Wand presents original resonator guitar compositions and songs with his trio featuring Michael Gould on drums and Joe Fee on bass. The evening features four sets spanning traditional sessions\, original songs\, and instrumental compositions across Irish and American musical traditions.\n\nTadhg Ó Raghallaigh is a uilleann piper from County Meath. Irish is his first language\, and he comes from a long line of respected players. He is also a traditional irish music teacher. His family started the local chapter of Comhaltas Irish music education in County Meath.\n\nAidan Duffy is a traditional musician and songwriter from Trim\, County Meath. He plays traditional Irish guitar\, mandolin\, and bouzouki. He will back up Tadhg in traditional sessions as well as play a set of his own original music. He also has an extensive repertoire of Irish ballads and songs\, and is a gifted singer\, and will sing a few during the trad session. He is also an intermediate-level Irish language speaker. \n\nBen Duffy is a drummer\, singer and songwriter from Trim\, County Meath. He is a gifted singer and guitar player\, with an extensive repertoire of Irish ballads and songs\, and will sing a selection during the trad session. DESCRIPTION:\"Artist’s statement: For centuries\, hair has been critical to how human beings understand racial categories\, gender designations\, and class status. For Black women in particular\, hair has and continues to be tied to ethnic identity and a history of self-determination\, social justice\, and survival. Thus\, chemotherapy-induced hair loss is a devastating event for Black patients who are also more likely to be diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer subtypes necessitating chemotherapy\, carrying a 40% increased risk of dying from breast cancer.\n\nRedefining the ‘crown’: Approaching chemotherapy-induced alopecia among Black patients with breast cancer” started as a manuscript published in the scientific journal Cancer. But the work could not stop there. “Redefining the Crown” then metamorphosed into a photo essay project aimed at exploring the breast cancer journeys of six Black women and their experiences with hair loss due to chemotherapy. Though the project centers the experience of Black women\, we also acknowledge that breast cancer and chemotherapy-induced alopecia impact individuals of all genders. While the goal is to illuminate the unique stories of Black women who are affected uncommonly by this common disease\, the project is also a call to action regarding the disproportionate breast cancer-related mortality facing Black communities.\n\nIn this portraiture series\, photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks. This exhibition examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy and how their sense of cultural pride and personal identity have been redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThese survivors have redefined their own crowns. Each photograph becomes a part of Soleimani’s rich visual storytelling.      \n\n*Flyways *presents a series of new photographs that include images evocative of her family’s history and migration story in juxtaposition with images of injured birds that are representative of Soleimani’s work as a wildlife rehabilitator. DESCRIPTION:Lynn Galbreath\, a Detroit based artist who grew up in Argentina\, is a former recipient of the Creative Artists’ Grant from the Arts Foundation of Michigan and the Michigan Individual Artist Grant from Michigan Council For The Arts. Galbreath’s work has been showcased locally\, nationally and internationally in over 20 solo/two person and over 100 group exhibitions.\n\nGalbreath has an M.F.A. from the James Pearson Duffy Department of Art\, Art History\, & Design\, Wayne State University\, Detroit\, MI\; and a B.F.A. with Permanent K-12 Certification from The Gwen Frostic School of Art\, Western MI University\, Kalamazoo\, MI. Galbreath has chaperoned eleven intensive\, immersive art experiences to Italy\, Spain\, France\, Belgium\, England\, Germany\, the Netherlands\, Austria\, and the Czech Republic. Lynn is a retired Adjunct Associate Professor of Studio Art from Oakland University\, where she has been on the faculty of the Department of Art & Art History since 2000. Lynn has also instructed studio art and design at the College For Creative Studies\, University of Detroit Mercy — School of Architecture\, Macomb Community College\, Wayne State University\, and Bloomfield University School. Her work can be seen in the collections of Oakland University\, Wayne State University\, Detroit Receiving Hospital\, Children’s Hospital of Michigan\, Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital and numerous private collections.\n\nThis exhibition consists of works from a variety of series created by Galbreath over the years: Telegraph\, Storyboard\, and Working Hard for a Living. Each series represents a unique exploration of themes\, techniques\, and social commentaries that reflect Galbreath’s artistic journey and concerns for the world.\n\nTelegraph explores the aesthetic visual weights and balances between harmony and content\, diving deep into how visual elements can convey messages and emotions. This series invites viewers to reflect on the way art communicates through its formal qualities\, as well as its narrative possibilities. The careful interplay of shapes\, colors\, and textures in these works prompts an examination of the viewer's perception and emotional response. These individuals frequently contend with low\, inconsistent incomes\, long hours\, and sometimes exploitative conditions\, fostering a sense of solidarity with those who labor under such circumstances.