SUMMARY:Performance:Pierre Bensusan - One Guitar\, One Voice - 50th Anniversary
DESCRIPTION:\"Pierre Bensusan is one of the truly gifted musicians of our time - he plays the guitar as if it was the very soul of himself.” –George Winston\n\nFrench-Algerian acoustic guitar virtuoso\, vocalist and composer Pierre Bensusan\, surnamed “Mister DADGAD”\, has taken his unique sound to all corners of the globe. Winner of the Independent Music Award for his triple live album \"Encore\"\, voted Best World Music Guitarist by Guitar Player Magazine reader’s Poll\, winner of the Rose d’Or at the Montreux Festival for his debut album\, Pierre is recognized as one of the greatest guitar players of the 21st century.\n\nWhen Michael Hedges titles one of his compositions “Bensusan”\, you know that the inspiration behind it must be special and Pierre Bensusan certainly is. Guitarists from Leo Kottke to Larry Corryel\, to Tuck Andress\, Tommy Emmanuel\, Mark Knopfler\, Andrew York\, Andy Timmons\, to Steve Lukather… have sung his praises\, and Steve Vai released three Bensusan albums on his label Favored Nations. And it's not just guitarists who are so inspired by Pierre's music\, as a recent studio collaboration with him on Donny Osmond’s latest album “Start Again” goes to show.\n\nIf World Music means the fusion of traditional\, contemporary\, jazz\, classical and pop music\, then Bensusan is one of the most eloquent World Music musicians of our time. A pianist in his beginnings then self-taught on the guitar\, the originality of his style makes him one of today’s greatest guitarists and composers for the instrument. \n\nBorn in French Algeria\, Pierre Bensusan is an adventurer of unusual lands. His almost “sacred” music is an intimate and orchestral hymn\, a solo crossing on a multi-shell Lowden guitar subjected to the natural elements with sound molecules and finger pulp on an ebony fingerboard for open tuning - an unique and transparent technique\, under the fingers of an adventurous pilgrim. Big emotion guaranteed.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:August 18 - October 24\, 2025Exhibition Reception: September 11\, 3-5 p.m.\n\"In their second year\, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the syllabus\, students 'develop the capacity to work independently by identifying\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.' Each student takes their own path\, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice—how do I manage my time? How much constraint vs. freedom do I thrive on? What subject matter do I care about most deeply? How do my ideas about my future goals intersect with the work I want to make now? At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review\, and a faculty panel offers individualized feedback. \nUntil now\, the classroom studios and review rooms have been the only place to catch a glimpse of the art and design work resulting from this pivotal course. Last year\, Associate Dean for Academic Programs Rebecca Strzelec proposed something new: an exhibition installed throughout the Art &amp\; Architecture Building during the summer that would celebrate Second Year Studio work and help to welcome the community back in the Fall. This inaugural 2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases our rising third-years and transfer students\, and invites first-years and other newcomers to explore both the building\, and the creative possibilities ahead. The show features 44 students who have volunteered to participate\, yet it honors every Stamps major who reaches the SYS milestone. \nThe pieces on view span a wide array of media and capture a specific moment in each maker’s path—experiments in previously unfamiliar methods\, emergent passions\, creative risks taken\, iterations and reiterations\, and the seeds of so much future work.\"\n- Sally Clegg\, Lecturer and Student Exhibitions Coordinator\nExhibiting Artists and Designers\n\nRobin Beaney\nAdi Behar\nDavid Byun\nZoë Corley\nChloe Dennis\nViktoriya Finyak\nMaria Elena García-Murguía\nElisa Gasser\nOlivia Glynn\nRoe Halbert\nNadav Havilio\nDee Holmes\nRuby Hough\nUrvi Joshi\nEunice Kim\nHannah Kryzhan\nBen Levitsky\nJoyce Liu\nKatelyn Ma\nAlexandria Mainor\nErin Malone\nSummer Mansi\nCheyenne Moore\nElla Moxon\nShafiq Muqit\nAlex Nguyen\nAnna Noh\nLeanna Mokihana Paik\nEva Park\nMichelle Peng\nEliana Pettigrew\nZainab Rahmani\nOlivia Reed\nSky Roberts\nZachary Sebestyen\nOliver Lee St Cyr\nSophie Stillwagon\nVeronica Weinberg\nCaitlin Weingarden\nNala Arielle White\nAriel Williams\nSilas Williams\nKatherine Xu\nJoy Yang\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Behind the Curve: Rainbows and the Science and Culture of Color
