DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the opening reception of Diane Lavoie’s debut Michigan exhibition *Momentary Landscapes*.  Lavoie will be in conversation with curator Amanda Krugliak about her art practice. \n\nAbout the exhibition\nDiane Lavoie’s large-scale textile artworks are made entirely from up-cycled materials and are often placed in direct visual conversation with the natural landscape. Through the artist's choice of materials and visual subject matter\, the springtime installation *Momentary Landscape* is intended to emphasize important work surrounding sustainability\, climate change\, and environmental issues through the arts. The project is scheduled to unfold in the lobby of the South Thayer Building during exam week\, offering students and visitors a restorative\, reflective\, and joyful experience through public art installation.\n\nAbout the artist\nDiane Lavoie is a North American visual artist based in Berlin\, Germany. Her art represents a dialogue between the natural and artificial world\, and explores the boundaries between reality and perception. In her practice\, Lavoie creates large-scale\, textile representations of natural environments in contrast and connection with the actual environs surrounding them. Lavoie holds an MFA in painting from California State University Long Beach and a BFA in illustration from Massachusetts College of Art. Her work has been exhibited internationally and is held in private and public collections in the US and Europe.

The AUP curriculum is designed to cultivate students’ professional\, operational\, and leadership skills for careers in public service\, with particular emphasis on service in the Auxiliary\, commissioning into active duty or reserve service\, and maritime professions.\n \nImportant parking instructions for non-UM visitors:\nAllow extra time for parking. Metered street parking is available along East Washington Street directly in front of the building. However\, parking can be difficult. DESCRIPTION:Short in length but limitless in imagination\, all 24 of Claude Debussy’s magical preludes for piano are performed by one of their supreme living interpreters\, Jean-Yves Thibaudet.\n\nDebussy opened up a new universe of sound in his two books of exquisitely conceived\, ravishingly colored musical cameos\, and few pianists inhabit that revolutionary universe more fully than Thibaudet. Each of these brief works is painted in subtle shades\, hazy harmonies\, and daring textures\, with inspiration ranging from paintings and travel to Dickens and Peter Pan.\n\nThibaudet has lived with Debussy’s Preludes for his “entire life\,” learning some as a child and recording the full set more than 30 years ago. He closes the 25/26 Choral Union Series with this legendary program in his first solo recital with UMS since 2009.

DESCRIPTION:“Music\, poetry\, and observations aimed directly at your soul” –Melissa Clarke Americana Highways\n\nAs a babe Jeffrey Martin sought out solitude as often as he could find it. He’s always been that way\, and he has never understood the whole phenomenon of smiling in pictures\, although he is a very happy guy. One night in middle school he stayed up under the covers with a flashlight and a DiscMan\, listening to Reba McEntire’s 'That’s the Night that the Lights Went Out in Georgia' on repeat until the DiscMan ran out of batteries. That night he became a songwriter\, although he didn’t actually write a song until years later. After high school he spent a few years distracting himself from having to gather up the courage to do what he knew he had to do.\n\nEventually he found his way to a writing degree\, and then a teaching degree. He wrote most days like his life depended on it\, all sorts of things\, not just songs\, but songs too. He fell in love with teaching high school English\, which was fantastic because he never thought he’d actually come to truly love it. His students were fierce and unstoppable forces of noise and curiosity\, and for all that they took from him in sleep and sense\, they gave him a hundred times back in sparks and humility.  \n\nAll the while he was also playing truckloads of music. There was one weekend where he flew to LA while grading essays on the plane\, played two shows\, and then flew back home\, still grading essays\, and woke up to teach at 5 am on Monday morning. Jeffrey spent nights on end sitting up in bed\, and then sitting on the front porch\, staring off into the dark\, wondering if he could bear to leave teaching to go on tour full time. Eventually his brain caught up with what his guts had known for months. With tears in his eyes he announced to his students that he wouldn’t be back the following year\, and that he didn’t feel right hollering at them to chase their dreams at all cost if he wasn’t going to do the same.\n\nJeffrey Martin tours full time now. DESCRIPTION:\"Artist’s statement: For centuries\, hair has been critical to how human beings understand racial categories\, gender designations\, and class status. For Black women in particular\, hair has and continues to be tied to ethnic identity and a history of self-determination\, social justice\, and survival. Thus\, chemotherapy-induced hair loss is a devastating event for Black patients who are also more likely to be diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer subtypes necessitating chemotherapy\, carrying a 40% increased risk of dying from breast cancer.\n\nRedefining the ‘crown’: Approaching chemotherapy-induced alopecia among Black patients with breast cancer” started as a manuscript published in the scientific journal Cancer. But the work could not stop there. “Redefining the Crown” then metamorphosed into a photo essay project aimed at exploring the breast cancer journeys of six Black women and their experiences with hair loss due to chemotherapy. Though the project centers the experience of Black women\, we also acknowledge that breast cancer and chemotherapy-induced alopecia impact individuals of all genders. While the goal is to illuminate the unique stories of Black women who are affected uncommonly by this common disease\, the project is also a call to action regarding the disproportionate breast cancer-related mortality facing Black communities.