\n\nFurthermore\, the series invites viewers to confront the broader societal structures that contribute to these inequities. Galbreath's work serves not only as a tribute but also as a call to action to consider how our consumer habits and economic policies affect the livelihoods of others. While the objects on display are disparate at first glance\, ranging from lead tablets and amulets to papyrus and parchment leaves\, they all share a common thread: they have long been labeled as \"magical\" in traditional Western scholarship.\n\nHowever\, each of these artifacts is better understood on a broad spectrum of ancient ritual\, from subversive and transgressive acts to highly social and visible ones. The exhibit highlights the objects’ oft-overlooked material dimensions\, asking us to consider how qualities like color\, texture\, and weight shaped an object’s perceived efficacy and meaning. \n\nThis exhibit was a collaboration\, and displays items from several University of Michigan units: the library’s Special Collections Research Center and Papyrology Collection\, the Museum of Natural History\, and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. Each brushstroke conveys a commitment not only to visual accuracy but also to emotional resonance\, as he strives to encapsulate the spirit of a place that is both loved and contested.\n\nIn addition to these works\, the artist constantly sketches ideas both for paintings and for designing projects in his business. These sketches serve as visual language\, helping him clarify and refine his concepts before bringing them to life. They become a means to communicate ideas to clients and his crew and become an extension of his voice—an academic exercise rooted in artistic practice that fosters collaboration and innovation. The act of sketching also reflects his evolving relationship with the city\, as each drawing encapsulates fleeting moments of inspiration drawn directly from his surroundings. This duality of function—creating art for exhibition and conceptualizing designs for projects—demonstrates Swafford’s versatility and adaptability as an artist.\n\nSwafford received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design\, and while at RISD\, he was part of the European Honors Program. His education not only honed his technical skills but also broadened his artistic perspective through exposure to varied artistic traditions. He has shown his work in both solo and group exhibitions in Chicago\, Kansas City\, and New York State. This Handbook proposes a broader\, more capacious understanding of Jewish film—one that moves past the assumption that Jewishness on screen must be mimetic\, historical\, or tied to the US\, Europe\, and Israel. Highlighting new research on Jews on and off screen in India\, Ethiopia\, Turkey\, Mexico\, the Arab world\, and beyond\, the contributions show how Jewishness operates as a global interpretive mode rather than a fixed set of themes. This expanded lens reveals how Jewish frames of thinking\, cultural practices\, and historical experiences structure filmmaking and spectatorship across wildly diverse geographies and contexts. DESCRIPTION:Why were the recoveries from the 1990-1\, 2001\, and 2007-9 recessions weak relative to other postwar recessions? Leveraging heterogeneous exposure to the national business cycle across U.S. States\, we estimate the trajectory of more exposed U.S. States relative to less exposed U.S. States. For the 1990-1\, 2001\, and 2007-9 recessions we estimate that more exposed States experienced a stronger boom-bust cycle and for the other postwar recessions we estimate a deeper V-shaped recession in more exposed States. Our estimates support theories that these recessions are caused by different shocks. In a quantitative model matched to our cross-sectional estimates\, boom-bust cycles persistently depress the natural rate of interest R∗ in the recovery\, whereas R∗ is elevated following V-shaped recessions

DESCRIPTION:In-Person Talk Only\n\nBy the end of the 1970s\, the Chinese claimed to have built just under 90\,000 small hydropower stations across the country. This talk\, based on a chapter from an in-progress book\, explores the micro-history of a single such hydropower station. From planning\, finance\, and construction\, to labor\, operation\, and maintenance\, Professor Ghosh’s goal is to explain the political economy that enabled the Chinese to mount small hydropower projects and connect them to local grids\, thereby contributing to our understanding of subnational governance and center-local relations in Mao-era China.\n   \n   Arunabh Ghosh (BA Haverford\; PhD Columbia) is a professor in the History Department at Harvard University. A historian of modern China\, his interests include social and economic history\, history of science and statecraft\, environmental history\, and transnational history. Ghosh is the author of *Making it Count: Statistics and Statecraft in the Early People’s Republic of China* (Princeton\, 2020). He is working on a book titled *The Significance of Small Things: Hydropower and Rural Energy in China* (under contract with Stanford University Press).