DESCRIPTION:We have many significant books from the history of our understanding of rainbows and color theory\, from the writings of scholar Ḥasan Ibn al-Haytham to Isaac Newton’s 1704 Opticks. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Beyond Survival
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Beyond Survival\, an exhibition of works by incarcerated artists in Michigan presented by PCAP co-founder Janie Paul and the Flint Institute of the Arts. The exhibit opens May 30th and runs through September 14th. \n\nThe pieces span nearly 30 years\, many of them having been featured in our Annual Exhibition.\n\n\"Through drawings\, paintings\, and sculptures made with simple materials\, artists expose the harsh realities of incarceration while imagining life beyond prison. These works reveal a longing for home and family\, joy and beauty\, connections to nature\, flights of the imagination\, and journeys toward freedom—acts of creation made despite and in direct response to carceral conditions.\"

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Student Dissertation Defense - Divergence in Gene Expression Plasticity
DESCRIPTION:Defense Preview:\nOrganisms respond to shifts in their environment by changing the abundance of different mRNA transcripts in their cells\, a process called \"gene expression plasticity\". We understand that gene expression plasticity itself can evolve---the same environmental shift can cause different patterns of gene expression plasticity in different genetic backgrounds. We don't\, however\, know much about how gene expression plasticity tends to evolve. Is divergence in gene expression plasticity common between closely related species? Are certain genes more or less likely to experience evolutionary changes to their patterns of expression plasticity? In this dissertation defense\, I characterize gene expression plasticity divergence in two yeast species: the baker's yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae and one of its closest related species\, Saccharomyces paradoxus. To describe the extent of gene expression plasticity divergence\, I cluster gene expression responses to six different environments. I find that each of the six environments identifies a unique set of at least 100 genes that have diverged in gene expression plasticity. Interestingly\, the genes most likely to experience this expression plasticity divergence are the genes with the fewest connections in the regulatory network. My work demonstrates that different environments can reveal hidden dimensions of molecular evolution\, and that network connectivity is associated with more robust expression plasticity over evolutionary time.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:IOE 899 - Jingwen Hu\, University of Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Hu is a Professor at IOE and a Research Professor at UMTRI. His research interests primarily focus on injury biomechanics and traffic injury prevention by a multidisciplinary approach using a combination of experimental\, numerical\, and epidemiological methods. Dr. Hu is an author of 150+ peer-reviewed journal and conference papers with four Best Paper Awards. His research has been funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration\, the National Science Foundation\, the National Institute of Justice\, the Department of Defense\, and the Auto Industry.\n\nAbstract:\nRecent literature has shown that there is a growing concern of safety disparity in motor-vehicle crashes (MVCs)\, but technological tools for addressing this issue are limited. In particular\, females\, the elderly\, and obese occupants are among the vulnerable populations who are often at increased risk of death and serious injury compared with mid-size young men in MVCs. This presentation will introduce the parametric finite element (FE) human and vehicle modeling work conducted in the past decade\, along with recent machine-learning models and design optimizations. The results demonstrated the effectiveness of a population-based virtual testing framework on improving safety disparity among the diverse population.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Significant Alumni Award Featured Lecture with Laila Poisson\, PhD '09
