SUMMARY:Performance:John Cowan Trio
DESCRIPTION:The voice of newgrass\n\nWhen John Cowan and Luke Bulla perform together\, their shows reflect 25 years of shared history\, musical trust\, and genuine friendship. Blending New Grass Revival (and more) favorites with old and new originals\, they pair masterful picking\, rich harmony\, and stories that are heartfelt\, funny\, and hard-earned. Cowan calls Bulla “one of the most beautiful gifts” of his long musical life\, while Bulla\, inspired by Cowan since his youth\, considers sharing the stage a “dream come true” and a source of “immense gratitude and honor.” Together\, they deliver music rooted in gratitude\, joy\, and deep mutual respect. This evening they perform as a trio with Sam Leslie.

SUMMARY:Performance:Adam Ezra Group
DESCRIPTION:Spontaneous roots-based music that makes a connection\n\nWe don’t see many artists building the kind of momentum Adam Ezra Group is generating right now.\n\nWhat has grown over more than two decades of relentless grassroots touring has become something far bigger than a typical touring band: a fiercely independent\, fan-powered community that continues to expand one show at a time. Rooms across the country are selling out when Adam Ezra Group comes to town\, with longtime fans regularly traveling across state lines to catch multiple shows\, drawn by the band’s deep sense of community and the promise that no two nights are ever the same.\n\nThe band never performs from a fixed setlist\, instead shaping each night around the energy in the room. Songs\, stories\, and moments unfold in real time—part concert\, part revival\, and part reminder of what live music can still be at its best.\n\nBlending folk/Americana soul\, rock ’n’ roll energy\, and deeply human songwriting\, Adam Ezra Group has built one of the most authentic underground followings in live music today while quickly becoming recognized on a national level. As SPIN recently put it\, they are “an independent underground folk band blowing up without selling out\,” a rise that has happened entirely outside the traditional industry system\, powered by word of mouth\, community activism\, and a genuine connection between band and audience that often turns first-time listeners into lifelong fans.\n\nCatch them now while they’re still playing the kinds of rooms where you can give Adam a hug on your way out.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Tanner Lecture on Human Values | Kieran Setiya
DESCRIPTION:Can humour help us cope with hardship without distancing or denial? Does laughter at misfortune manifest what Bergson called “a momentary anesthesia of the heart”—or worse? This talk takes up a puzzle about confessional comedy: why isn’t it vicious to draw pleasure from another’s suffering\, as we do when comics joke about trauma? The answer turns on the fine structure of empathy\; and the upshot is a theory of confessional stand-up as bespoke theodicy: a temporary\, interpersonal solution to the emotional problem of evil. This solution is one we can administer to ourselves\, using humour to confront adversity. Content note: violence and sexual assault.\n\nKieran Setiya is Peter de Florez Professor of Philosophy at MIT\, where he works on ethics and related questions about human agency and human knowledge. He is the author of Reasons without Rationalism\, Knowing Right From Wrong\,Midlife: A Philosophical Guide and Life Is Hard: How Philosophy Can Help Us Find Our Way\, which was selected as a Best Book of 2022 by The Economist and The New Yorker. His writing has appeared in The New York Times\, The Guardian\, the LA Review of Books\, the TLS\, the London Review of Books\, the Boston Review\, The Atlantic\, Aeon\, and The Yale Review\, as well as numerous academic journals. He is working on a book about laughter as a guide to life.\n\nMore information about Kieran Setiya can be found here: http://www.ksetiya.net/\n\nAbout the Tanner Lectures on Human Values\nMichigan is one of nine institutions worldwide that hosts an annual Tanner Lecture on Human Values. Tanner Lectures are funded through the generosity of the late Professor of Philosophy\, industrialist\, and philanthropist\, Obert Clark Tanner\, and his wife\, Grace Tanner. Professor Tanner wrote:I hope these lectures will contribute to the intellectual and moral life of mankind. I see them simply as a search for a better understanding of human behavior and human values. This understanding may be pursued for its own intrinsic worth\, but it may also eventually have practical consequences for the quality of personal and social life.Although the Tanners established the supporting endowment in 1978\, Joel Feinberg's April 1977 lecture at Michigan inaugurated the international series of Tanner Lectures. Each year\, Michigan has a Tanner Lecture combined with an interdisciplinary symposium to which we invite distinguished scholars from around the world. These events are free and open to the public. The complete list of Tanner Lectures at Michigan is available here: \nhttps://lsa.umich.edu/philosophy/news-events/all-events/tanner-lecture/tanner-lectures-on-human-values-at-the-university-of-michigan.html.