DESCRIPTION:Meghan Wysocki & Joe Antrim perform on the Charles Baird Carillon\, an instrument of 53 bronze bells located inside the Burton Memorial Tower. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8)\, and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Hearing protection earmuffs are provided for visitors. Be prepared to walk on ice and snow in the bell chamber during winter. Built in 1936\, the Charles Baird Carillon is not ADA accessible. Visitors with mobility concerns are invited to visit the Lurie Carillon.

DESCRIPTION:This paper develops a framework in which a multiproduct ecosystem competes with multiple single-product firms in both price and innovation. The ecosystem can use data from one product to improve the quality of its other products. We use the framework to study three regulatory policies aimed at leveling the playing field. Restricting the ecosystem’s cross-product data usage\, or forcing it to share data with single-product firms\, benefits those firms and induces them to innovate more. However\, these policies also dampen the ecosystem’s incentive to collect data and innovate\, potentially raising prices. Consumers are better off only when single-product firms are sufficiently good at innovating. Facilitating data exchange between single-product firms via a data cooperative can backfire and harm them\, because it induces the ecosystem to price more aggressively. For both the data-sharing and data-cooperative policies\, there exist data-compensation schemes such that consumers are better off compared to no regulation.

DESCRIPTION:TDP-43 proteinopathy is a defining hallmark of ALS and FTD. 95% of reported ALS cases result from spontaneous mutations with over 97% being attributed to TDP-43 misfunction. TDP-43 is a nuclear RNA binding protein responsible for RNA metabolism with its most notable role being splicing of RNA. TDP-43 pathology is defined by nuclear clearance known as a loss-of-function and cytoplasmic aggregation\, a gain-of-function. Loss of function results in cryptic splicing leading to the inclusion of cryptic exons that induce frameshifts causing RNA degradation or cryptic peptides. This disruption of cellular homeostasis leads to neuronal death in both cortical and motor neurons\, a defining characteristic of ALS. Studies of the cause of ALS have implicated the exposure to environmental toxins as a risk factor for the progression of ALS. Here we use a fluorescent reporter of TDP-43 cryptic splicing in I3neurons in an assay of 22 environmental toxins to characterize the effects of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and heavy metals on TDP-43 protein function. We show that increased concentrations of toxins reduce survivability of neurons and increase cryptic splicing events. We conclude that exposure to environmental toxins may contribute to ALS progression by disrupting TDP-43 protein function.

DESCRIPTION:“She has a keen\, finely honed pop instinct all her own” –The New York Times\n\nCrystal Bowersox\, a northwest Ohio native\, has built her world around music. By the age of 10\, she was performing in local clubs and venues. On the cusp of 18 and with a curious heart\, Crystal moved to Chicago\, IL\, where she spent her days busking on subway platforms between working odd jobs and attending school. \n\nChicago’s rich musical history helped Bowersox to broaden her musical horizons. Ultimately\, Bowersox auditioned for the ninth season of American Idol\, and her time on the show proved to be well spent. In 2010\, her debut album\, “Farmer’s Daughter” was released on Jive Records and since\, she has since released 3 LP’s\, two EPs\, several singles\, and is currently developing a theatrical rock concert titled\, \"Trauma Queen\". Crystal has recorded and performed alongside several notable names and additionally\, has used her voice and talents to benefit several organizations close to her heart.