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Biostatistics is pleased to invite you to join us in honoring Laila Poisson\, PhD '09 at the inaugural Michigan Biostatistics Significant Alumni Award Lecture.A pre-lecture reception will be held beginning at 3:00 p.m. in 1627 SPH I for all attendees of the lecture\, which will begin at 3:30 p.m. in 1690 SPH I and will feature the presentation of the inaugural Significant Alumni Award.SIGN UP FOR MEETINGS WITH DR. POISSON HERE.TITLE: Being in CollaborationABSTRACT: There are many ways to be a biostatistician. Beyond whether you identify as a Bayesian or frequentist - beyond whether your expertise is in time-to-event analysis\, missing data\, or genetics - we each have a role in the broader community of science and research. In this presentation we will explore the role of the biostatistician as a team scientist and collaborative researcher. While examples will be drawn from experiences in an academic medical center\, the principles of communication\, leadership\, statistical expertise\, and domain knowledge apply across settings. Here\, at the beginning of a new academic year\, let’s take a moment to celebrate our unique abilities and the joy of seeing their impacts – big and small – in the world around us.ABOUT THE PRESENTER: Dr. Laila Poisson\, PhD\, exemplifies the collaborative nature of biostatistics in addressing issues of significance in public health and medicine using data and science. A 2009 graduate of the Biostatistics PhD program at Michigan\, Dr. Poisson has since become a nationally recognized leader in neuro-oncology research\, data integration\, and biostatistics education. She currently serves as Vice Chair of Biostatistics in the Department of Public Health Sciences and a Senior Scientist in the Hermelin Brain Tumor Center at Henry Ford Health in Detroit. In parallel\, she is a Research Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Michigan State University.Click here to read more about Dr. Poisson and learn more about the Significant Alumni Award.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Biomedical Engineering Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThe metabolic underpinnings of immune cells in various inflamed tissues\, such as the implant microenvironment or the diseased heart\, are poorly understood. For instance\, polylactide (PLA) is the most widely used biopolymer in medicine. Yet\, for decades\, PLA had been thought to activate immune cells by reducing surrounding pH because PLA biodegrades into monomers and oligomers of lactic acid. During my talk\, I will discuss an alternative paradigm underscoring immune cell metabolism (immunometabolism) as the pivotal determinant of the proinflammatory versus pro-regenerative tissue microenvironment with biodegradable and non-biodegradable biomaterial examples. Further related to tissue engineering\, I will present on reversing established cardiac dysfunction and fibrosis in heart failure (following myocardial infarction) via targeted and enzyme-responsive nanomaterials. Finally\, I will unveil my vision to revolutionize therapeutic strategies for the various phenotypes of heart failure by leveraging the metabolic underpinnings of immune and stromal cell populations\, thereby engineering next-generation clinical interventions that shape the future of medicine.

The rainbow has had many different cultural interpretations over the years\, and most recently has become synonymous with gay pride\, appearing all over each June.\n\nHatcher Gallery Exhibit Room Hours:\nSunday\, 2-8pm\nMonday-Thursday\, 9am-8pm\nFriday\, 9am-4pm\nSaturday\, 11am-5pm

SUMMARY:Presentation:Towards End-to-End Safe Motion Planning for High-Dimensional Robot Systems
DESCRIPTION:Committee Co-Chairs: Ram Vasudevan and Talia Moore\n\nAbstract: \nSafe motion planning is essential for deploying autonomous robots in real‑world environments\, whether navigating cluttered warehouses\, crowded public spaces\, or unstructured outdoor settings. To perform reliably in these scenarios\, robots must generate plans in real time\, offer formal safety guarantees without undue conservatism\, handle environmental uncertainty robustly\, and tightly integrate visual perception with motion planning so they can react to changes as they occur.\n\nThere are several challenges associated with achieving safe autonomous navigation of mobile robots. First\, generating dynamically feasible trajectories for high‑dimensional systems is computationally demanding\, often requiring significant processing time to produce high‑quality solutions. Many safe motion planners treat these trajectories as high‑level plans (or waypoints) and rely on a lower‑level planner to enforce safety during execution. Consequently\, overall performance hinges on the quality of the high‑level plan so suboptimal plans can force frequent replanning or emergency halts. Second\, accounting for environmental uncertainty\, especially in dynamic settings with uncertain agent motions remains difficult. Planners typically use worst‑case bounds on uncertainty\, inflating safety margins and yielding overly conservative behaviors. Third\, standard perception pipelines convert images into occupancy grids or decompose the scene into a set of convex primitives to simplify planning. These either discard fine geometric detail which may be useful for downstream task planning\, or require significant and expensive preprocessing.