\n\nIn this portraiture series\, photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks. This exhibition examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy and how their sense of cultural pride and personal identity have been redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThese survivors have redefined their own crowns. Each photograph becomes a part of Soleimani’s rich visual storytelling.      \n\n*Flyways *presents a series of new photographs that include images evocative of her family’s history and migration story in juxtaposition with images of injured birds that are representative of Soleimani’s work as a wildlife rehabilitator. DESCRIPTION:Lynn Galbreath\, a Detroit based artist who grew up in Argentina\, is a former recipient of the Creative Artists’ Grant from the Arts Foundation of Michigan and the Michigan Individual Artist Grant from Michigan Council For The Arts. Galbreath’s work has been showcased locally\, nationally and internationally in over 20 solo/two person and over 100 group exhibitions.\n\nGalbreath has an M.F.A. from the James Pearson Duffy Department of Art\, Art History\, & Design\, Wayne State University\, Detroit\, MI\; and a B.F.A. with Permanent K-12 Certification from The Gwen Frostic School of Art\, Western MI University\, Kalamazoo\, MI. Galbreath has chaperoned eleven intensive\, immersive art experiences to Italy\, Spain\, France\, Belgium\, England\, Germany\, the Netherlands\, Austria\, and the Czech Republic. Lynn is a retired Adjunct Associate Professor of Studio Art from Oakland University\, where she has been on the faculty of the Department of Art & Art History since 2000. Lynn has also instructed studio art and design at the College For Creative Studies\, University of Detroit Mercy — School of Architecture\, Macomb Community College\, Wayne State University\, and Bloomfield University School. Her work can be seen in the collections of Oakland University\, Wayne State University\, Detroit Receiving Hospital\, Children’s Hospital of Michigan\, Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital and numerous private collections.\n\nThis exhibition consists of works from a variety of series created by Galbreath over the years: Telegraph\, Storyboard\, and Working Hard for a Living. Each series represents a unique exploration of themes\, techniques\, and social commentaries that reflect Galbreath’s artistic journey and concerns for the world.\n\nTelegraph explores the aesthetic visual weights and balances between harmony and content\, diving deep into how visual elements can convey messages and emotions. This series invites viewers to reflect on the way art communicates through its formal qualities\, as well as its narrative possibilities. The careful interplay of shapes\, colors\, and textures in these works prompts an examination of the viewer's perception and emotional response. By utilizing abstract forms\, Galbreath encourages an engagement that goes beyond mere observation\, seeking to provoke thought about how aesthetic choices influence understanding and meaning.\n\nOn the other hand\, Storyboard is a series of image-driven installation paintings that vary greatly in size\, showcasing Galbreath’s versatility and creative ingenuity. By portraying these self-employed individuals\, often operating within informal economies\, Galbreath draws attention to the unique challenges they face. These individuals frequently contend with low\, inconsistent incomes\, long hours\, and sometimes exploitative conditions\, fostering a sense of solidarity with those who labor under such circumstances.\n\nFurthermore\, the series invites viewers to confront the broader societal structures that contribute to these inequities. Galbreath's work serves not only as a tribute but also as a call to action to consider how our consumer habits and economic policies affect the livelihoods of others. DESCRIPTION:View a diverse array of artifacts which were created to communicate with and call upon various unseen\, supernatural forces for aid and protection. While the objects on display are disparate at first glance\, ranging from lead tablets and amulets to papyrus and parchment leaves\, they all share a common thread: they have long been labeled as \"magical\" in traditional Western scholarship.\n\nHowever\, each of these artifacts is better understood on a broad spectrum of ancient ritual\, from subversive and transgressive acts to highly social and visible ones. The exhibit highlights the objects’ oft-overlooked material dimensions\, asking us to consider how qualities like color\, texture\, and weight shaped an object’s perceived efficacy and meaning. \n\nThis exhibit was a collaboration\, and displays items from several University of Michigan units: the library’s Special Collections Research Center and Papyrology Collection\, the Museum of Natural History\, and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. SUMMARY:Presentation:A Novel Construction for $\mathfrak{sl}_4$ Webs
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The standard monomial basis for $\mathfrak{sl}_r$-invariant polynomials is indexed by rectangular standard Young tableaux\, but it lacks rotational invariance. Although promotion induces a cyclic action on tableaux\, a more symmetric basis is desirable. For $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ and $\mathfrak{sl}_3$\, such bases are given by non-crossing matchings and non-elliptic $\mathfrak{sl}_3$ webs\, respectively. In the case of $\mathfrak{sl}_4$\, a web basis has recently been constructed using hourglass plabic graphs\, but this approach relies on intricate growth rules and does not readily generalize to higher rank.\n\nIn this thesis\, we introduce a simpler and more direct construction of $\mathfrak{sl}_4$ webs. Starting from a rectangular four-row standard Young tableau\, we construct the associated web by stacking the $\mathfrak{sl}_3$ webs corresponding to the top three rows and the bottom three rows\, identifying along the non-crossing matching determined by the middle two rows. We prove that the resulting web is fully reduced and lies in the same equivalence class as the $\mathfrak{sl}_4$ web obtained via growth rules.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nConventional Li-ion battery electrolytes have been designed to optimize numerous desirable properties\, including interfacial and thermal stability\, conductivity\, and low flammability. However\, all conventional liquid Li + -bearing electrolytes still possess low Li + transference (t + ) numbers\, where current passed through them is primarily carried by the counteranion\, resulting in large concentration gradients that limit battery performance\, particularly at high discharge and charging rates.