DESCRIPTION:\"Artist’s statement: For centuries\, hair has been critical to how human beings understand racial categories\, gender designations\, and class status. For Black women in particular\, hair has and continues to be tied to ethnic identity and a history of self-determination\, social justice\, and survival. Thus\, chemotherapy-induced hair loss is a devastating event for Black patients who are also more likely to be diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer subtypes necessitating chemotherapy\, carrying a 40% increased risk of dying from breast cancer.\n\nRedefining the ‘crown’: Approaching chemotherapy-induced alopecia among Black patients with breast cancer” started as a manuscript published in the scientific journal Cancer. But the work could not stop there. “Redefining the Crown” then metamorphosed into a photo essay project aimed at exploring the breast cancer journeys of six Black women and their experiences with hair loss due to chemotherapy. Though the project centers the experience of Black women\, we also acknowledge that breast cancer and chemotherapy-induced alopecia impact individuals of all genders. While the goal is to illuminate the unique stories of Black women who are affected uncommonly by this common disease\, the project is also a call to action regarding the disproportionate breast cancer-related mortality facing Black communities.\n\nIn this portraiture series\, photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks. This exhibition examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy and how their sense of cultural pride and personal identity have been redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThese survivors have redefined their own crowns. More profound than the new hairstyles they don after hair loss are the invisible crowns that they choose to wear each day: gratitude\, faith\, and resilience. What do their words mean to you? Drawn from the archives of Project Save\, these photographs capture different valences of American life\, as experienced\, performed\, and imagined by Armenian immigrants. From naturalization classes to festivals of nations\, from breaking new ground for churches to mundane tableaus of Thanksgiving and Christmas\, this range of photographs offers a glimpse of a community in the making\, one that sought to preserve a memory of its Ottoman past even while anticipating an American future.

Drafted by the Confederation Congress at the same time as the Constitution\, the Ordinance outlined a framework for government in the northwest territory\, defined the rights guaranteed in that territory\, and created a process for admitting new states to the United States. The display offers a rare opportunity to view a document that helped shape the ideals and values of the young nation.

DESCRIPTION:Iranian-American artist Sheida Soleimani explores themes of migration\, political exile\, queerness\, and environmental crisis through the wildly imaginative and intricate scenarios she first stages in her studio. The tableaus—which often include live animals\, props\, even her parents—are then photographed\, documenting the artist’s process. Each photograph becomes a part of Soleimani’s rich visual storytelling.      \n\n*Flyways *presents a series of new photographs that include images evocative of her family’s history and migration story in juxtaposition with images of injured birds that are representative of Soleimani’s work as a wildlife rehabilitator. (In 2018\, Soleimani founded Congress of Birds\, a wild bird rehabilitation center in Rhode Island.) The change in her practice to include bird rescue results in a revolutionary body of work steeped in passion and articulated in a completely original visual language. DESCRIPTION:Lynn Galbreath\, a Detroit based artist who grew up in Argentina\, is a former recipient of the Creative Artists’ Grant from the Arts Foundation of Michigan and the Michigan Individual Artist Grant from Michigan Council For The Arts. Galbreath’s work has been showcased locally\, nationally and internationally in over 20 solo/two person and over 100 group exhibitions.\n\nGalbreath has an M.F.A. from the James Pearson Duffy Department of Art\, Art History\, & Design\, Wayne State University\, Detroit\, MI\; and a B.F.A. with Permanent K-12 Certification from The Gwen Frostic School of Art\, Western MI University\, Kalamazoo\, MI. Galbreath has chaperoned eleven intensive\, immersive art experiences to Italy\, Spain\, France\, Belgium\, England\, Germany\, the Netherlands\, Austria\, and the Czech Republic. Lynn is a retired Adjunct Associate Professor of Studio Art from Oakland University\, where she has been on the faculty of the Department of Art & Art History since 2000. Lynn has also instructed studio art and design at the College For Creative Studies\, University of Detroit Mercy — School of Architecture\, Macomb Community College\, Wayne State University\, and Bloomfield University School. Her work can be seen in the collections of Oakland University\, Wayne State University\, Detroit Receiving Hospital\, Children’s Hospital of Michigan\, Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital and numerous private collections.