\n\nThis dissertation proposes a cohesive suite of tools to address each challenge.First I present a collection of novel optimization‑based trajectory generators for high‑dimensional systems\, built on the Affine Geometric Heat Flow (AGHF) PDE\, which reformulates trajectory optimization as a curve‑shortening process solved by forward‑simulating an ODE system to its extremal curve. By combining pseudospectral collocation with spatial vector algebra\, this framework dramatically reduces function evaluations and produces high‑quality\, dynamically feasible trajectories in seconds for systems with dozens of degrees of freedom (e.g.\, 44‑dimensional legged robots) Second\, I introduce a risk‑aware planning methodology that rigorously quantifies and bounds uncertainty via chance‑constrained optimization and reachability analysis. This method runs in real-time both in simulation and on hardware\, and offers formal safety guarantees while avoiding the excessive conservatism of traditional uncertainty‑aware safe planners. Third\, I propose a novel Gaussian splatting representation that allows probabilistic planning in radiance fields. By reformulating radiance field representations into a normalized Gaussian framework\, and deriving tight upper bounds on collision probability this approach unifies perception and motion planning: the robot is able to use a single representation to reason about obstacle geometry while maintaining dense visual information that is useful for downstream task planning. Additionally\, I present how this method can be applied on both fixed-base and mobile manipulators. Experiments in cluttered scenes and on a real‑world fixed base manipulator demonstrate significant improvements in planning speed and collision avoidance. Together\, these contributions move us toward a unified architecture for safe\, real‑time motion planning of high‑dimensional robotic systems in uncertain environments while closing the loop between perception and action with robust safety guarantees.\n\nIn person and on Zoom.\nZoom passcode: saferobo

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Disrupting the Information Order in Health Care: Institutions\, Policy Regimes\, and the Value of Data
DESCRIPTION:The 21st Century Cures Act API Rule seeks to increase the interoperability of patients’ electronic health information (EHI) – individually identifiable patient information related to medical treatment\, which can enable actors outside the institutional context and special data protections of health care to gain access to private data. We examine stakeholders’ comments during the Notice of Public Rulemaking on the Cures Act API Rule to show not only how institutional context shapes their views\, but also how the change to data flows may also disrupt established institutional meanings and mechanisms. The technical change of the API Rule leads insiders to defend\, while enabling outsiders to disrupt institutions in health care. We show how disruption to existing institutional logics\, relationships\, and the information order challenges professional control of information\, threatens provider-patient relationships\, and upsets the property rights and data protections of private data in ways that may threaten the existing institutional order of health care in the United States.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Cylindrical networks and total nonnegativity (Combinatorics Seminar)
DESCRIPTION:A matrix is called totally nonnegative if all the determinants of its square submatrices are nonnegative. One can show\, using the celebrated Lindström-Gessel-Viennot lemma\, that any invertible totally nonnegative matrix can be realized as the path matrix of a planar\, acyclic digraph with positive weights. A result by Brenti broadens this statement to include non-invertible\, non-square matrices. Lam and Pylyavskyy later introduced a notion of total positivity for matrices with real polynomial entries\, and showed that when they are invertible\, they are representable by cylindrical (rather than planar) digraphs. We expand their result to include non-square\, non-invertible matrices as well. The proof involves certain combinatorially-defined matrix functions called Temperley-Lieb immanants.