\n\nThe development of high t + electrolytes—those in which most (or all) current is carried by the Li + ion—could enable safer battery cycling\, faster charging rates\, and thicker\, more energy-dense cathode designs in Li-ion batteries. This presentation will outline our attempts to develop high t + electrolytes using two strategies. In the first\, Li-neutralized polyanions are used as a salt in nonaqueous liquid electrolytes (so-called nonaqueous polyelectrolyte solutions). In this configuration\, Li ions\, when appropriately solvated\, have hydrodynamic radii much smaller than the polymer chain’s size\, ostensibly allowing them to diffuse or migrate faster than their appended counteranions\, and hence enable high t + electrolytes. Ultimately\, I show this picture to be oversimplified\, and that anion-anion and cation-anion correlations severely limit the t + of high conductivity polyelectrolyte solutions. In the second\, we suspend Li-ion conducting inorganic particles\, which have both high conductivity and unity Li + transference numbers\, in organic electrolytes.\n\nThe development of these organic-inorganic composite electrolytes could enable solid state batteries\, an important emerging energy storage technology that has been hindered by the poor processability of thin-film pure inorganic ion conductors. Although the composite electrolyte field is highly active due to the processability advantages composite electrolytes possess\, researchers are still puzzled about why\, in most cases\, no significant improvement in the electrolyte conductivity is observed after incorporating inorganic particles\, whose conductivity is orders of magnitude larger than that of polymer electrolytes at room temperature.\n\nI will present our efforts to quantify phase contributions to ion transport in model inorganic-organic systems\, ultimately showing that three critical factors govern the conductivity of composite electrolytes: Li + -desolvation dynamics\, Li + -transference number in the organic phase\, and the ceramic particle size. Using this knowledge\, we show that certain composite configurations have enhanced conductivity and substantially higher transference numbers than the pure model organic electrolyte alone.\n\nSpeaker Bio:\nBryan McCloskey is the Department Chair and Warren &amp\; Katharine Schlinger Distinguished Professor in Chemical Engineering in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of California\, Berkeley. He also holds a joint appointment as a Faculty Chemical Engineer in the Energy Storage and Distributed Resources Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. His laboratory explores numerous applications of electrochemistry to energy sustainability\, conversion\, and storage. Current projects focus on elucidating the fundamental electrochemistry of metal-air batteries and understanding a variety of challenges facing Li-ion and Na-ion batteries\, including high voltage cathode-electrolyte interfacial stability and organic-inorganic composites for solid-state batteries. He has co-authored more than 175 articles and has won numerous awards for his research\, including The Electrochemical Society Charles Tobias Award\, The International Society of Electrochemistry Tajima Prize\, and the VW/BASF Science Award- Electrochemistry. In this discussion\, I will explore how the NIH and FDA are advocating for new alternative methodologies (NAMs) to reduce or replace animal testing. I will highlight recent advancements in technologies such as stem cells\, organoids\, and microphysiological systems (MPS)\, along with the roles of clinical genomics and AI/ML. Additionally\, I will examine how these platforms can collaboratively enhance our understanding of rare orphan diseases\, facilitate drug discovery\, support precision medicine\, and enable clinical trials in a dish (CTiD).\n\nAbout the Speaker:\nJoseph C. Wu\, MD\, PhD is Director of Stanford Cardiovascular Institute and Simon H. Stertzer\, MD\, Professor of Medicine and Radiology at Stanford University. Dr. Wu received his MD from Yale University and PhD (Molecular & Medical Pharmacology) at University of California\, Los Angeles. He is board certified in cardiovascular medicine. His lab works on genomics\, stem cells/organoids\, AI/ML\, and drug discovery. The main goals are to (i) understand basic disease mechanisms\, (ii) implement precision medicine for patients\, and (iii) accelerate drug discovery via “new alternative methodologies” (NAMs) and “clinical trial in a dish” (CTiD) concept. Dr. Wu has published >700 manuscripts with H-index of 147 on Google scholar. He is listed as top 0.1% of highly cited researchers by Web of Science for past 7 years (2018-2024). Dr. Wu has received several awards\, including the NIH Director’s New Innovator Award\, NIH Roadmap Transformative Award\, Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) given out by President Obama at the White House\, American Heart Association (AHA) Distinguished Scientist Award\, AHA Merit Award\, and Burroughs Wellcome Foundation Innovation in Regulatory Science Award. DESCRIPTION:Summary: In a phenotypic and bioinformatic survey of the natural history of Hesperis matronalis across southern Michigan I found that both land cover type and longitude are positively correlated with infection of TuMV at the phenotypic level. However\, this finding is likely highly correlated with the land cover types further to the north being categorized as Natural\, and land cover types at the southern range of the sampling area Agricultural. Additionally\, bioinformatic analysis found that there are differences in the abundance of certain taxa across the diseased and normal phenotypes. The results of an all-by-all BLAST of the longest assemblies of TuMV were visualized and suggestive of strain variation across populations of H. matronalis. These findings are important to our understanding of how biotic and abiotic interactions influence the ecology and evolution of plant viruses in wild populations. To gain a deeper ecological understanding of the frequency of TuMV in wild populations\, future studies should focus on the ecology of the aphid vectors.