\n\nThis exhibition consists of works from a variety of series created by Galbreath over the years: Telegraph\, Storyboard\, and Working Hard for a Living. Each series represents a unique exploration of themes\, techniques\, and social commentaries that reflect Galbreath’s artistic journey and concerns for the world.\n\nTelegraph explores the aesthetic visual weights and balances between harmony and content\, diving deep into how visual elements can convey messages and emotions. This series invites viewers to reflect on the way art communicates through its formal qualities\, as well as its narrative possibilities. The careful interplay of shapes\, colors\, and textures in these works prompts an examination of the viewer's perception and emotional response. By utilizing abstract forms\, Galbreath encourages an engagement that goes beyond mere observation\, seeking to provoke thought about how aesthetic choices influence understanding and meaning.\n\nOn the other hand\, Storyboard is a series of image-driven installation paintings that vary greatly in size\, showcasing Galbreath’s versatility and creative ingenuity. The titles of the works draw inspiration from the years spent creating visuals for TV commercials and public service announcements\, illustrating how commercial art often intertwines with societal messages. This series emphasizes the profound impact visual narratives have on consumer culture and public perception\, underscoring the artist's belief in the potency of imagery to shape narratives. The installations weave a complex fabric of storytelling that challenges viewers to reconsider their relationship with media and the messages they consume daily.\n\nWorking Hard for a Living pays tribute to our sustainable and unsustainable resources\, shedding light on the individuals who toil diligently within these economic frameworks. This series highlights the hard-working suppliers of essential products\, including Farm Market Managers\, Fishmongers\, and Beach Vendors. By portraying these self-employed individuals\, often operating within informal economies\, Galbreath draws attention to the unique challenges they face. These individuals frequently contend with low\, inconsistent incomes\, long hours\, and sometimes exploitative conditions\, fostering a sense of solidarity with those who labor under such circumstances.\n\nFurthermore\, the series invites viewers to confront the broader societal structures that contribute to these inequities. Galbreath's work serves not only as a tribute but also as a call to action to consider how our consumer habits and economic policies affect the livelihoods of others. The layered narratives present in this series open a dialogue about the value we place on labor and the often unseen struggles that support our day-to-day lives. Through these explorations\, Galbreath establishes a multifaceted narrative that intertwines art with activism\, compelling audiences to engage both aesthetically and ethically with the realities depicted in the exhibition.

DESCRIPTION:View a diverse array of artifacts which were created to communicate with and call upon various unseen\, supernatural forces for aid and protection. While the objects on display are disparate at first glance\, ranging from lead tablets and amulets to papyrus and parchment leaves\, they all share a common thread: they have long been labeled as \"magical\" in traditional Western scholarship.\n\nHowever\, each of these artifacts is better understood on a broad spectrum of ancient ritual\, from subversive and transgressive acts to highly social and visible ones. The exhibit highlights the objects’ oft-overlooked material dimensions\, asking us to consider how qualities like color\, texture\, and weight shaped an object’s perceived efficacy and meaning. \n\nThis exhibit was a collaboration\, and displays items from several University of Michigan units: the library’s Special Collections Research Center and Papyrology Collection\, the Museum of Natural History\, and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. DESCRIPTION:About the exhibition\nDiane Lavoie’s large-scale textile artworks are made entirely from up-cycled materials and are often placed in direct visual conversation with the natural landscape. Through the artist's choice of materials and visual subject matter\, the springtime installation *Momentary Landscape* is intended to emphasize important work surrounding sustainability\, climate change\, and environmental issues through the arts. The project is scheduled to unfold in the lobby of the South Thayer Building during exam week\, offering students and visitors a restorative\, reflective\, and joyful experience through public art installation.\n\nAbout the artist\nDiane Lavoie is a North American visual artist based in Berlin\, Germany. Her art represents a dialogue between the natural and artificial world\, and explores the boundaries between reality and perception. In her practice\, Lavoie creates large-scale\, textile representations of natural environments in contrast and connection with the actual environs surrounding them. Lavoie holds an MFA in painting from California State University Long Beach and a BFA in illustration from Massachusetts College of Art. Her work has been exhibited internationally and is held in private and public collections in the US and Europe.