DESCRIPTION:Nutrient management is a critical part of addressing the harmful algal bloom (HAB) crisis sweeping across the globe.Lake Erie\, like many large\, shallow lakes\, suffers from annual cyanobacterial HABs. While phosphorus to the western basin are codified\, none exist for nitrogen (a key component of toxin structure and biomass)\, in part due to lack of information about processing rates. This talk will discuss the knowledge gaps for nitrogen cycling in Lake Erie and the ways my research group has worked to fill those gaps over the last decade\, including evaluating external and internal nitrogen loading and removal. Additionally\, we are working to address a major knowledge gap—creating a predictive model for toxin concentrations—by applying internal and external nutrient processing rates and loads.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSAS Lecture Series | “They Have My *Kundli*”: Understanding Urban Indian Social Media Users’ Beliefs about Social Media Algorithms
DESCRIPTION:Attend in person or via Zoom: https://myumi.ch/y1qjR \n\nThis talk will explore how urban Indians make sense of algorithms and the role they play in personalizing and amplifying social media content. Based on interviews with 30 social media users\, it will examine users’ knowledge of\, attitudes toward\, and practices with algorithms. It will detail people’s complex views of algorithms and their social impact\, informed by long-standing cultural beliefs equating technology with globalization and aspiration as well as a degree of critical digital literacy\, especially among younger people. The talk will also highlight users’ beliefs about the role algorithms play in suppressing or amplifying content and how algorithms align with or contravene their content preferences\, including a reflection on how these preferences reinforce deep-seated views about gender and class.\n \n Pranav Malhotra is an Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan Department of Communication and Media. His research focuses on how the affordances of social and mobile media intersect with cultural and relational norms to influence how people engage with information and each other in mediated spaces\, especially in understudied social and political contexts. In particular\, his work has looked at how urban Indians make sense of their everyday engagement with social media. Malhotra’s research has been published in leading journals like *Social Media+Society*\, *Journal of Computer-mediated Communication*\, *Communication Monographs*\, *Political Communication*\, and *International Journal of Communication*.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at tinagrif@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Performance:Tyler Ramsey
DESCRIPTION:Gentle indie-folk from the former lead guitarist from Band of Horses\n\nTyler Ramsey is a singer-songwriter and guitarist known for his evocative\, genre-blending sound that fuses modern folk\, rock\, and alternative influences. Based outside of Asheville\, North Carolina\, Ramsey gained recognition as a key member of Band of Horses\, contributing to their soaring indie-folk sound across three studio albums\, each of which included Ramsey originals including Grammy-nominated \"Infinite Arms\" (2010). As a songwriter and guitarist\, his intricate playing and introspective lyricism became a defining element of the band's music.\n\nWith masterful guitar work and a gift for storytelling\, Tyler Ramsey continues to carve out his own space in the world of folk and indie rock. He has released a series of critically acclaimed albums\, including \"For the Morning\" (2019)\, which showcased his signature blend of fingerpicked guitar\, pedal steel\, and atmospheric rock textures. His latest album\, \"New Lost Ages\"\, marks a new creative milestone\, produced by Phil Ek (Fleet Foxes\, The Shins\, Father John Misty) and recorded in Seattle’s Avast Recording Co. The project captures Ramsey's evolution as both a songwriter and musician\, balancing moments of quiet introspection with grand\, sweeping arrangements.\n\nRamsey’s music is deeply rooted in nature and personal experience\, with much of \"New Lost Ages\" inspired by his life in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Seeking solace during a tumultuous period\, he retreated to a secluded cabin near his home\, channeling his reflections on change\, fatherhood\, and artistic perseverance into a collection of deeply resonant songs. The resulting album\, with contributions from musicians like Morgan Henderson (Fleet Foxes)\, Sean T. Lane(Ann Wilson)\, and Carl Broemel (My Morning Jacket)\, captures both the intimacy of his songwriting and the expansive sonic landscapes he crafts.\n\nTyler’s music\, praised by outlets such as Relix and NPR\, resonates with listeners seeking depth\, honesty\, and a connection to something timeless. \"New Lost Ages\" stands as a testament to his journey—one that embraces both the uncertainties of life and the enduring power of song

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Temperature Extremes Cause Deforestation: The Borlaug Hypothesis Meets Global Climate Change (joint with Allan Hsiao\, Benjamin Olken\, and Jacob Moscona)
DESCRIPTION:This paper investigates the relationship between rising global extreme heat exposure and deforestation. Combining global data on deforestation and daily temperature realizations at the one-degree grid-cell level from 2001-2019\, we show that each additional degree day above 32 °C increases deforestation at the forest edge by 0.25 percentage points. These effects accumulate over time and are driven by tropical regions. Consistent with heat-induced declines in agricultural productivity as the driving mechanism\, we show direct evidence that extreme heat reduces a satellite-based crop productivity measure and find that the effect is larger for the most heat-sensitive crops and the crop-country pairs with the most inelastic demand. We also show that this deforestation is accompanied by cropland expansion using both global satellite data on land use patterns and three rounds of agricultural census data from Brazil. Back-of-the-envelope calculations attribute about 2-3% of global frontier deforestation\, and up to 15% in the Amazon and Congo hotspots\, to recent temperature extremes. Taken together\, our findings support the view that climate-induced productivity losses lead to intensification within regions rather than reallocation across regions.