This year’s gathering is part of IRWG’s 30th anniversary celebration\, guided by the theme Resistance Is Fertile.\n\nResistance Is Fertile honors the founding moment of IRWG while speaking to the present. The institute was established because faculty members believed that research on women\, gender\, and sexuality required an institutional commitment to thrive. That belief was itself a form of resistance—to disciplinary silos\, to marginalization\, and to the idea that such scholarship was peripheral. The theme reminds us that resistance is not merely reactive\; when rooted in collaboration and sustained through infrastructure\, it produces knowledge that reshapes disciplines\, institutions\, and public life.\n\nThe symposium will open on the evening of April 23 with a keynote address by Dr. Brittney Cooper\, Professor of Women’s\, Gender\, and Sexuality Studies and Africana Studies at Rutgers University and founding director of the Race and Gender Equity (RAGE) Lab. Dr. Cooper is the award-winning author of Eloquent Rage and Beyond Respectability and a widely recognized public intellectual whose work bridges Black feminist thought\, cultural criticism\, and public scholarship.

DESCRIPTION:\"Artist’s statement: For centuries\, hair has been critical to how human beings understand racial categories\, gender designations\, and class status. For Black women in particular\, hair has and continues to be tied to ethnic identity and a history of self-determination\, social justice\, and survival. Thus\, chemotherapy-induced hair loss is a devastating event for Black patients who are also more likely to be diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer subtypes necessitating chemotherapy\, carrying a 40% increased risk of dying from breast cancer.\n\nRedefining the ‘crown’: Approaching chemotherapy-induced alopecia among Black patients with breast cancer” started as a manuscript published in the scientific journal Cancer. But the work could not stop there. “Redefining the Crown” then metamorphosed into a photo essay project aimed at exploring the breast cancer journeys of six Black women and their experiences with hair loss due to chemotherapy. Though the project centers the experience of Black women\, we also acknowledge that breast cancer and chemotherapy-induced alopecia impact individuals of all genders. While the goal is to illuminate the unique stories of Black women who are affected uncommonly by this common disease\, the project is also a call to action regarding the disproportionate breast cancer-related mortality facing Black communities.\n\nIn this portraiture series\, photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks. This exhibition examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy and how their sense of cultural pride and personal identity have been redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThese survivors have redefined their own crowns. More profound than the new hairstyles they don after hair loss are the invisible crowns that they choose to wear each day: gratitude\, faith\, and resilience. What do their words mean to you? From naturalization classes to festivals of nations\, from breaking new ground for churches to mundane tableaus of Thanksgiving and Christmas\, this range of photographs offers a glimpse of a community in the making\, one that sought to preserve a memory of its Ottoman past even while anticipating an American future.

Drafted by the Confederation Congress at the same time as the Constitution\, the Ordinance outlined a framework for government in the northwest territory\, defined the rights guaranteed in that territory\, and created a process for admitting new states to the United States. The display offers a rare opportunity to view a document that helped shape the ideals and values of the young nation.