The significance of this documentation goes beyond mere nostalgia\; it invites viewers to reflect on the dynamic interplay between urban development and ecological restoration\, prompting a deeper understanding of how cities evolve while retaining traces of their history.\n\nSwafford’s paintings are created on location and in one session. The natural conditions\, including light\, shadow\, and atmosphere\, change dramatically from hour to hour and day to day\, forcing the artist to respond quickly and decisively. This approach\, born of a direct engagement with the subject and the fleeting nature of the scene\, along with his wet-on-wet technique\, keeps the work fresh and immediate. By immersing himself in the environment\, Swafford captures the diverse textures and vibrant colors that characterize Detroit’s landscape\, imbuing his work with a sense of urgency and spontaneity. Each brushstroke conveys a commitment not only to visual accuracy but also to emotional resonance\, as he strives to encapsulate the spirit of a place that is both loved and contested.\n\nIn addition to these works\, the artist constantly sketches ideas both for paintings and for designing projects in his business. These sketches serve as visual language\, helping him clarify and refine his concepts before bringing them to life. They become a means to communicate ideas to clients and his crew and become an extension of his voice—an academic exercise rooted in artistic practice that fosters collaboration and innovation. The act of sketching also reflects his evolving relationship with the city\, as each drawing encapsulates fleeting moments of inspiration drawn directly from his surroundings. This duality of function—creating art for exhibition and conceptualizing designs for projects—demonstrates Swafford’s versatility and adaptability as an artist.\n\nSwafford received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design\, and while at RISD\, he was part of the European Honors Program. His education not only honed his technical skills but also broadened his artistic perspective through exposure to varied artistic traditions. He has shown his work in both solo and group exhibitions in Chicago\, Kansas City\, and New York State. DESCRIPTION:Come hear about the honors research of OS seniors Lindsey Smith and Eden Wilcomes!Lost in Translation: The Role of Spanish-Language Political Advertising and Communications Agencies - Eden Wilcomes\nAs the Hispanic population of the United States continues to rise\, so too does the Hispanic electorate’s influence in national elections. Similarly\, as the prominence of the Latino vote becomes more noticeable\, so does the attention of politicians. In order to appeal to Latino voters\, many politicians and campaigns seek the help of Spanish-language political communications agencies\, yet there exists little research on political communications and advertising agencies generally\, and even less on specialized agencies. By conducting interviews with employees of Spanish-language agencies\, politicians and their staff\, and Spanish-language communications experts\, I was able to better understand the importance and purpose of Spanish-language political advertising.Present-Day Panopticon: Reactions to Electronic Surveillance Among Young Professionals Entering the Workforce - Lindsey Smith\nWith the rise of technology\, employers have increasing access to data on their employees' actions and productivity. Interview based research was conducted with University of Michigan juniors and seniors who recently interned in large business organizations. My findings highlight how interns react to surveillance (or the possibility of it) and this age group's perspective on surveillance as a whole.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Mathematical Biology Seminar: Parameter Estimation\, Calibration\, Uncertainty and Sensitivity in Multiscale Models
DESCRIPTION:Mathematical and computational models of biological systems are increasingly complex\, typically comprised of hybrid multi-scale methods such as ordinary differential equations\, partial differential equations\, agent-based and rule-based models\, etc. These mechanistic\, multiscale models concurrently simulate detail at resolutions of whole host\, multi-organ\, organ\, tissue\, cellular\, molecular\, and genomic dynamics. Lacking analytical and numerical methods\, solving complex biological models requires iterative parameter sampling-based approaches to establish appropriate ranges\, of model parameters that capture corresponding experimental datasets. However\, these models typically comprise large numbers of parameters and therefore large degrees of freedom. Thus\, fitting these models to multiple experimental datasets over time and space presents significant challenges. We undertake the task of advancing calibration practices across models and dataset types for model calibration. Evaluating the process of calibrating models includes weighing strengths and applicability of each approach as well as standardizing calibration methods. We compare the performance of our model agnostic Calibration Protocol (CaliPro) with approximate Bayesian computing (ABC) to highlight strengths\, weaknesses\, synergies\, and differences among these methods. Due to the typically nonlinear and stochastic nature of multiscale models as well as unknown parameter values\, various types of uncertainty are present\; thus\, effective assessment and quantification of such uncertainty through sensitivity analysis is important. We present ideas for global sensitivity analysis in the context of multiscale and multi-compartment models and highlight its value in model development and analysis. We present an overview of sensitivity analysis methods\, approaches for extending such methods to a multiscale setting\, and examples of how sensitivity analysis can inform model reduction. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Regulatory\, Property\, and Human Rights-Based Strategies for Protecting American Waterways