SUMMARY:Performance:Great Lake Swimmers
DESCRIPTION:Artist presale 6/18 10am\nPublic on sale 6/19 10am\n\n“A stunning variety of tones and textures… nothing less than both cerebral and sublime” –American Songwriter \n\nFeaturing a blend of acoustic instruments\, rural soundscapes\, and wistful vocals\, Great Lake Swimmers are a critically acclaimed indie-folk group led by Tony Dekker. Based in Southern Ontario\, the group emerged in the early 2000s with a succession of heavily atmospheric albums recorded in old silos and rural country churches. The music developed in that pastoral warmth\, performed and recorded in acoustically resonant and historical locales with a revolving cast of personnel. They are renowned for homespun folk and lush\, intimate Americana in their live shows. \n\nTheir newest album\, Caught Light\, released in October 2025\, is their most immediate and instinctive album to date. Recorded in just five days in Ontario’s Ganaraska Forest with producer Darcy Yates (Bahamas) and engineer Jimmy Bowskill (Blue Rodeo)\, it draws warmth from early ’70s folk-pop while embracing a new spontaneity and directness in Dekker’s songwriting. \n\nGreat Lake Swimmers have been shortlisted for the prestigious Polaris Music Prize and nominated twice for Canada’s Juno Awards\, with the CBC calling them “a national treasure.”

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Incorporations: Capitalism and Collective Life with Associate Professor Matthew Hull
DESCRIPTION:Join the U-M Department of Anthropology for the annual Roy A. Rappaport Lecture Series! Associate Professor Matthew Hull will present the fall 2026 series\, titled “Incorporations: Capitalism and Collective Life.”\n\nAbstract: “Corporations are often seen as economic actors\, but they have been central to Anglo-American governance for centuries—pioneers of democratic assembly\, speech\, citizenship\, and constitutions. They are free and open to the public:\n\nFriday\, Sept. 25\n“Corporate Persons in Human Law: Reproduction\, Kinship\, Jurisdiction”\n\nFriday\, Oct. 23\n“Freedom and Citizenship: Corporate Membership and the Making of Exclusion”\n\nFriday\, Nov. 13\n“Meetings and Speech: Corporate Mediations of Will”\n\nFriday\, Dec. 4\n“Sharing and Inequality in Corporations”\n\nVIRTUAL PARTICIPATION LINK: Coming fall 2026!\n\nIf you need accommodations to attend\, please email anthro.exec.secretary@umich.edu.

SUMMARY:Performance:Riders in the Sky
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning harmonies\, wacky Western wit and high-yodeling adventures\n\n40 years. It seemed to go by in a blur\, pounding the road\, seeing the world\, raising babies and sending them to college\, mowing lawns\, romances\, marriages\, high school drama\, endless airports\, the nights at the Hollywood Bowl\, the night at the Red Barn in Louisville dodging various barroom projectiles\, frozen diesel lines\, blast furnace desert heat\, hours of practice\, late nights and early mornings\, and lots and lots and lots of laughter.\n \n40 years ago. No laptops\, no cellular phones\, no Google\, no downloads\, no Skype\, no Tweets\, no Apple\, no Microsoft\, no texting\, no electric cars\, no Uber. A different world. But there were three young men with drive and wit who wanted to keep a special music alive. They believed in preserving the heritage of Western Music and presenting it to a new generation. They believed in entertaining\, and they did so… entertaining themselves as well as the audience! And they believed in creating original Western Music to continue the tradition\, not just seal it in amber as a museum piece. What they did not realize at the time was that they would be doing the same thing 40 years later.\n \n40 years ago\, Ranger Doug\, Too Slim and the late Windy Bill Collins played that first date on the bitter cold evening of November 11th\, 1977 at Herr Harry’s Frank N’ Stein Rathskeller in Nashville\, and small listening room dates followed. By August of the following year demand was building\, and while Windy Bill left\, Woody Paul joined\, and the true professional beginnings of the band began at the Kentucky State Fair\, where the trio played 10 days for $2500- and bought their own rooms and meals out of that!\n \nA first wave followed\, including appearances on Austin City Limits\; recording contracts with Rounder\, then MCA\, then Columbia\; guest appearances on the Grand Ole Opry leading to membership in 1982\; and a three-year run on The Nashville Network with a TV show called “Tumbleweed Theater\,” which yet in turn led to a seven-year run on public radio with “Riders Radio Theater. People Magazine\, interested in the Riders phenomenon\, ran a story which happily caught the eye of a Hollywood producer.\n \nAnd so the second wave broke\, sending the boys to Hollywood to star in “Riders In The Sky” on CBS for a year on Saturday mornings\, introducing them to yet another generation. More recordings\, endless show dates\, and television appearances followed for a decade before the fine folks at Pixar called and asked the quartet – by this time they had been joined by Joey the Cowpolka King – to sing a tune called “Woody’s Roundup” in the movie “Toy Story 2.” Thus\, the third wave began\, highlighted by a number of projects for Disney\, including two albums\, both of which won GRAMMY Awards!\n \nThe creation of satellite radio has recently given them a new platform\, as they continue to produce episodes of the award winning “Classic Cowboy Corral” on Sirius/XM.\n \nStill more road dates and recordings (several on their own Riders Radio Records label) and other film and television projects have filled the days and weeks and years\, and since the quartet has slowed up very little\, the numbers begin to add up: an astonishing 7\,200+ appearances\, 35 years on the Grand Ole Opry\, 40 records albums (well\, now CDs\,) and tours of all 50 states and all over the world. Honors accumulated as well. In addition to the two Grammy Awards\, Riders received numerous awards from the Western Music Association\, including the highest: membership in the Western Music Hall of Fame\; numerous Wrangler awards from the Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Museum\; awards from the Academy of Western Artists\; enshrinement in the Walkway of Western Stars\, and more. What began as a celebration of classic Western Music and an evening of hilarity has become a career\, and that career has become a legend\, one which\, 40 years on\, shows no signs of stopping or even slowing down much.\n \nRanger Doug\, Too Slim\, Woody Paul and Joey the Cowpolka King… 40 years on\, “The Cowboy Way.”