DESCRIPTION:Lynn Galbreath\, a Detroit based artist who grew up in Argentina\, is a former recipient of the Creative Artists’ Grant from the Arts Foundation of Michigan and the Michigan Individual Artist Grant from Michigan Council For The Arts. Galbreath’s work has been showcased locally\, nationally and internationally in over 20 solo/two person and over 100 group exhibitions.\n\nGalbreath has an M.F.A. from the James Pearson Duffy Department of Art\, Art History\, & Design\, Wayne State University\, Detroit\, MI\; and a B.F.A. with Permanent K-12 Certification from The Gwen Frostic School of Art\, Western MI University\, Kalamazoo\, MI. Galbreath has chaperoned eleven intensive\, immersive art experiences to Italy\, Spain\, France\, Belgium\, England\, Germany\, the Netherlands\, Austria\, and the Czech Republic. Lynn is a retired Adjunct Associate Professor of Studio Art from Oakland University\, where she has been on the faculty of the Department of Art & Art History since 2000. Lynn has also instructed studio art and design at the College For Creative Studies\, University of Detroit Mercy — School of Architecture\, Macomb Community College\, Wayne State University\, and Bloomfield University School. Her work can be seen in the collections of Oakland University\, Wayne State University\, Detroit Receiving Hospital\, Children’s Hospital of Michigan\, Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital and numerous private collections.\n\nThis exhibition consists of works from a variety of series created by Galbreath over the years: Telegraph\, Storyboard\, and Working Hard for a Living. Each series represents a unique exploration of themes\, techniques\, and social commentaries that reflect Galbreath’s artistic journey and concerns for the world.\n\nTelegraph explores the aesthetic visual weights and balances between harmony and content\, diving deep into how visual elements can convey messages and emotions. This series invites viewers to reflect on the way art communicates through its formal qualities\, as well as its narrative possibilities. The careful interplay of shapes\, colors\, and textures in these works prompts an examination of the viewer's perception and emotional response. By portraying these self-employed individuals\, often operating within informal economies\, Galbreath draws attention to the unique challenges they face. These individuals frequently contend with low\, inconsistent incomes\, long hours\, and sometimes exploitative conditions\, fostering a sense of solidarity with those who labor under such circumstances.\n\nFurthermore\, the series invites viewers to confront the broader societal structures that contribute to these inequities. Galbreath's work serves not only as a tribute but also as a call to action to consider how our consumer habits and economic policies affect the livelihoods of others. The layered narratives present in this series open a dialogue about the value we place on labor and the often unseen struggles that support our day-to-day lives. DESCRIPTION:View a diverse array of artifacts which were created to communicate with and call upon various unseen\, supernatural forces for aid and protection. While the objects on display are disparate at first glance\, ranging from lead tablets and amulets to papyrus and parchment leaves\, they all share a common thread: they have long been labeled as \"magical\" in traditional Western scholarship.\n\nHowever\, each of these artifacts is better understood on a broad spectrum of ancient ritual\, from subversive and transgressive acts to highly social and visible ones. The exhibit highlights the objects’ oft-overlooked material dimensions\, asking us to consider how qualities like color\, texture\, and weight shaped an object’s perceived efficacy and meaning. \n\nThis exhibit was a collaboration\, and displays items from several University of Michigan units: the library’s Special Collections Research Center and Papyrology Collection\, the Museum of Natural History\, and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. In her practice\, Lavoie creates large-scale\, textile representations of natural environments in contrast and connection with the actual environs surrounding them. Lavoie holds an MFA in painting from California State University Long Beach and a BFA in illustration from Massachusetts College of Art. Each brushstroke conveys a commitment not only to visual accuracy but also to emotional resonance\, as he strives to encapsulate the spirit of a place that is both loved and contested.\n\nIn addition to these works\, the artist constantly sketches ideas both for paintings and for designing projects in his business. These sketches serve as visual language\, helping him clarify and refine his concepts before bringing them to life. They become a means to communicate ideas to clients and his crew and become an extension of his voice—an academic exercise rooted in artistic practice that fosters collaboration and innovation. The act of sketching also reflects his evolving relationship with the city\, as each drawing encapsulates fleeting moments of inspiration drawn directly from his surroundings. This duality of function—creating art for exhibition and conceptualizing designs for projects—demonstrates Swafford’s versatility and adaptability as an artist.\n\nSwafford received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design\, and while at RISD\, he was part of the European Honors Program. His education not only honed his technical skills but also broadened his artistic perspective through exposure to varied artistic traditions. He has shown his work in both solo and group exhibitions in Chicago\, Kansas City\, and New York State. DESCRIPTION:A Rackham Interdisciplinary Workshop focused on the nexus of exhibition\, collection\, curation\, display\, and representation within museums and museum-adjacent spaces. The group’s name\, rummage\, evokes both a materiality and an intellectual practice characteristic of museum studies more broadly. On the one hand\, rummaging has a tactile quality. It gestures to the human role in how objects are placed and misplaced\, organized and disorganized\, thrown into juxtaposition\, and often randomly re-discovered anew by individuals negotiating various value systems associated with objects. It evokes an image of coming to objects of the past with new eyes and curiosity. On the other hand\, rummaging could also be used to describe an intellectual approach. In posing questions about the how and why certain narratives come to be exhibited and interpreted\, we root around historical understandings of heritage and the power dynamics that lead certain narratives to become dominant. This process is guided by curiosity\, a drive to understand\, and a skepticism of ordering systems. Founded in Fall 2023\, this RIW takes the attics\, closets\, and cabinets of exhibition history as a starting point to engage questions relating to those spaces aligned with — or challenging — the International Council of Museums’ broad definition of a museum as an institution “in the service of society that researches\, collects\, conserves\, interprets and exhibits tangible and intangible heritage”.