DESCRIPTION:Erin Ryan\, Associate Dean for Environmental Programs and Elizabeth C. & Clyde W. Atkinson Professor\, Florida State University College of Law\n\nThis analysis introduces a framework of three different strategies for protecting American waterways—the conventional regulatory approach\, an alternative property-based approach\, and a newer human rights-based approach—and reviews how the dynamic among them will be impacted by recent Supreme Court decisions impacting environmental law.  The rights of nature movement has emerged as a human rights-based approach to environmental protection\, the public trust doctrine offers a public property-based approach\, and the Clean Water Act epitomizes the more traditional regulatory approach. \n\nIn recent years\, however\, the Court issued a series of decisions that have unwound nearly a half-century of accepted regulatory practice\, limiting the reach of the Clean Water Act as a tool for protecting waterways in Sackett v. EPA\, weakening the reach of the Clean Air Act in West Virginia v. EPA\, and weakening environmental agencies more generally in Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo. These cases will exact a cost for wise environmental governance under all three models reviewed here.

Existing approaches—most notably MCMC- and variational-based methods—are often computationally expensive\, sensitive to initialization\, and particularly brittle in regimes where the Dirichlet concentration parameters are asymmetric or highly skewed.\n \nIn this work\, we study the problem of efficiently learning Dirichlet Simplex Models\, with special emphasis on the practically important but underexplored setting of asymmetric concentration parameters and regimes where individual components dominate the mixture. We show that the second-order moment structure of the observed data encodes the simplex geometry up to an orthogonal transformation on a low-dimensional subspace. Exploiting this structure\, we reduce parameter recovery to the problem of learning an orthogonal map.\n \nBy introducing a geometry-aware metric aligned with the intrinsic covariance of the data\, we obtain a simplified optimization scheme over the orthogonal group that is both stable and fast. Our approach leverages the polytope geometry of the simplex to enable parallelization over symmetry classes\, significantly accelerating convergence. Empirically\, the resulting algorithm performs remarkably well for asymmetric Dirichlet models\, where standard MCMC-based methods often struggle. We view this framework as a step toward efficient\, geometry-driven learning algorithms for broader classes of latent variable models.\n---\nAmmar Eltigani: Random Matrix Theory for High-Dimensional Machine Learning\n \nAbstract: The modern high-dimensional regime—where the number of samples and their dimensions grow proportionally—is ubiquitous in machine learning applications such as finance\, healthcare\, wireless communications\, neuroscience\, and computer vision. Despite the remarkable success of large-scale models in this setting\, the underlying mathematical reasons remain only partially understood. Why\, for instance\, do overparameterized neural networks generalize well\, and why do their risk curves exhibit double descent?\n \nThis expository talk begins by examining how low-dimensional intuitions fail in high dimensions\, focusing on covariance estimation. We then introduce the Marčenko–Pastur law\, which describes the limiting spectral distribution of sample covariance matrices for white noise. Finally\, we discuss its generalization to arbitrary covariances and apply it to ridgeless linear regression\, deriving a theoretical risk curve that displays the double-descent phenomenon.\n---\nNicholas Simafranca: Learning Low-Dimensional Representations with Heteroscedastic Data Sources\n\nAbstract: Principal component analysis (PCA) is a fundamental method for dimensionality reduction\, but it treats all samples uniformly and can perform poorly when data come from sources with unequal noise levels. In this talk\, I begin with the classical and probabilistic viewpoints of PCA\, introducing probabilistic PCA (PPCA) as a latent-variable model for low-dimensional structure. I then discuss HePPCAT\, a heteroscedastic extension of PPCA that allows different groups of samples to have different noise variances. Unlike classical PCA\, the resulting maximum-likelihood problem is nonconvex and is not solved by a single eigendecomposition. I will describe how this problem can be approached through alternating majorization-minimization and explain how a Riemannian block MM framework gives a route to proving convergence of a proximalized HePPCAT algorithm to a stationary point.