SUMMARY:Performance:Joshua Radin
DESCRIPTION:New Music!\n\nJoshua Radin emerged in 2004 as an empathetic\, engaging\, and often enthralling troubadour. Over the years\, he’s tallied north of 1 billion streams\, moved 1 million-plus albums worldwide\, and scored a gold certification for the single “I’d Rather Be With You.” His music has appeared in over 200 films\, television series\, and commercials. In addition to multiple showstopping appearances on Ellen (who also enlisted him to perform at her wedding) and Today Show\, and performances on The Tonight Show\, Jimmy Kimmel LIVE!\, and Conan\, he contributed “Brand New Day” to a commercial in support of the troops at the request of First Ladies Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden. He’s played to sold out crowds around the globe and shared the stage with the likes of Ed Sheeran\, Sara Bareilles\, Ingrid Michaelson\, Sheryl Crow\, Tori Amos and more. Not to mention\, he’s a staunch philanthropist who supports Little Kids Rock and North Shore Animal League America (NSALA)\, among others. Thus far his catalog consists of nine full-length offerings highlighted by fan favorites such as We Were Here\, Simple Times\, Underwater\, Wax Wings\, and Here\, Right Now.\n \nFollowing the release of his 2021 acclaimed album The Ghost and The Wall\, Joshua left his material existence in the rearview\, grabbed a backpack\, packed his guitar\, picked up a pen and a pad\, hit the road in search of new stories to tell. Those stories comprise though the world will tell me so\, volumes one & two which were released early 2023. During 2025\, he turned the page on the next chapter of his career and life with his tenth full-length LP and first independent album since 2017\, One Day Home. Immersing himself in the process mind\, body\, and soul\, he pored over these 13 tracks\, perfecting each moment and co-producing six tracks with Wally Gagel. This time around\, he prepared the music for a double-LP release with one half original studio versions of the tracklisting and the other piano vocal versions. Musically\, he taps into two sides of his sonic palette\, leaning into soul and singer-songwriter stylings while tracing the journey of a romantic relationship.\n\nVIP package includes one general admission ticket and admission to an intimate pre-show event with Joshua Radin\, includes:\n\nplay a few songs\nparticipate in a small Q&A session\nMeet & Greet + Photo Op - Signed Tour Poster\nCrowd Free opportunity to buy merch with 10% discounted merch prices.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Bookworm #97 - Author Conversation with Anne Ruggles Gere\, \"Agents of Survivance: Indigenous Women Teachers in the Boarding School Era\"
DESCRIPTION:In her book\, \"Agents of Survivance: Indigenous Women Teachers in the Boarding School Era\,\" Anne Ruggles Gere complicates and enriches established accounts of the Indian boarding school era and what preceded it by looking closely at the largely ignored Indigenous women teachers in these schools.\n\nFocusing on Sarah Winnemucca\, S. Alice Callahan\, Angel DeCora\, and Ella Deloria\, Gere shows how these and many other Indian women teachers subversively resisted assimilation with tribal presence\, relationality\, connection to land\, rejection of victimhood\, and maintenance of cultural traditions\, art\, and languages. Their vulnerable positions in schools directed by Euro-Americans necessitated that their contributions be subversive\, nearly invisible. Despite this\, they developed policies and practices that were passed to Indian students who in turn became teachers of the next generation of Indian students\, and many of their innovations inform contemporary movements toward sovereignty for Indian education.\n\nThis episode is sponsored by the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan Lifelong Learning program and is in recognition of Native American History Month.\n\nThe Clements Bookworm is a free monthly webinar series featuring guests discussing topics in American history.