DESCRIPTION:In 1533\, the first Spanish contingent to enter the Inka city of Cuzco was both repelled and astonished by the reverence that the ruling elite showed toward their deceased rulers. As young soldier Pedro Pizarro later remarked: “The greater part of the people\, treasure\, expenses\, and vices were under the control of the dead” whose human remains were allegedly preserved for ritual purposes. Housed within their own residences\, these relics would have been constantly attended by members of their respective corporate groups (ayllus)\, paraded daily in Cuzco’s ceremonial plaza\, lavishly fed\, and even consulted on matters of governance. However\, a reexamination of early colonial documents complicates this long-standing understanding of Inka mortuary practices. These sources suggest a limited concern for the preservation of corpses and challenge the assumption that the ruling elite was composed of lineages. This paper proposes to integrate these materials into a new analysis of ancestor veneration in the pre-Hispanic Andes. It argues that membership in Inka socio-political units was defined primarily by co-residence and the fulfillment of ritual duties. These “houses” constituted entities anchored in space and materiality rather than in the genealogy of individuals. Such a perspective opens up stimulating avenues of discussion between anthropology and archaeology.

DESCRIPTION:In recognition of the anniversary of the 1915 Armenian Genocide\, the Center for Armenian Studies at the University of Michigan\, in partnership with the Armenian Students Cultural Association and the Multidisciplinary Workshop for Armenian Studies\, invites the community to the fourth annual Shared Memories: The Armenian Experience Through Objects and Stories.\n   \n   This gathering centers on the power of objects as vessels of memory\, survival\, and identity. Across generations and geographies\, Armenians have preserved history not only through archives and texts\, but through everyday items carried\, saved\, and passed down. Photographs\, letters\, jewelry\, textiles\, books\, religious objects\, and household items often bear stories of loss\, resilience\, migration\, and continuity that written records alone cannot capture.\n   \n   Community members are invited to bring an object and\, if they wish\, share the story connected to it. These stories may speak to the Armenian Genocide\, life in the Ottoman Empire\, displacement and refuge\, the Michigan Armenian experience\, or the broader American Armenian story. Sharing is informal and conversational\, creating space for reflection\, dialogue\, and intergenerational connection.\n   \n   No prior expertise is required\, and participation is flexible. SUMMARY:Exhibition:'Redefining the Crown' Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:\"Artist’s statement: For centuries\, hair has been critical to how human beings understand racial categories\, gender designations\, and class status. For Black women in particular\, hair has and continues to be tied to ethnic identity and a history of self-determination\, social justice\, and survival. Thus\, chemotherapy-induced hair loss is a devastating event for Black patients who are also more likely to be diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer subtypes necessitating chemotherapy\, carrying a 40% increased risk of dying from breast cancer.\n\nRedefining the ‘crown’: Approaching chemotherapy-induced alopecia among Black patients with breast cancer” started as a manuscript published in the scientific journal Cancer. But the work could not stop there. “Redefining the Crown” then metamorphosed into a photo essay project aimed at exploring the breast cancer journeys of six Black women and their experiences with hair loss due to chemotherapy. Though the project centers the experience of Black women\, we also acknowledge that breast cancer and chemotherapy-induced alopecia impact individuals of all genders. While the goal is to illuminate the unique stories of Black women who are affected uncommonly by this common disease\, the project is also a call to action regarding the disproportionate breast cancer-related mortality facing Black communities.\n\nIn this portraiture series\, photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks. This exhibition examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy and how their sense of cultural pride and personal identity have been redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThese survivors have redefined their own crowns. More profound than the new hairstyles they don after hair loss are the invisible crowns that they choose to wear each day: gratitude\, faith\, and resilience. What do their words mean to you? From naturalization classes to festivals of nations\, from breaking new ground for churches to mundane tableaus of Thanksgiving and Christmas\, this range of photographs offers a glimpse of a community in the making\, one that sought to preserve a memory of its Ottoman past even while anticipating an American future.