DESCRIPTION:Seminar Summary: Cognition refers to the processes by which animals acquire\, store\, and use information from the environment. These processes drive many adaptive behaviors\, but we know little about how cognitive traits evolve in wild populations. I will use Polistes wasps as a model to investigate the links between cognition\, behavior\, and fitness over multiple generations in the field. My dissertation will provide important information about the costs and benefits of individual variation in cognition.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Development as Skills and Altruism
DESCRIPTION:This paper emphasizes the central role of skill and altruism in development\, defined as an increase in social welfare. In the basic model\, skills expand the set of feasible payoffs\, while altruism guides the decision maker’s choice. Greater skills need not increase social welfare\, because such expansions combine a positive frontier effect with an ambiguous substitution effect\, potentially toward actions that are privately attractive but socially harmful. This ambiguous effect of skills on development is referred to as the “lottery of the technology” and disappears when altruism is high enough to ensure that new opportunities created by skills are used only when they raise social welfare. Extensions of the model show that 1) endogenous technological change makes altruism even more influential in the long run 2) the effect of stronger institutions is subject to a “lottery of alignment of interests” between policymakers’ private gains and social welfare\, unless policymakers’ altruism is high enough to ensure the good use of institutional power\, making institutions a lever of altruism rather than a substitute and 3) allowing altruism to be group-specific shows that only universal altruism guarantees the effective use of skill improvements. This framework speaks to many contemporary and historical events and leads to the conclusion that ensuring long-term development requires both the selection of altruistic leaders and a population shift in the distribution of altruism.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CHPS Inaugural Lecture | Planet formation and evolution: key processes to understand the diversity of planetary systems
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The discovery of a large number of extrasolar planets has demonstrated that our own system is not \"typical\". Exo-planetary systems can be very different from our own\, and diverse from each other. Understanding this diversity is a major goal of modern planetary science. The formation of planetary systems is not fully understood\, but major advances have been obtained in the last 10 years. New concepts have been proposed\, such as the streaming instability for the formation of planetesimals and pebble accretion for the formation of protoplanets. It is also now clear that planets forming in the proto-planetary disks have to migrate during their accretion\, if their mass exceeds a few times the mass of Mars. Accretion and dynamical evolution are therefore very coupled processes. This leads to complex evolutions\, very sensitive to initial conditions and fortuitous events\, that are the key to understand the observed diversity of planetary systems. The early formation of Jupiter and its limited migration due to the formation of Saturn are two fundamental ingredients that determined the basic structure of the Solar System. There is also evidence that the vast majority of planetary systems become unstable after the removal of the protoplanetary disk. The effects of this instability are very different depending on the masses of the planets involved. Our Solar System also experienced a global instability\, but fortuitously\, our giant planets did not develop large orbital eccentricities.\n\nBio: Dr. Morbidelli is one of the world's top experts in the dynamical history of the solar system (as one example\, the Nice model of giant planet instabilities as the origin of the late heavy bombardment). He is also an expert in the area of planet formation writ large\, with numerous contributions on the origins of planetary systems.  He won the Urey Prize from the planetary science division of the American Astronomical Society in 2000\, the Grand Prix Mergier-Bourdeix from the Académie des Sciences in 2009\, the CNRS Silver Medal in 2019\, and is a member of the Collége de France.\n\nThe talk will be followed by refreshments and time for discussion until 5:00 p.m.\n\nThe Departments of Physics\, Astronomy\, CLASP\, and Earth & Environmental Science have jointly established a new initiative named the Center for Habitable Planetary Systems (CHPS).