Many features of corporations\, once grounded in democratic ideals\, now foster the unresponsiveness of these institutions. These lectures will include discussion of a diverse array of corporations: medieval guilds\, the English East India Company\, Alaska Native corporations\, and caste-based corporations in India.”\n\nRappaport lectures will take place on the following fall Fridays from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in West Hall Room 411.

SUMMARY:Performance:Bedouine
DESCRIPTION:“humble folk-pop brilliance” –Rolling Stone\n\nAs a child\, if you’re lucky\, summer afternoons stretch out like a yawn\, pool waves are as warm and engulfing as a blanket\, the safety of your mother’s arms feels endless. On her new album\, Neon Summer Skin\, Bedouine\, the project of Azniv Korkejian\, explores this feeling of safety long before one can fully understand the concept. Written with vivid\, honest and intimate imagery after visiting her family in Saudi Arabia\, it tells the story of family and upbringing\, and mourns the end of her childhood. There is a singular resonance and newfound heft in this music previously unheard in Bedouine’s discography. \n\nBedouine is known for making gentle\, lilting folk songs that build fingerpicked guitar melodies into tsunamis of emotion. Her masterful songwriting and timeless melodies have earned her praise from publications like Pitchfork\, who said her music “boasts a surreal calm and lived in glow\,” and Rolling Stone\, who lauded her “humble folk-pop brilliance\,” plus an NPR Tiny Desk Concert\, and tours with the likes of Fleet Foxes and Father John Misty. \n\nAs personal as her songs have been\, they’ve often built upon universal experiences. The writing on Neon Summer Skin\, however\, is full of specific memories: a neon swim suit\, beads of water dripping down tangled hair\, the blood of a lamb\, often sacrificed at Syrian weddings\, oozing across the pavement. “It was the first time I had the inclination to write a record about one main subject which gave me a clarity and motivation I hadn't quite had before.” \n\nBedouine started working on the record after a trip to Saudi Arabia to visit her parents. She correctly assumed it would be her last one there because her family was retiring to Armenia. “For my 20s and much of my 30s\, I couldn’t sit still\,” she says. “I would pack my car and move to a new place. I was so curious about my own independence that it just didn't occur to me for the longest time to mourn the past. But after that trip\, I came home and was so devastated. I couldn't place the feeling immediately\, but as I started writing\, I realized I was processing that I wasn’t ready to stop being somebody’s kid. \n\nShe co-produced most of the songs with her longtime collaborator\, Gus Seyffert\, and wrote with the sweet pop melodies of Todd Rundgren\, Karen Carpenter\, and Carole King in mind. She also worked on a couple of tracks with producer Jonathan Rado with Michael and Brian D’Addario of the Lemon Twigs. “It was important to me to try to approach some of the production of this record a little differently\, just to try something new\,” she says. The result is a fuller\, more playful sound\, at times grand and orchestral\, shimmery and surreal\, inflected with bits of psychedelia\, bossa nova\, and jazz.

SUMMARY:Performance:Blackthorn
DESCRIPTION:A Celtic tapestry\n\nMembers of the Michigan Irish American Hall of Fame\, Blackthorn offers shows that involve a musical ramble across Ireland. Traditional songs of emigration\, ballads\, shanties and jigs and reels combine with some of Ireland's best contemporary songs for a musical experience that is uniquely Irish. Each of the band's members plays multiple instruments\, including flute\, accordion\, tin whistle\, fiddle\, banjo\, cittern\, bodhran\, and more. These instruments complement the lead vocal of Belfast native Richard McMullan and the band's tight blend of four-part harmony. This band has been bringing a rich tapestry of Celtic music to southeast Michigan and beyond for 40 years\, and they're a must-see for those who want to know the deep traditions of Irish music in Michigan.

SUMMARY:Performance:Much Ado About Nothing
DESCRIPTION:Department of Musical Theatre students demonstrate their acting skills in this non-musical studio production of the play *Much Ado About Nothing*\, one of William Shakespeare’s most beloved and oft-performed comedies. When the soldiers of Don Pedro’s army return to Messina\, Italy\, romance is not far behind for young lovers Claudio and Hero. With the arrival of Don Pedro’s brother Don John\, however\, comes a plot that threatens to ruin their romance before it has a chance to really begin. Intertwined with this plot is the witty banter of Benedick and Beatrice\, who are drawn to and repulsed by each other in equal measure. \n\nWritten by William Shakespeare\nDirected by Jess Bogart\n