DESCRIPTION:View a diverse array of artifacts which were created to communicate with and call upon various unseen\, supernatural forces for aid and protection. While the objects on display are disparate at first glance\, ranging from lead tablets and amulets to papyrus and parchment leaves\, they all share a common thread: they have long been labeled as \"magical\" in traditional Western scholarship.\n\nHowever\, each of these artifacts is better understood on a broad spectrum of ancient ritual\, from subversive and transgressive acts to highly social and visible ones. The exhibit highlights the objects’ oft-overlooked material dimensions\, asking us to consider how qualities like color\, texture\, and weight shaped an object’s perceived efficacy and meaning. \n\nThis exhibit was a collaboration\, and displays items from several University of Michigan units: the library’s Special Collections Research Center and Papyrology Collection\, the Museum of Natural History\, and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. DESCRIPTION:As the Medical School celebrates the anniversary of its opening in the fall of 1850\, and Michigan Medicine marks the 100th anniversary of the opening of the \"Old Main\" University Hospital that served as its flagship from 1925 to 1986\, a free museum exhibit explores 175 years of medical education\, research and clinical care. \n\nOpen to the public at the Museum on Main Street operated by the Washtenaw County Historical Society\, the exhibit includes artifacts\, photos and facts about how U-M's medical community grew from humble beginnings on the Diag to become one of the nation's largest and most respected academic medical centers. It also asks visitors to ponder their own attitudes and experiences\, and to submit memories and photos of their time working\, studying\, volunteering or receiving care at U-M's medical campus and beyond. A prizewinner of several international competitions\, including the Musica Sacra\, Strauss\, Rheinsberg\, and Darclée Competitions\, she served as a principal soloist at Theater Münster and has appeared in leading roles at major German opera houses\, including Essen\, Freiburg\, and Wiesbaden. Her operatic repertoire includes roles such as Blonde (*Die Entführung aus dem Serail*) and Musetta (*La Bohème*).\n \nAs a concert artist\, she has performed at the Berlin Philharmonie and in major venues across Europe\, collaborating with distinguished conductors such as Wolfgang Sawallisch and Christian Thielemann. The same year\, he organized and performed “K-ArtSong: a Korean Art Song Recital\,” excerpts of which went viral in Korean news media accumulating more than 10 million views. DESCRIPTION:Amy Chavasse (faculty\, Dance)\, Malcolm Tulip (faculty\, Theatre & Drama)\, and Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance major\, Anna Bodescu join together for an evening of storytelling\, movement\, and dance. Careening from acts boisterous and absurd to tributes reverent and tender\, the three works promise an unflinching examination of the human condition.\n\nPROGRAM\n\n*Little Charlotte the Round Ray* (premiered at the Disguise Festival\, Northampton\, MA\, May 2025)\n\nA cautionary tale\, told as speculative fiction in kaleidoscopic movement\, song and storytelling. It examines the desperation that can emerge from belief systems that elevate hysteria\, and wishful thinking. At its core\, this is a heartfelt homage to Charlotte.\n\n*Low Light* (premiered at the Beijing Dance Festival\, 2014)\n\nIn 1956\, Rachel Carson wrote a script for the popular TV show *Omnibus* called *Something About the Sky*. She hoped to challenge the \"sterile preoccupation with things artificial\" and question our \"alienation from our source of strength.” Our absolute and essential humanness calls out for a re-imagined vocabulary of encounters. This dance seeks to uncover how this looks and feels across an expanse of emotional latitude – the imaginary line that connects points across the surface of the earth. Geographical imagery provides a framework as the dancer moves inside a quivering\, episodic narrative.\n\n*deux dogtooth* (premiered at the Arthur Miller Theatre\, 2017)\n\nA duet for Tulip and Chavasse that uses misappropriation and agitprop in a tightly structured improvisation that relies on intricately timed textural layering\, gestures and humor. Obliquely referencing the 2009 film\, *Dogtooth* by Yorgos Lanthimos\, the action unfolds on and around a table\, two chairs and a thick shag rug.

Hailing from Ann Arbor\, MI\, Pajamas' style has been described as “exploratory rock\" - a good descriptor for Pajamas’ sound which contains a smorgasbord of influences from across almost the whole canon of American music tradition. This four man group is redefining the live music experience\, standing on the shoulders of giants and crafting performances that are as much about the journey as the destination. \n\nThe band’s rocky overall sound is nuanced\, feeling almost like each song is an interesting\, in-depth conversation between the band and audience. The band's four members - Nicholas Orr\, Graham Low\, Owen Kellenberger\, and Liam Gallegos - weave together a tapestry of sound that is both intricate and expansive. Songs blend seamlessly into one another\, creating a sense of flow and continuity that is all too rare in modern music.\n\nPajamas draws influence from the likes of Pink Floyd\, Phish\, Chick Corea\, Grateful Dead\, Jaco Pastorius\, David Bowie\, Brian Blade\, Radiohead\, Victor Wooten\, Allman Brothers and many others. DESCRIPTION:\"Artist’s statement: For centuries\, hair has been critical to how human beings understand racial categories\, gender designations\, and class status. For Black women in particular\, hair has and continues to be tied to ethnic identity and a history of self-determination\, social justice\, and survival. Thus\, chemotherapy-induced hair loss is a devastating event for Black patients who are also more likely to be diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer subtypes necessitating chemotherapy\, carrying a 40% increased risk of dying from breast cancer.\n\nRedefining the ‘crown’: Approaching chemotherapy-induced alopecia among Black patients with breast cancer” started as a manuscript published in the scientific journal Cancer. But the work could not stop there. “Redefining the Crown” then metamorphosed into a photo essay project aimed at exploring the breast cancer journeys of six Black women and their experiences with hair loss due to chemotherapy. Though the project centers the experience of Black women\, we also acknowledge that breast cancer and chemotherapy-induced alopecia impact individuals of all genders. While the goal is to illuminate the unique stories of Black women who are affected uncommonly by this common disease\, the project is also a call to action regarding the disproportionate breast cancer-related mortality facing Black communities.\n\nIn this portraiture series\, photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks. This exhibition examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy and how their sense of cultural pride and personal identity have been redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThese survivors have redefined their own crowns. DESCRIPTION:View a diverse array of artifacts which were created to communicate with and call upon various unseen\, supernatural forces for aid and protection. While the objects on display are disparate at first glance\, ranging from lead tablets and amulets to papyrus and parchment leaves\, they all share a common thread: they have long been labeled as \"magical\" in traditional Western scholarship.\n\nHowever\, each of these artifacts is better understood on a broad spectrum of ancient ritual\, from subversive and transgressive acts to highly social and visible ones. The exhibit highlights the objects’ oft-overlooked material dimensions\, asking us to consider how qualities like color\, texture\, and weight shaped an object’s perceived efficacy and meaning. \n\nThis exhibit was a collaboration\, and displays items from several University of Michigan units: the library’s Special Collections Research Center and Papyrology Collection\, the Museum of Natural History\, and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. At its core\, this is a heartfelt homage to Charlotte.\n\n*Low Light* (premiered at the Beijing Dance Festival\, 2014)\n\nIn 1956\, Rachel Carson wrote a script for the popular TV show *Omnibus* called *Something About the Sky*. She hoped to challenge the \"sterile preoccupation with things artificial\" and question our \"alienation from our source of strength.” Our absolute and essential humanness calls out for a re-imagined vocabulary of encounters. This dance seeks to uncover how this looks and feels across an expanse of emotional latitude – the imaginary line that connects points across the surface of the earth. Geographical imagery provides a framework as the dancer moves inside a quivering\, episodic narrative.\n\n*deux dogtooth* (premiered at the Arthur Miller Theatre\, 2017)\n\nA duet for Tulip and Chavasse that uses misappropriation and agitprop in a tightly structured improvisation that relies on intricately timed textural layering\, gestures and humor. Obliquely referencing the 2009 film\, *Dogtooth* by Yorgos Lanthimos\, the action unfolds on and around a table\, two chairs and a thick shag rug.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:'Redefining the Crown' Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:\"Artist’s statement: For centuries\, hair has been critical to how human beings understand racial categories\, gender designations\, and class status. For Black women in particular\, hair has and continues to be tied to ethnic identity and a history of self-determination\, social justice\, and survival. Thus\, chemotherapy-induced hair loss is a devastating event for Black patients who are also more likely to be diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer subtypes necessitating chemotherapy\, carrying a 40% increased risk of dying from breast cancer.\n\nRedefining the ‘crown’: Approaching chemotherapy-induced alopecia among Black patients with breast cancer” started as a manuscript published in the scientific journal Cancer. But the work could not stop there. “Redefining the Crown” then metamorphosed into a photo essay project aimed at exploring the breast cancer journeys of six Black women and their experiences with hair loss due to chemotherapy. Though the project centers the experience of Black women\, we also acknowledge that breast cancer and chemotherapy-induced alopecia impact individuals of all genders. While the goal is to illuminate the unique stories of Black women who are affected uncommonly by this common disease\, the project is also a call to action regarding the disproportionate breast cancer-related mortality facing Black communities.\n\nIn this portraiture series\, photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks. This exhibition examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy and how their sense of cultural pride and personal identity have been redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThese survivors have redefined their own crowns. More profound than the new hairstyles they don after hair loss are the invisible crowns that they choose to wear each day: gratitude\, faith\, and resilience. What do their words mean to you? DESCRIPTION:Making Armenian Americans  \nCurators: Michael Pifer (U-M| MES) and Kathryn Babayan (U-M|History)\nProject Save Photograph Archive/Archive Alive Project\n\nMaking Armenian Americans invites viewers into a moment of possibility in the early 20th century\, when Armenians fleeing violence at the end of the Ottoman Empire came to reinvent themselves in the promise of America. Drawn from the archives of Project Save\, these photographs capture different valences of American life\, as experienced\, performed\, and imagined by Armenian immigrants. From naturalization classes to festivals of nations\, from breaking new ground for churches to mundane tableaus of Thanksgiving and Christmas\, this range of photographs offers a glimpse of a community in the making\, one that sought to preserve a memory of its Ottoman past even while anticipating an American future.

DESCRIPTION:A special display at the Gerald Ford Presidential Library will feature the Northwest Ordinance of 1787\, on loan from the NARA\, and on display in Michigan for the first time. Drafted by the Confederation Congress at the same time as the Constitution\, the Ordinance outlined a framework for government in the northwest territory\, defined the rights guaranteed in that territory\, and created a process for admitting new states to the United States. The display offers a rare opportunity to view a document that helped shape the ideals and values of the young nation.
